Yahoo to Reject Microsoft’s $44.6 Billion Offer

Yahoo's board of directors plans to reject Microsoft's acquisition offer, according to the Wall Street Journal. The board believes that the current offer "massively undervalues" the company. Quoting sources "familiar with the situation", the WSJ said that board would not be accepting an offer below 40 USD per share, which would bring the purchase price closer to 57 billion USD, and would require Microsoft to account for certain risks, if regulators do not approve the deal. Yahoo's stock closed Friday trading at 29.20 USD. If accurate, the board apparently is generally willing to agree to the sale of the company. The two companies are likely to be heading into a gambling phase to find out if they can agree on a price. It is unclear at this time whether Microsoft is willing to increase its offer to the level of Yahoo's expectations. When Microsoft announced its intention to take over Yahoo, CEO Steve Ballmer said that Microsoft had been in "on and off" acquisition talks with Yahoo for about 18 months. He said that he "thought long and hard about" purchasing Yahoo and believes in a Yahoo that is integrated into Microsoft "more than ever." He considered the 44.6 billion USD as an offer that Yahoo should "seriously think about".

Your guess is as good as ours on whether Microsoft will increase its offer to 57 billion USD, but it is clear that Microsoft that there are very few companies out there that can help Microsoft to decrease the distance to Google in online search and advertising. Yahoo obviously has leverage in these negotiations.

Nooooo, keep your dirty hands off Micro$oft! I want to keep my yahoo mail the way it is. Fix your drivers first and then think about buying something. (tried to download 64bit intellipoint mouse drivers, neither 6.1 or 6.2 download links work from windows hardware or windows download pages).

when a rich man knocks on your door and asks to buy your house, you can't be blamed for asking for a little more :)

Stupid move by Microsoft if you ask me. Google is the top dog and nothing will stop it. Microsoft should just worry about it's OS's and other related programs. They've failed at other search engines before so it won't make a hill of beans anyway if they team up with Yahoo. :nutkick:

Yahoo was the first on the scene, and longest surviving of the major search and web information. But yeah, in the last few years it has turned kinda emo/teenie crap.

But the tools are still good, and easy to use. Auto, home, shopping, etc.... Mail is good.

from what I remember, WebCrawler was the first true search engine.

nowadays, webcrawler is a metasearch

Yahoo seems to be the more mainstream search engine I guess. But majority I'm sure is Google without a doubt.

What does Yahoo have besides a user base that makes it so valuable in the first place? Do they even do anything google or MSN doesnt do.

I use Yahoo as my email account and I must say I love Yahoo but I think that it would be in the better interests of Yaho to accept the deal. I dont think that their stocks are going to keep rising should they decline the offer. In fact their stocks may eventually end up even worse off than before and hence then leading to an even worse deal offered by Microsoft. I say to yahoo take the deal and run with it, your not going to get a much better offer than what Microsoft already offered you if even a better offer at all.
Everyones email accounts for Yahoo would receive a smooth transition. I cant forsee any problems with that right there.

If I'm not mistaken, AltaVista was around before either Yahoo or WebCrawler.

And now Altavista is a cracks search engine now, or it was a couple years ago. I have a yahoo email account, just for fantasy football. However, their spam filter sucks. No matter what I put in as spam, the same shit goes right back to my inbox. Really ticks me off. I do have to admit, yahoo maps(until we got our tom tom <3 Tom Tom) is useful, their auctions are at times and a few other things. Honestly, this is a huge buy for MS and that many billions is a phenomenal offer. I cant believe they can withstand to offer so much. If I were Yahoo, Id take it. Shit, $50 billion dollars will set your entire family line for a lifetime, or close to it.

What do you mean by its a "cracks" search engine?

I do belive that Yahoo is publicly traded on the market, so the 50B would be split amongst all the shareholders.

Even so, if I were Yahoo I would take the money and then start another company :D

Okay, that's what I thought he meant but I wasn't sure how AltaVista differed from any other search engine in that matter.

Why go to AltaVista for cracks when any search engine will spit out what you are looking for?

I used altavista back in the day, but when Yahoo first hit the scene many years ago, with mail, and interesting news, etc....

It was one of the first on the scene 1994 with more than just search.

Google was 1998.
MSN 1995
AltaVisa 1995

CompuServe, AOL, Prodigy, and a few other smaller options were included by default in Windows 95 for ISP's Most had their own search engines.

look at it this way - once Micgoogahoo is behind the reins of the software empire; you'll only have to make a payment to one company instead of a ton of individual companies . . .

. . . granted, you'll have to take out a second mortgage, sell your kids, donate a kidney, outsource the methlab, smuggle some aliens . . . but you'll at least have only one payment.
