Antec PSUs Achieve Lowest Failure Rate: Study

Antec, Inc., the global leader in high-performance computer components and accessories for the gaming, PC upgrade and Do-It-Yourself markets, has again achieved the lowest failure return rate for its power supply units (PSUs), based on the release of an independent comparative study on PSU failure return rates from Hardware.fr. The study, carried out by Hardware.fr, a leading French web site dedicated to providing the latest independent hardware information for consumers, placed Antec in the forefront of the competition for achieving the lowest overall failure rates of power supplies with consumers.

The comparison study utilized a calculation base of the number of power supplies sold between October 1, 2009 and April 1, 2010. The study parameters required the PSUs to have been active for six months to one year, and the failure rates of the PSUs measured were taken from a major French e-tailer. The statistics "per brand" were based on a minimum of 500 PSUs sold and the statistics "per model" were based on a minimum of 100 PSUs sold. For statistics "per brand", Antec earned a rating of 0.61 percent, securing its number one spot for having the lowest rate of power supply returns. The figure below displays the statistics "per brand" comparison results.

The third member in Antec's KÜHLER series of CPU coolers has come to like, following KÜHLER Shelf and KÜHLER Flow. The new KÜHLER is called "Box", and sports a dual aluminum fin tower design that places it on top of Antec's catalogue. The design consists of a CPU base and heatsink, from which eight copper heat pipes convey heat to two aluminum fin blocks. Between the two blocks is a 120 mm PWM-controlled fan that circulates air. The cooler measures 148 (H) x 122 (W) x 120 (D) mm, weighing all of 1.2 kg (2.65 lbs). It supports all current CPU socket types, including LGA1366, LGA1156, AM3, and LGA775. It is priced at US $66.

Measuring 122 (H) x 157 (W) x 108 (D) mm, it weighs 700 g, and uses a aluminum fin tower design with a slight change: that it's not right over the CPU base. This way, the 120 mm fan does not protrude into the memory slot area of the motherboard. Heat is conveyed to the aluminum fins by 7 copper heat pipes. The cooler supports all current CPU sockets, including LGA1366, LGA1156, AM3, and LGA775. The Australian etailer that listed the cooler priced it at AU $74 (US $65).

EVGA Ready with Case and PSU, Tailor-fit for Classified SR-2

EVGA is ready with a large full-tower case and power supply that's tailor-fit for the Classified SR-2 dual-socket LGA1366 motherboard, both carrying the Classified SR-2 brand markers for easy identification. The SR-2 case is larger than XL-ATX and EATX. Its motherboard tray is as wide as EATX, while being as long as XL-ATX. It has 10 expansion slots, 7 internal 3.5"/2.5" drive bay trays, 5 larger 5.25" trays, and holes punched out in the motherboard tray at the right spots to help manage CPU coolers for both the sockets better, and help with cable-management.

ASUS Radeon HD 5870 Sets GPU Speed Record of 1525 MHz (core)

In an overclocking feat by XtremeSystems community members Elmor and Kinc, an ASUS EAH5870 MATRIX Radeon HD 5870 graphics card was able to achieve a mind-boggling core speed of 1525 MHz (core) from its default speed of 894 MHz, and AMD reference speed of 850 MHz. This translates into 70% over default speeds, and 79% over reference speeds. The not-so-relevant memory overclock was 1300 MHz (5.2 GHz effective), an 8.3% overclock. The card was cooled using liquid-nitrogen evaporators.

This wasn't a "hit-and-run" feat, either. The stability of the GPU at 1500 MHz was proven with a run of 3DMark Vantage, where it scored P29342 points at the performance preset. The rest of the bench comprised of an Intel Core i7 980X Extreme Edition six-core processor running at 4492.9 MHz, at 1.52V, also cooled by liquid nitrogen, ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard, 6 GB of Corsair Dominator GTX DDR3 memory, and Antec 1200W power supply. The validation for the 3DMark Vantage run where it scored P30542 can be found here.

Antec Readies Airy LanBoy Air ATX Case

Antec is preparing the airy, new Lanboy Air ATX case. The new case will be one of Antec's star attractions at CES 2010, where it will be launched. The sporty design looks to be massively modular, from the looks of it, users could completely dismantle it. Several shards look to be connected to each other, which make for the case's various panels. Each of these has a steel mesh for high airflow. These, in combination with the black, grey and a dash of yellow, give it a subjectively industrial look.

The case sports three 5.25" drive bays, two 120 mm fans which protrude, and the the front connectors, on the front panel. The area of the side panel covering the drive bays holds another two to three 120 mm fans, two more right over the expansion slot area. The top, again, is perforated, with room for two 120 mm exhausts apart from the usual one on the rear panel. The LanBoy Air awaits launch at CES 2010, which will be held in the coming January. It is expected to be priced at around 200 EUR.

Antec Readies Six Hundred PC Case

There are three exposed 5.25" drive bays, one exposed 3.5" bay, and five internal 3.5" bays. The front bezel provides enough breathing-room for its two front 120 mm fans. The side panel is windowed, and the window is perforated to hold a fan over the expansion slot area of the motherboard. One 120 mm fan ventilates the case from the rear-panel, while a large 200 mm TriCool blue LED-illuminated fan ventilates it from the top. The utility panel that holds buttons, and front-panel connectors is located at the top. The PSU bay is in its rightful place, at the bottom, and two ports for water-cooling tubing are located next to the seven expansion brackets. The Six Hundred is listed for pre-order in Europe, priced at 60.80 EUR.

The 3.5-inch HDD/FDD external drive bay provides hot-swap capability. Including this, there are six 3.5-inch bays in all, below three 5.25-inch bays. The PSU bay is below the motherboard tray, which provides a gap for some basic cable-management. The motherboard tray further features a gap behind the CPU socket area, which allows users to manage CPU coolers with back-plates or bolt-through kits better. There is provision for five fans, that include the bundled 140 mm top fan, a 120 mm rear exhaust fan, along with two 120 mm intakes in the front, and one 120 mm side. The case will make it deeper into the value-mainstream, with an estimated price tag of US $59.

A two-stage drawer holds the motherboard on the top stage which is cooled by a large LED-lit 150 mm fan, and the lower stage holding the disk drives and power supply. The chassis holds one 5.25-inch drive using a quick-release drive bay. There is one quick-release and two fixed 2.5-inch (yes, 2.5-inch) drive bays.
