Although all the rumour, AMD plans to release the Radeon X1950GT graphics card. However, AMD recently added a restriction to the release, saying that certain partners within certain area would only be supplied to sell the cards, whatever that means? The new X1950GT(RV570LE) model, has a very similar specifications to the PRO edition. The lowered core speed from 575MHz to 500MHz and memory speed from 1.38GHz do 1.2GHz DDR are the main differences from the PRO version. In addition, the "Video In" support in Rage Theater has been removed. Early samples are already manufactured, but the final version of the cards is scheduled for early February 2007.

Both Newegg and ZipZoomFly are now selling AMD's latest offering in the CPU market: the AMD Quad FX. At the moment you need to buy the ASUS L1N64-SLI WS if you want to use of one these processors because they will require Socket-F, but this won't be cheap. The Quad FX itself will set you back a minimum of about $129 and the motherboard will cost at least $379.99 at current prices. Whilst Newegg is selling all of the Quad FX speeds, ZipZoomFly only has the FX-70 at present.

AMD will soon be ready to ship another series of single-core 65nm Athlon 64 processors, according to HKEPC. The new models help in lowering the cost as well as the power consumption from 62W to 45W (27.4%). The two desktop processors to be launched in Mid-Jan, codenamed Lime, include Athlon 64 3500+ and Athlon 64 3800+. Basically, the 65nm models are the same as the 90nm edition. They are clocked at 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz respectively, and have 512KB of L2 cache. In addition 10 more 65nm models will be released in Q2 2007. The upcoming models include three new dual-core Athlon 64 X2 35W TDP processors codenamed Brisbane and one single core Athlon 64 4000+(2.6GHz 45W TDP). AMD has a basic driver for it's R600 ready for action, though they definitely want to polish some things before releasing it. AMD knows that CrossFire and OpenGL performance are huge problems in Windows Vista, so AMD is working hard on tweaking these things. The R600 is confirmed to use an 80nm process, have a 512-bit memory controller, unified shader architecture, DX10 support, and enough performance to "make G80 run for its money." The launch is expected to take place in early February, though the launch date has been moved several times.

Newly created site Level 505 has leaked benchmarks and specifications of AMD's upcoming ATI R600 graphics processor expected in January 2007. Some of ATI's R600 preliminary specifications are: 64 4-Way SIMD Unified Shaders, 128 Shader Operations/Cycle, 512 bit Memory Controller, full 32 bit per chip connection, GDDR3 at 900 MHz clock speed (January)- total bandwidth 115 GB/s, GDDR4 at 1.1 GHz clock speed (March, revised edition)- total bandwidth 140 GB/s, consumer memory support 1024 MB, DX10 full compatibility with draft DX10.1 vendor-specific cap removal (unified programming), 230W TDP PCI-SIG compliant, CrossFire support. AMD will begin offering AMD Live! computers with Blu-ray and HD DVD drives in Q3 2007. This should definitely increase AMD's market share in multimedia PC's. While both AMD and Intel are working hard on making a nice multimedia platform, AMD with AMD Live! and Intel with Intel Viiv, neither of them have very much market share. This is probably due to a lack of enthusiasm from any major computer vendor. AMD's support for HD DVD and Blu-ray should help the Blu-ray drive gain popularity.

ATI Vice President and Managing Director of Europe, Middle East and Africa, Pete Edinger, has left the company after 11 years of service. He wishes the firm all the best and feels that the merger between AMD and ATI makes sense, saying "the new AMD will enable a lot of opportunities for our industry to drive the market". Edinger was respected by the press because he was nearly always available for a chat and he is likely to stay in IT. Alberto Macchi, president of AMD Europe, will take over his position.

AMD has announced its plan to let different manufactures to design and manufacture its special Radeon X1950XT edition. It is expected these special edition may eventually has a lower cost than the official edition. Some of these special editions have already been sent to AMD for verification and hopefully they will be available in the market in Mid-January. VR-Zone also tells us to expect X1950XT and even X1950PRO prices to drop. Also AMD has cancelled plans for X1950GT video cards based on RV570LE, since it is no longer viable in the current price structure.

AMD today announced the formation of a new Advanced Architecture and Technology Lab led by Rich Witek, AMD corporate fellow and chief architectural officer. The new lab will focus on technology and platform development beyond the five-year time horizon, further extending AMD's strong tradition of advanced silicon planning.

Amkor Technology, Inc. today announced that AMD has entered into an agreement to license Amkor's lead free (Pb-free) electroplated wafer bumping technology. Terms of the license agreement were not disclosed. The electronics industry is striving to reduce or eliminate certain elements and compounds, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and halogen, in favor of "Green" products in response to legislation in Europe and Japan, overall environmental concerns and market pressures. This drive to adopt "Green" products is especially strong in the consumer electronics market.

AMD plans to cut all the Radeon X1300 series, re-nominating RV516/RV505 to Radeon X1550, and overclocking them. Since the core is fabricated with 80nm process by TSMC, AMD confirmed that the core can be overclocked to 600MHz without changing the core voltage. Manufacturers are also approved to sell special overclocked Radeon X1550 version, which may be running at 700MHz with additional voltage and improved heat-sink. ATI Radeon X1550 256MB has the same price as Radeon X1300 - $65; while the special over-clocked edition costs $69. Its rival would be NVIDIA's GeForce 7300GS 256MB. Radeon X1550 has a 25% lead to GeForce 7300GS, and the boost is even higher for the special edition at 45%.

This year, Intel boasted at IDF about being the only company shipping 65nm chips. This is about to change.

The Inquirer reports that system integrators already have their hands on AMD's 65nm X2 CPUs. They have been shipping for 2 weeks already. The CPUs will be available to the public early 2007, yet they will be nothing more than a re-designed 90nm part.

If you're lucky, you could find one of these in an assembled HP or Dell AMD machine this year.

AMD has quietly updated its proccesor line up by adding the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ and a 5400+ CPUs. Both models work at 2.8GHz but the Athlon 64 X2 5400+ has 2x512KB L2 cache, while the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ has 1MB per core for a total of 2MB L2 cache. The 5400+ is priced at $485 per 1,000 units, and the 5600+ is priced at $505 per 1,000 units.

At the International Electron Device Meeting (IEDM) today, IBM and AMD presented papers describing the use of immersion lithography, ultra-low-K interconnect dielectrics, and multiple enhanced transistor strain techniques for application to the 45nm microprocessor process generation. AMD and IBM expect the first 45nm products using immersion lithography and ultra-low-K interconnect dielectrics to be available in mid-2008.

According to the Inquirer, NVIDIA, ATI and AMD could be in trouble for apparently conspiring to keep prices high. Allegedly executives of the companies have met to discuss the price of graphics processor units and therefore have received a summons by the Department of Justice, being asked to present data going back into the 1990s.

AMD has cut prices on four ATI products earlier this week. The products affected by the price cut include AMD ATI Radeon X1950 XTX, ATI Radeon X1950 CrossFire Edition, ATI Radeon 9550 and TV Wonder 200 PCI. Under the new pricing AMD ATI Radeon X1950 XTX and ATI Radeon X1950 CrossFire Edition will drop to $429 from the previous $449 while the ATI Radeon 9550 will drop to $79. AMD TV Wonder 200 PCI will drop down to $49. This is distributor pricing and only affects built by ATI products. It is unknown how the price cuts will affect retail pricing from local and online resellers. Other ATI products such as the Radeon X1950 Pro, X1650 Pro, TV Wonder 650 are unaffected.

Before the CPU's are available, AMD has decided to cut the prices. QuadFX processors are now $100 cheaper. The FX70 series will cost $499/699/899 for the FX70/72/74, respectively. The FX70 series of AMD CPU's should be available later this month.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is expected to become seventh in the iSuppli rankings, rising from fifteenth last year. Preliminary figures suggest that its revenue may have risen by as much as 90%. Intel remains at the top of the list as the number one chip supplier in the world despite a fall in revenue, with overall chip sales by all manufacturers rising 9%.

AMD has received a subpoena from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Antitrust Division in connection with the DOJ's investigation into potential antitrust violations related to graphics processors and cards. AMD entered the graphics processor business following the company's acquisition of ATI Technologies, Inc. last month (October 25, 2006). The DOJ has not made any specific allegations against AMD or ATI. AMD intends to cooperate with the investigation.

AMD today demonstrated the industry's first native quad-core x86 server processor, achieving four x86 processing cores on a single die of silicon. At the annual AMD Industry Analyst Forum, a server powered by four upcoming Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors (codenamed Barcelona), manufactured on 65nm silicon-on-insulator process technology, was shown utilizing all 16 cores. By delivering a consistent thermal envelope while adding two more processing cores, along with micro-architectural enhancements, AMD expects to significantly advance the performance-per-watt capabilities of AMD Opteron processors.
