MSI Announces the R9 290X LIGHTNING

The all new MSI R9 290X LIGHTNING has been upgraded and improved to deliver the fastest single GPU graphics experience. With dozens of improvements across the board, the R9 290X LIGHTNING epitomizes the no-holds-barred overclocking attitude that drove the development of world's fastest single GPU graphics card.

The design reminisces of MSI's greatest Lightning series graphics cards, like 2x 8-pin and 1x 6-pin power connectors on board guaranteeing a minimum of 450W available for overclocking. The TriFrozr Thermal Design has been optimized to more efficiently dissipate heat from the GPU and on-board components to ensure class-leading results. The GDDR5 memory on the R9 290X LIGHTNING has been optimized in cooperation with AMD to deliver the best overclocking results whether cooled on by air or through extreme cooling like Liquid Nitrogen (LN2.)

MSI Radeon R9 290X Gaming OC Pictured

At a press event held in Japan, MSI showed off its second non-reference design Radeon R9 290X graphics card besides the R9 290X Lightning, the R9 290X TwinFrozr 4S Gaming OC. The card features MSI's top-grade TwinFrozr IV cooling solution with the red+black color scheme; and a non-reference design PCB by MSI. Its PCB will feature a strong VRM, a voltage controller that's fully accessible using Afterburner, factory-overclocked speeds, and a back-plate decking up the rear portion of the card, even though there's nothing on the rear side of the PCB that requires active cooling. Since the card features a BIOS-toggle switch, you can expect one of the two BIOS ROMs to feature a failsafe BIOS with reference clock speeds. MSI is expected to launch the card a little later this month. The R9 290X Lightning, however, can't be expected before 2014. One could expect a similar-looking card (perhaps minus the back-plate) based on the R9 290 (non-X).

MSI GTX 780 Lightning Lite Edition Card Pictured and Detailed

As if one GTX 780 Lightning wasn't enough, MSI is currently preparing the release of another such card, a 'Lite Edition' with the same features but lower clocks. The LE model comes with 889/941 MHz Base/Boost GPU clocks while the already-released GTX 780 Lightning is set to 980/1033 MHz.

The GTX 780 Lightning LE also has Military Class components, a 10-layer PCB, a GPU Reactor for improved overclocking stability, a TriFrozr cooler, Pure Digital PWM Control, Twin BIOS, a 16+3 phase power design, and the 'usual' - 2304 CUDA Cores, 3 GB of GDDR5 memory set to 6008 MHz, and dual-DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort output. The card's price tag has not been revealed.

MSI Teases Transparent TwinFrozr Cooling Solution

MSI just teased a new VGA cooling solution it's working on, which will likely feature on its upcoming Radeon R9 290 series graphics cards. It's expected to be a long and tall variant of TwinFrozr IV designed for high-end chips like GK110 and "Hawaii," and will feature a frosty see-through acrylic shroud covering the aluminium fin-stack heatsink. TwinFrozr IV is MSI's workhorse VGA cooler for its Gaming, Lightning, and HAWK series of factory-overclocked graphics cards.

Custom Design Radeon R9 290 to Launch Ahead of Custom Design R9 290X

AMD missed its late-November window for giving its partners enough Radeon R9 290 series chips to roll out their custom-design boards in time for Christmas (the winter shopping season). It turns out that custom-design R9 290 and R9 290X cards could launch perilously close to Christmas, or miss it altogether, and launch next year. Custom design R9 290 series cards are highly anticipated as the press didn't receive the reference-design cooling solution of the two cards as well as it did the chips themselves. Reference design coolers, reviews revealed, are not only noisy, but also don't cool the GPUs well enough to prevent throttling under gaming loads.

Barring the recent reveal of MSI's Radeon R9 290X Lightning PCB, we've not come across a single custom-design R9 290 series card. Sources told ComputerBase.de that custom-design R9 290 (non-X) cards could launch first, in the mid/late-December thru January time-frame, and R9 290X could follow "later." One AIB partner which did not want to be named, attributed it to under-supply of the "Hawaii" silicon, and not any design defects that AMD is working to correct. The Radeon R9 290 (reference) is priced at $399.99, and the R9 290X for $549.99.

MSI GeForce GTX 780 Lightning Pictured

Ahead of its launch, pictures of MSI's GeForce GTX 780 Lightning graphics cards were leaked to the web by HardwareZone (now redacted), and reposted by WCCFTech. Pictures reveal never before seen PCB and cooler designs. To begin with, MSI is using a brand new cooling solution called TriFrozr. It combines a large compound dual fin-stack heatsink, to which heat is fed by seven 8 mm-thick heat pipes, with an array of three fans, two larger 100 mm ones on the edges, and a smaller 70 mm one in the center. The fans feature independent control system, which lets you tweak speeds of individual fans, over software. An LED-lit badge doubles up as a GPU load indicator. A swanky back-plate lines the reverse side.

Under this elaborate cooling solution is a brute of a PCB. Drawing power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors, the custom-design PCB by MSI features a 20-phase digital PWM voltage regulation, which use a combination of high current chokes, International Rectifier PowIRstage, DirectFET chips, tantalum capacitors, and MSI's GPU Reactor module that cuts out electrical noise. The GPU is wired to 7 GT/s rated Elpida-branded memory chips, and three (that's right, three) GPU BIOS ROMs. One stores a failsafe reference BIOS, another factory-OC air BIOS, and one that primes the GPU for liquid-nitrogen cooling-assisted overclocking. MSI is expected to launch the GTX 780 Lightning on August 28, 2013, priced around $800.

MSI Teases GeForce GTX 780 Lightning Some More

In the run up to its 7th August launch, MSI GeForce GTX 780 Lightning got teased by the company's Europe office some more. Adding to the abstract "I can hear thunder" video presentation from earlier this month, MSI posted three new pictures. The first one depicts the "Lightning" engraving onto the cooler shroud. The second one reveals a new GPU Reactor module that isn't an unforgivable color mismatch this time around. Lastly, there's one that gives us a glimpse of its cooler, particularly its fan, which borrows a few design ideas from NVIDIA, and its metal fan hubs in use since GeForce GTX 690, GTX Titan and some other reference design boards.

MSI GeForce GTX 780 Lightning Release Date Surfaces

MSI posted a reveal trailer (yeah, we have those for graphics cards now) for its flagship GeForce GTX 780 Lightning graphics card. In addition to the highest factory-overclock among MSI's ranks (currently held by the GTX 780 Gaming Series), the card reportedly features redundant BIOS, and a feature that lifts various BIOS-level limits, protections, or fail-safes. If we understand this correctly, the GTX 780 Lightning should be among the first GK110-based graphics cards to feature over-voltage beyond NVIDIA's limits. Very little is known about the card's design, but given that MSI's new TwinFrozr IV cooling solution leaves GTX 780 Gaming Series with overclocking headroom, and runs cool enough, it wouldn't surprise us if MSI sticks to that cooler, albeit paint it yellow. As for the release date, MSI plans to launch the card on the 7th of August, 2013.
The reveal trailer follows.

MSI Launches a Pair of GeForce GTX 770 Graphics Cards

MSI kicked off its GeForce GTX 770 lineup with two models, the GTX 770 Gaming Series, and the GTX 770 Lightning, both of which are factory-overclocked models. The Gaming Series card (model: N770TF/2GD5 OC) ships with 1098 MHz core, 1150 MHz GPU Boost, and 7010 MHz memory; while the Lightning (model: N770Lightning), ships with 1150 MHz core, 1202 MHz GPU Boost, and the same 7010 MHz memory. Both cards come with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory.

The GTX 770 Gaming Series OC features a new generation TwinFrozr cooling solution with large 100 mm fans, and the sexy red+black color scheme, paired with the Gaming Series "dragon" emblem. The GTX 770 Lightning, on the other hand, features the same TwinFrozr IV cooling solution we find on the GTX 680 Lightning. Based on the 28 nm GK104 silicon, the GeForce GTX 770 packs 1536 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. MSI didn't reveal pricing or availability information.

MSI Outs GeForce GTX 680 Lightning-L Graphics Card

MSI released a slightly slower yet cheaper variant of its GeForce GTX 680 Lightning graphics card, the GTX 680 Lightning-L, in Japan. Identical in every way possible to the original launched back in June 2012, the card features clock speeds of 1019 MHz core, 1084 MHz GPU Boost, and 6008 MHz memory, against the original's 1110 MHz core, 1176 MHz GPU Boost, and 6008 MHz memory; and NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of 1006 MHz core, 1058 MHz GPU Boost, and 6008 MHz memory. Since the components on the card haven't changed, MSI may have created quite some OC headroom for enthusiasts munch on, with their own skills. It remains to be seen if the GTX 680 Lightning-L makes it to other markets.

MSI Announces Radeon HD 7970 Lightning Boost Edition Graphics Card

MSI maintained the R7970 Lightning as its flagship AMD Radeon graphics card from March, even after AMD launched the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition in June. The company finally decided to combine its R7970 Lightning board with the new "Tahiti XT2" Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition ASIC, creating the R7970 Lightning Boost Edition (BE). While the original R7970 Lightning shipped with 1070 MHz core and 5.60 GHz memory, the new R7970 Lightning BE ships with 1070 MHz core, 1150 MHz PowerTune Boost, and 6.00 GHz memory (288 GB/s). It packs 3 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 384-bit wide memory interface.

Most other features remain the same. The R7970 Lightning BE packs an enthusiast-grade 17-phase VRM, dual-BIOS, voltage-conditioning GPU Reactor module, and TwinFrozr IV cooling solution. Quite shockingly, MSI didn't take the opportunity to address the lack of dual-link DVI connectors in the original R7970 Lightning, the Lightning BE continues to have two single-link DVI, and four mini-DisplayPort connectors. The new R7970 Lightning BE could displace the original from its US $499.99 price-point.

MSI Readies Liquid-Cooled HD 7970 GHz Edition Lightning Graphics Card

The performance lead that MSI's Radeon HD 7970 Lightning maintained over reference HD 7970 was cut down, first by NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680, and then by AMD's own Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, leaving its engineers to go back to the drawing boards, and design an even faster graphics card. The result: a liquid-cooled HD 7970 GHz Edition Lightning graphics card, which could push clock-speeds up even further. The card ships with a pre-installed full-coverage water-block, made by EK WaterBlocks (EKWB). It comes ready for 6-display Eyefinity, with four mini-DisplayPort and two DVI. Here's hoping one of those is a dual-link DVI. More details are awaited.

Update: We've received word that it's not that MSI has a new product in the works, but that EKWB has a water-block tailored for MSI's existing R7970 Lightning.
