NVIDIA Releases GeForce 185.68 BETA Drivers

Less than a week since they released the 185.66 BETA drivers (which in themselves superceeded the 182.50 WHQL and 185.65 BETA drivers in the space of 24 hours), NVIDIA has released yet another GeForce BETA Driver of version number 185.68. From these latest BETA releases, it seems NVIDIA has dropped support for the 8-Series graphics cards which as of now are only supported using the 182.50 WHQL driver. With the recent release of so many driver revisions from NVIDIA, it could be their answer to what EVGA were trying to do with their SLI Enhancement Patches, to keep up to date with the latest releases. This driver supports GeForce 9-series, 100-series, and 200-series desktop GPUs, the only documented change in this version over the 185.66 BETA drivers is:
  • Optimized performance for the PC game The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

Please dont forget that the Latest WHQL support the 8 series. It could be that NVIDIA better spend their time improving the latest cards and getting the driver working well, then add 8 series support back in for the WHQL.

It's gonna be the same driver for GT100 and upto GTS250 cards and the 9XXX ones so what difference does keeping support for the 8XXX cards make?

PVTCaboose1337This is so sad that they only have support for 100 and 200 series now... what a mistake. The 8 series is still quite new...
Guys it's a BETA and a very early one. A moded 185.68 is allready being uploaded a Guru3D. They are not dropping support for 8 series cards, they will be in the next WHQL so stop crying.

It has happened in the past. When the 8 series first came out, all the beta drivers for them completely lacked support for the 7 series and below. Support was added back in later, and of course modded inf's added support back into the drivers that didn't officially support them either. This is not an official drop of support.

The 8600GT/S packed a pretty good punch for the time and price.

Nah I had the 8600GT for a year and a half til just a few weeks back and I think it was a turd of a card. Wish I would have saved up for an 8800, I'd still be using it.

By todays standards, it is a rather weak card. However, when they came out more than 6 months before the 8800GT, they were very good cards. And they were very nicely priced compared to the G80 based alternatives at the time.

Haha drop support for 8x thats kinda funny to see a company choke on itself.
IMHO they made too much in the GFX market in a pretty short period of time.

I dont really get the point of buying a new GFX if youre on 8800gts 512 or similar.
Everything works more than fine on 1440x900 for me in current multiplayer games.

An 8800GTS would choke at 1920x1080. At lower resolutions of course it's still good but for high res gamers such as my self a GTX 260 or HD 4850 is a must.

2½ years isnt "quite new" when talking about gfx market. And they havent dropped support for 8 serie, just go with whql which work just fine.

Yeah I never actually got that part where ppl buy a >21inch screen and then play a game sitting 2 meters away from it to be able to grasp the whole action without running around the screen with your head and eyes.

A little offtopic.

My screen is 21.5" :p I got it because 1920x1080 at that screen size looks AMAZING. Especially with 8x AA and everything on maximum :rockout::rockout:

Do you play those games or just run them so you can see how nicely they look like in a high res ? :)

i got this error while installing

although the installation completed .... then i go to test the " crysis WH 22% increase in performance" and i got 0 FPS increase in performance.

those are results of crysis WH benchmark:

182.08 driver

185.68 driver

so i just decided to go back to 182.46 which installed without any error.

Yea as was said, G80 is 2.5yrs gonig on 3 yrs old. Still good cards, and the 8600GT(S) weren't bad since they were mainstream at release and matched the performance of previous highend cards, well once they were overclocked. Everyone jus thought they sucked cause 8800GTS/GTX/Ultra just blew people away performance wise, where as the 8600GT/S performance had already been seen on X1950PRO/XT(X) and 7950GT. They'll add support for 8 series back in for sure. I am still waiting for my question to be answered. Do these drivers benefit my 7 series any?

BTA? alex posted this one....
and they worked for me.

Also I got an error saying it had to close windows installer for some reason. It still said it completed successfully, and games run fine. I got a 500% increase in my COH FPS though. ( for some reason COH always ran like 400 fps on other peoples 9800GX2, but never mine until now)

I said in the second post that the Vista X64 ink seems to be broken, but I gave the international one.

I am just using the links which NVIDIA give :)
