Intel Plans New Stepping for its 2.66GHz Core i7 920 Processor

Intel has announced plans to supply its partners and distributors with a new batch of Core i7 920 processors, that have their stepping updated from the current C-0 to D-0. Ready to ship on March 2nd, the new stepping will feature:
  • New S-spec (from SLBCH to SLBEJ) and Material Master numbers for the converting products.
  • CPUID will change from 0x000106A4 to 0x000106A5.
  • The electrical, mechanical and thermal specifications remain within the current specifications. Intel anticipates no changes to customer platforms designed to previous Intel guidelines.
  • Readable serial number will be removed from the package ink swatch to fully mitigate the potential risk of the IHS cosmetically overlapping a marked serial number. There is no change to the ULT matrix content which continues to contain the serial number.
A motherboard BIOS update will be required to identify the new stepping CPUs correctly.

FordGT90ConceptThe prices aren't likely to go anywhere until the 32nm parts are out. They are a league of their own. :(
Nah! I'm sure AMD will have something to ground i7 into dust in an undetermined amount of time. Wait for that! Unless you've got something against AMD.. in which case I should remind you that this website is founded by AMD-fanboys.

FordGT90ConceptHmm, would it be worth waiting a month to get this newer chip though?
Rest assured... wait for a few voltage and current stepping tweaks. It's been the history of Intel chips.

I get a bowing emoticon and yet no thank..

I'm not asking for one, I just want to analyze this interesting phenomenon, possibly brought on disinterest of lack of remembrance.

Thank you Weer. I love AMD, though I use Intel. I need some good ol' punishment. That said this has nothing to do with AMD really...

Yes, and I would discipline you long and hard, if you hadn't given me that thank.

I mean I was asking for it. And you're right, for being an AMD fanboy, along with the rest of them, lurking around corners, here on TPU, you should be punished pretty severely. And what better way than to make light-hearted fun of you. :)

Ya, i learnt my lesson with PC parts. Its a good idea to wait a few months before buying new tech. Theres always a few bugs in new hardware.

Just buy a wifi adapter, and have wifi on any computer you decide to buy. Quite frankly, not having built in wifi is a pretty silly reason not to buy a board.

my P5W DH Dlx and P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n both have wifi. why buy something new if that doesn't have something that older boards had.

Wow intel still does the unique number in each CPU nonsense? Doesn't everybody turn that off in BIOS? Oh well I guess it helps track thieves.

Well what he meant was that, wifi isnt that expensive to buy as a loose device, that way you dont need to choose motherboard just of the reason that it has wifi or not. I must agree with him that its a silly reason to choose motherboards over, there are much more important reasons to choose youre mobo for. And with a wifi adapter, you dont need that have that choise in mind.
