The Radeon R9 M290X was a mobile graphics chip by AMD, launched on January 9th, 2014. Built on the 28 nm process, and based on the Neptune graphics processor, in its Neptune XT variant, the chip supports DirectX 12. Even though it supports DirectX 12, the feature level is only 11_1, which can be problematic with newer DirectX 12 titles. The Neptune graphics processor is an average sized chip with a die area of 212 mm² and 2,800 million transistors. It features 1280 shading units, 80 texture mapping units, and 32 ROPs. AMD has paired 4 GB GDDR5 memory with the Radeon R9 M290X, which are connected using a 256-bit memory interface. The GPU is operating at a frequency of 850 MHz, which can be boosted up to 900 MHz, memory is running at 1200 MHz (4.8 Gbps effective).
Being a mxm module card, the AMD Radeon R9 M290X does not require any additional power connector, its power draw is rated at 100 W maximum. This device has no display connectivity, as it is not designed to have monitors connected to it. Rather it is intended for use in laptop/notebooks and will use the output of the host mobile device. Radeon R9 M290X is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 interface.
