Corsair Gaming Reports First Quarter 2023 Financial Results

Corsair Gaming, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRSR), a leading global provider and innovator of high-performance gear for gamers, streamers, content-creators, and gaming PC builders, today announced financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2023.

Andy Paul, Chief Executive Officer of Corsair, stated, "We are off to a strong start to 2023 with a 33% improvement in adjusted EBITDA compared to the year ago period. We are thrilled to see that enthusiast-level consumers continue to build new gaming PCs at a rate significantly above pre-pandemic levels. Recent third party data shows that Corsair continues to gain and hold leading market share positions in most of our categories of components used in those builds. The broader market for gaming peripherals is also holding up at a level significantly above pre-pandemic levels, although slightly behind 2022 levels, most notably in Europe. During 2023 we started to ship many new innovative products, including our FLEX OLED bendable monitor, engineered in partnership with LG. With lower priced GPUs coming to market and exciting new game titles being released this year, we are confident that the gaming market will continue to grow off the higher recent levels and we believe that Corsair can continue to gain market share in many of the new categories we are entering."

Report Suggests Samsung and LG Pushing Wider Adoption of LED Wall Displays at Cinemas

Samsung and LG are among an number of tech companies reportedly pushing for radical changes in the cinema viewing experience. In a piece published by the Hollywood Reporter last week, new behind-the-scenes information has come to light about an effort to replace the (some will say tried and true) traditional cinema theater projection system with LED walls. The vast majority of international theater chains rely on a front projection method (via a back of the booth), and very few locations have a more state-of-the-art LED display-based system in place. The Culver Theater (naturally located in Culver City, CA) is one of a hundred cinemas worldwide to possess a Samsung Onyx LED display - although the tech on show is said to be of an older standard. Industry insiders have been invited to attend demonstrations of a newer generation LED wall technology destined for cinemas in the future, and early impressions are purported to be mixed.

A cinema-based LED wall display functions in a similar way to how a modern LED-based flat screen TV works - although on a much greater massive scale - with particular benefits of the technology resulting in fantastic performance in terms of high dynamic range and peak brightness. The main downside of having a tightly packed array of large LED panels is the resultant heat output - critics of the technology state that it will be difficult to implement an adequate cooling system (through air conditioning) to tame the wall's temperature increasing properties. The power required to operate the LED panel array (plus required cooling solution) is said to be much higher than that of an old-fashioned projector's relatively modest draw from the electricity supply. An LED wall will also completely negate the traditional placement of loudspeakers behind a cinema's front-placed screen - and sound engineers will need to explore a different method of front audio channel output within the context of a next generation LED theater room.

Shipments of Gaming Monitors Fell to 19.8 Million Units in 2022, Expected to Recover in 2023

TrendForce's latest research revealed that shipments of gaming monitors have seen their first decline since 2016 due to high inflation, resulting in only 19.8 million units being shipped in 2022 for a 13% YoY decline. TrendForce predicts that demand should recover in 2023 however, jumping back up to 20.8 million units—an increase of 5% YoY. This recovery will mostly be driven by three factors: First, a number of brands are replacing their 75 Hz models with 100 Hz models. Second, the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games is scheduled to take place in the third quarter, where Esports is set to be one of the competing categories. This will help drive up demand for gaming products. Lastly, China has finally begun lifting COVID restrictions, which means demand for Internet cafes should gradually recover.

TrendForce reveals that vertical alignment (VA) LCD monitors took the lion's share of the market in 2022 at 51%. This was followed by in-plane switching (IPS) LCD monitors at 43.4%, and finally twisted nematic (TN) LCD monitors accounted for 5%. However, it's worth noting that OLED gaming monitors have grown in popularity, taking 0.6% of the market share in 2022. Thanks to the diversification of OLED products, that market share is expected to grow to 1.6% in 2023. Furthermore, TrendForce predicts that IPS monitors may begin competing with VA monitors given that not only are IPS products increasing their market share but many IPS gaming monitors are seeing a continuous price reduction.

Angry Miao Launches AM AFA, the World's First Alice Keyboard with 3-stage Adjustable Leaf-spring Mount, Starting at $680

On November 1, 2022, Angry Miao officially launched AM AFA, the world's first mechanical Alice keyboard with 3-stage adjustable leaf-spring mount for 18 different typing combos. At the same time, Angry Miao announced the Hover Ergonomic Maglev Wrist Rest, provided as a free gift with all AM AFA purchases. AM AFA takes its inspiration from one of the Angry Miao team's favorite mecha animes with its fighter jet-like forward-swept design. Like a fighter jet, AM AFA excels in next-level design, mounting system, and craftsmanship.

Hollowing out the metal frame of AM AFA takes over 7 hours and is done using high-precision 5-axis CNC machinery. Its smooth edges are carefully cut and polished. After 2 hours of manual grinding and sandblasting of each single piece, AM AFA receives its body finish through anodizing, electrophoresis, or baked paint. The design of the AM AFA's adjustable leaf-spring mount takes its inspiration from height adjustable coilover suspension seen on cars since the 1950s. Coilovers allow for stiffness and range adjustment of the car's suspension, and Angry Miao's three-stage adjustable leaf-spring mount brings a similar experience to keyboards. Benefiting from the advantages of the Alice keyboard layout, AM AFA has built-in three-stage leaf-spring with adjustable gears. Just place the rubber stopper in a different gear to adjust the flex of the inner assembly, and experience keyboard flex with different levels of softness and hardness.

Gaming Monitor Market Faces Inaugural Downturn with 2022 Shipments Downgraded to 20.5 Million Units

According to the latest TrendForce research, shipments of gaming monitors are in decline for the first time since the product category was launched to market, with 2022 estimates lowered to 20.5 million units, a 10% drop YoY. The primary reasons for this downgrade are intensifying inflation in Europe and spiking interest rates in North America which have upset and displaced demand for consumer electronics products. In addition, delays in launching high-end graphics cards has also led some e-sports consumers to consider postponing purchases.

According to TrendForce, judging from the market share of flat and curved gaming monitors, curved gaming surfaces accounted for approximately 41% of the market in 2021. In 2022, this share will increase to 44% and is expected to have a chance to reach 46% in 2023. In addition to an increased supply of curved monitor panels and their high price-performance ratio, growth in the market share of Ultra-Wide products is also one of the reasons for the rise of curved products.

Logitech G FITS Gaming Earbuds Leak

Back in October 2020, Logitech launched the Ultimate Ears UE FITS earbuds, with its unique feature being custom moldable tips. This in itself wasn't something new, but the trick here was that it could be done at home, using built in LEDs in the earbuds that warmed out the gel-like material, something referred to as Lightform Technology. Now it looks like Logitech is about to launch an updated version of the FITS under its Logitech G gaming brand, based on a leak from 91mobiles. The overall design remains the same from what we can tell from the pictures, although we don't know if anything has changed on the inside.

What we do know is that the Logitech G FITS will come with a USB dongle, as well as what looks like a USB-A to USB-C adapter, so the G FITS can be used with both PCs and consoles, in addition to phones and tablets. The UE FITS have dropped significantly in price since launch, as they now retail for around US$179, versus US$249 at launch. We'd expect Logitech to charge slightly more for the G FITS, due to the inclusion of the USB dongle.
