World smallest power supply - picoPSU

This must be the perfect solution for all the people out there, using those ITX boards from VIA, completely fanless and small. Plug in this 120W power supply, just as big as a couple of AA batteries:

No fan, no cables, no mess. All that for $49.95 right here. They even have a 200W part which is just a bit larger.

this is not a real psu .. it's a DC-DC converter .. you have to feed it 12V input

which means you still need an external power brick, just like with notebooks...

*g* I fell for the hype...it says "power supply" everywere...even the name picoPSU

*sigh*

but still a nice piece, as a power brick is fanless as well, and can be tucked away nicely.

good night

You'd need a hellova 12v power supply! Most laptop adapters supply 3-6amps... youd need 16amps as a minimum for the 200w version, and that's litterally the minimum. You'd need some headroom for peak currents, so you'd need 20 friggin amps worth of 12v power supply!!!

With those kinda currents, i'd be very nervous about pulling the full 16 amps through that light weight 12v input wire... There's no way it'd hold up in my opinion.

However, i do think this would be extemely useful if you traveled a lot, for example boats, caravans etc, where you would have no access to mains power. Because you would then be able to run your computer of the 12v leasure battery! To make it last for any amount of time though, you'd need a fairly hefty battery of 120ah+, and thats forgetting about the monitor. You'd need a small inverter to power the monitor.

Anyway, food for thought!
