AMD to Slash Prices of Radeon HD 4800 Series Products in Q3

AMD is expected to introduce a series of price-cuts next month, for its ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics products. The price-cuts may amount to as much as US $50, perhaps taking advantage of the low manufacturing costs. The cuts also come ahead of the time-frame in which the company will introduce a DirectX 11 compatible future-generation of ATI Radeon, to sync with the commercial launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system.

When implemented, the price of the high-end Radeon HD 4890 is expected to be $199, down $50 from its current price of $249. Radeon HD 4870 will sell for $149 from its current listing price of $199, although there needs to be some clarity on how the 1 GB and 512 MB variants are positioned. Finally, the Radeon HD 4850 will enter the $100 realm, to substitute the Radeon HD 4770, which seems to be suffering an acute stock shortage.

Ima shoot somebody. The HIS HD 4870 that I paid $200 just arrived at my doorstep. Oh well, I guess now it'll take some of the pain from my wallet when it's time to go Crossfire.

Yes! I'd probably go for a HD 4870 or even the HD 4890 when I get the moolah. :D

I might add a second 4870. Crossfire seems to scale well.

Nice. I've already seen 4850s for $100. Also, there have been a lot of cheap 4780s around $130-150 AR as well.
I'll pick up a second 4870 1GB for some crossfire action I think. I don't think I'll need to jump straight to DX11 real quick anyway. Hell, none of the games I play now are even DX10

This is verry interesting. I may try crossfire, at last. I now have a 4870 1gig. I have looked around to find a review of a CFX setup with a 4890 and cannot find any. I wounder how it would perform....

Not all versions of DX are popular. While DX10 went largely ignored, it could be possible that everyone will jump on the DX11 bandwagon.

Lets see if these cuts make it across the pond. If so, 4870's in crossfire look quite tasty . . .

I find it hilarious the smallest and cheapest chip (which is supposed to lead to high yields, right?) is suffering a stock shortage. Or are they just being bought as quick as they can fly off the shelves?

They are being purchased like they will go out of fashion due to the new die + they can overclock to similar speeds as the 4850 for much cheaper.

You can't make 50 dollars in 3-6 months?

it's a little bit of that, but on the brighter side of things, there are also people who have been saving up for a new card but hadn't decided, and this might help them make their decision.
