Alphacool Announces Eiswolf 2 360mm AIO VGA Coolers for GIGABYTE RTX 3080/3090 Cards

Alphacool today presents the Eiswolf 2 "All-in-One" solution for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080/3090 Gigabyte Gaming/Eagle graphics cards. The Eiswolf 2 uses the Alphacool 360 mm NexXxoS ST30 full copper radiator. For the fans, we use the 120 mm Alphacool Aurora Rise. This impressive fan with a max. static pressure of 3.17 mm/H2O, offers a max. air flow of 119.8m3/h. The speed range of the fan, from 0-2500rpm, is adjustable via PWM. The AIO is completed by the Eisblock Aurora water cooler. This not only cools the GPU chip, but actively cools all relevant components such as the memory and VRAM. It also has brilliant aRGB lighting.

All components used (radiator, fan, cooler, DC-LT 2 pump) including fittings and tubing are part of the Alphacool DIY range and are therefore available separately. The combination of all components results in a solution that is as easy to install as an AIO, but offers the performance of a pre-assembled and pre-filled custom loop. Only the pump housing for the DC-LT 2 pump is a custom-made item that is only part of the scope of delivery of the AIO solution and is therefore not available separately.

GIGABYTE Intros AORUS ARGB Fan Series

GIGABYTE introduced the AORUS ARGB Fan series. Sold in single-piece kits, these fans come in two variants based on size—120 mm (model: GP-AR120RFAN) and 140 mm (GP-AR140RFAN); and are visually characterized by eight ARGB LEDs located in the hub, diffused by the frosty-white impellers. The frame is back, with anti-vibration rubber padding along the mounts. The triangle-edged fan-blades are designed to maximize axial airflow, which can be traded in for lower speeds. The motors feature six slots (sets of winding), and a sleeved bearing with "graphene nano lubricant," which GIGABYTE claims offers 15% lower noise levels and double the lifespan than double ball-bearing designs.

The AORUS 120 ARGB Fan turns at speeds of 800 to 1,700 RPM, with airflow ranging between 18.52 to 40.85 CFM, pressure of 0.37 to 1.48 mm H₂O, and noise output of 7.3 to 28.6 dBA. Its sleeved bearing is rated for 73,500 hours. The AORUS 140 ARGB Fan, on the other hand, does the same 800 to 1,700 RPM, but thanks to its larger impeller, puts out 30.3 to 60.64 CFM of airflow, 0.59 to 2.18 mm H₂O pressure, and 8.9 to 35.8 dBA noise output, with the same 73,500-hour bearing lifespan. Both fans feature 4-pin PWM inputs for their main function, and 3-pin ARGB for the lighting. GIGABYTE is backing both with 3-year warranties. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Gigabyte Unveils its New U4-series of Ultralight Notebooks

The Ultrabook name seems to have faded away, but the concept has clearly not gone anywhere and Gigabyte has announced its new U4-series of what they simply call ultralight notebooks. This is also the first 14-inch notebook series from Gigabyte in a while, since the company has focused on 15.6 and 17.3-inch models over the past couple of years' with the last 14-inch model from the company being the AERO 14.

The U4-series is quite a different beast, as the AERO 14 was still weighing in at 1.89 kg, whereas the U4 is almost half that at 990 grams. If you're a sucker for sturdy products, then this might be what you've been waiting for, as Gigabyte claims it meets the MIL-STD 810G specification, which means that the product has gone through "simulation-testing has been conducted in eight harsh working environments, including extreme altitude, temperature and humidity, mechanical vibration, sand and dust, salt fog, etc."

Cancelled Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti 20GB Achieves 98 MH/s in Ethereum Mining

NVIDIA was originally planning to release the RTX 3080 Ti with 20 GB of memory however this was changed shortly before the official announcement to 12 GB. This plan came very close to fruition with NVIDIA manufacturing and distributing these GPU's to board partners including Gigabyte, some of these completed cards have now been sold in limited quantities. The Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti 20 GB Gaming OC was purchased by a Russian YouTuber who tested the card's cryptocurrency mining performance and uploaded the BIOS to our GPU database.

The RTX 3080 Ti 20 GB lacks official NVIDIA Game Ready drivers with Gigabyte Russia denying the existence of the model making cryptocurrency mining the only viable use for the product. The card doesn't feature the Lite Hash Rate (LHR) algorithm NVIDIA has been including on all their new cards including the RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB giving it excellent performance in Ethereum mining. The retailer had pre-configured the card with a 100 MHz boost clock increase and a 1000 MHz boost to the memory speed along with a TDP limiter of 80%.

Graphics Card Prices Increased Up To 92 USD in China Last Month

Chinese news site MyDrivers have recently reported on increasing graphics card prices in China over the last month. These price increases come as a result of reduced GPU shipments especially of the NVIDIA RTX 3060 whose supply is down 50% with improvements not expected for several weeks. The site has tracked the prices for popular cards from ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI with increases across the board ranging from a 12 USD increase on the Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti up to a 92 USD increase on the ASUS RTX 3070 Ti. These supply impacts have impacted NVIDIA to a greater extent than AMD but the general price increases are likely indicative of the global trend over the coming weeks.

Gigabyte Z690 AORUS Master & Elite Motherboards Listed for Sale

The Gigabyte Z690 AORUS MASTER and Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE AX motherboards have recently been listed for sale at an Australian retailer. The LGA1700 motherboards will support Intel's upcoming Alder Lake 12th Generation Core series processors which are expected to launch in November. The motherboards were listed for 768.90 AUD and 438.90 AUD which equates to 572 USD and 327 USD respectively. These prices are approximately 10% more than their equivalent Z590 versions which should provide a good indication of general pricing for all upcoming Z690 motherboards.

The listings state that the Gigabyte Z690 AORUS MASTER will feature DDR4 memory compatibility which may be a mistake as manufacturers have announced that some high-end boards will be offered with DDR5 support. The motherboards will likely be some of the first consumer boards to support PCIe 5.0 which will enable faster storage with supported drives. These motherboards should be available to purchase in the coming months when Intel officially launches their 12th Gen Core series processors and Z690 chipset.

Newegg Offers Refunds or Replacements to GIGABYTE P-series GM Power Supplies

Newegg is one of the retailers that extensively pushed volumes of GIGABYTE's now-disgraced P-series GM power supplies. The store had sold bundles of the power supply with GIGABYTE-branded graphics cards. It is now writing to everyone it sold these PSUs to, offering two options—refund or replacement. Those opting for refund can simply turn their PSUs in for a refund; or opt for a replacement with a PSU that GIGABYTE revised to correct the problem. Since the design flaw is also a potential fire hazard, there is extreme scrutiny from consumer-protection agencies. The e-mail includes contact details on what range of serial numbers are affected, and who to reach out for. Below is a screenshot of the e-mail from faisalkhatib, who originally shared it with VideoCardz.

No PCIe Gen5 for "Raphael," Says Gigabyte's Leaked Socket AM5 Documentation

AMD might fall behind Intel on PCI-Express Gen 5 support, say sources familiar with the recent GIGABYTE ransomware attack and ensuing leak of confidential documents. If you recall, AMD had extensively marketed the fact that it was first-to-market with PCI-Express Gen 4, over a year ahead of Intel's "Rocket Lake" processor. The platform block-diagram for Socket AM5 states that the AM5 SoC puts out a total of 28 PCI-Express Gen 4 lanes. 16 of these are allocated toward PCI-Express discrete graphics, 4 toward a CPU-attached M.2 NVMe slot, another 4 lanes toward a discrete USB4 controller, and the remaining 4 lanes as chipset-bus.

Socket AM5 SoCs appear to have an additional 4 lanes to spare than the outgoing "Matisse" and "Vermeer" SoCs, which on higher-end platforms are used up by the USB4 controller, but can be left unused for the purpose, and instead wired to an additional M.2 NVMe slot on lower-end motherboards. Thankfully, memory is one area where AMD will maintain parity with Intel, as Socket AM5 is being designed for dual-channel DDR5. The other SoC-integrated I/O, as well as I/O from the chipset, appear to be identical to "Vermeer," with minor exceptions such as support for 20 Gbps USB 3.2x2. The Socket has preparation for display I/O for APUs from the generation. Intel's upcoming "Alder Lake-S" processor implements PCI-Express Gen 5, but only for the 16-lane PEG port. The CPU-attached NVMe slot, as well as downstream PCIe connectivity, are limited to PCIe Gen 4.

GIGABYTE, AMD & Intel Confidential Documents Published Online

You might remember our recent post about the major GIGABYTE hack by attacker group RansomEXX where they stole 112 GB of data including confidential technical documents from Intel and AMD in addition to various GIGABYTE files. The attack occurred the week of August 2 and resulted in the temporary closure of GIGABYTE's headquarters, it would appear that GIGABYTE did not reach an agreement with the attackers as the first 7 GB of these documents have now been published online. The files were uploaded to RansomEXX's public website and included confidential AMD documents along with the source code for the Intel Manageability Commander. These documents have already confirmed the details of AMD's upcoming Ryzen Threadripper 5000 lineup and Socket AM5 cooler compatibility, we expect the hackers will continue to publish the stolen data unless an agreement is reached with GIGABYTE.

GIGABYTE Reportedly Refuses to RMA Customer's GP-P750GM Power Supply

If you have been following the recent drama of GIGABYTE selling exploding power supplies, then you are aware of the happenings with GIGABYTE response, our PSU expert's response, and of course the massive backlash from customers. Today, according to a Reddit user u/Tinefol, GIGABYTE has refused to RMA the power supply that is eligible for the RMA program. The user is an owner of the GP-P750GM unit, which is part of the exploding units. He proceeded to open a ticket where he included the wordings from the company's press release, to which he got a response that "This press release is applicable only to the newer batches".

However, that is not the case. The press release states that GIGABYTE will offer RMA service on various models with the supported serial numbers. In the case of GP-P750GM PSUs, the RMA service is available for units with serial numbers ranging from SN20243G001301 to SN20453G025430. The customer that requested RMA has serial number SN20243G001306, which is eligible for return and exchange. The ticket response of "This press release is applicable only to the newer batches" holds no value as the press release does not refer to production time, but rather serial numbers of PSUs.

PSU Expert Aris Mpitziopoulos Responds to Gigabyte Statement on GP-P750/850 GM Design Flaws

Cybenetics certification program's chief engineer, a renowned expert with switching power supplies, and TechPowerUp contributor, Dr Aris Mpitziopoulos, released detailed commentary on the recent statement released by GIGABYTE on the GP-P750/850 GM series PSU design flaw reportage in the press. The earliest of this was broken on TechPowerUp, with our December 2020 review of the GP-P750GM, which led with the headline "With an Explosive Attitude."

Mpitziopoulos dives into the technical details of the design flaw being not just a badly programmed Over-Power Protection (OPP) safety mechanism, but a flawed hardware design overall. Since he reviewed PSUs from this series for TechPowerUp and Hardware Busters, he shares his perspective on how the reviews went, more importantly, the back-and-forth with GIGABYTE when the flaws were discovered.
The following is a statement by Aris Mpitziopoulos:

GIGABYTE Releases Statement on GP-P850GM & GP-P750GM PSUs

GIGABYTE is aware of certain media outfits casting doubt over the quality of Power Supply models GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM. GIGABYTE takes pride in the design and quality of our products and as such, takes reports of this manner extremely seriously and therefore would like to address the reported potential issues as follows:

For desktop PC systems, there can occasionally be instances where the peak wattage can exceed the intended usage range. During such instances, the GIGABYTE GP-P850GM / GP-P750GM model power supplies include the industry standard built-in safety feature "Over Power Protection" (OPP). The OPP safety feature is designed to shut down the unit when the power load exceeds the wattage the unit was designed to operate within. The OPP was set to 120% to 150%, 1020 W~1300 W for GP-P850GM, and 900 W~1125 W for the GP-P750GM.

GIGABYTE Hacked, Attackers Threaten to Leak Confidential Intel, AMD, AMI Documents

PC components major GIGABYTE has reportedly been hacked, with the attacker group, which goes by the name RansomEXX, stealing 112 GB in data that contains confidential technical documents from Intel, AMD, and others; which are released to GIGABYTE under strict NDAs, to help it design motherboards, notebooks, desktops, servers, and graphics cards. The group also deployed ransomware to encrypt GIGABYTE's data, which includes these documents. The attack allegedly occurred in the week of August 2, and GIGABYTE was forced to shut down its systems in its Taiwan headquarters. This even caused some downtime for its websites.

While it's conceivable that a company of GIGABYTE's scale would maintain timely cold backups of its data, and can recover almost everything RansomEXX encrypted, there's another aspect to this attack, and it's the data the attackers stole. They threaten to leak the data if a ransom isn't paid in time. This would put a large amount of confidential documents, including motherboard designs, UEFI/BIOS/TPM data/keys, etc., out in the public domain. GIGABYTE didn't comment on the issue beyond stating that it has isolated the affected servers from the rest of its network and notified law enforcement.

GIGABYTE's 2021 AORUS Gaming Box eGPU Packs RTX 3080 Ti, Liquid Cooling

The 2021 GIGABYTE AORUS Gaming Box external GPU was debuted late last week. It introduces many firsts for a market less addressed this generation, particularly due to the GPU shortage. The lineup debuts with a model based on NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and introduces a liquid-cooling. The box uses an all-in-one, closed-loop liquid cooler to tame the RTX 3080 Ti, using a 240 mm x 120 mm radiator and a pair of 120 mm fans located inside the box, while additional fans ventilate the rest of its innards.

For all its might, the card is bound to be bottlenecked by its interface—a single 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 connection that gives the GPU the equivalent of a PCI-Express 3.0 x4 interface. Our RTX 3080 non-Ti PCI Express Scaling article shows that the GPU loses 12% performance on PCI-Express 1.1 x16 (comparable bandwidth to PCIe 3.0 x4). Other features of the AORUS Gaming Box include a USB 3.0 hub, and addressable RGB lighting that you can control using the RGB Fusion software. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability, but one can expect a roughly $300-400 markup over whatever the running rate of an RTX 3080 Ti these days, is. GIGABYTE is expected to carve out more Gaming Box products based on the same chassis, but using different GPUs.
