OCZ Technology Launches New Low-cost Core Series Solid State Drives

Yesterday, OCZ silently released new solid state drives, part of the company's Solid series line-up. There's still no sign of a press release, but the drives are already starting to appear at some etailers. These are not the Core V3 SSDs we covered here two days ago, but new budget solid state drives. The new value-minded SSDs come in a 2.5-inch form factor, have a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, one mini USB port and a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 1.5 million hours. The SSDs do claim 155MB/s read and 90MB/s write speeds and are shock resistant. OCZ's new Solid SSDs are available in 30GB (OCZSSD2-1SLD30G), 60GB (OCZSSD2-1SLD60G) and 120GB (OCZSSD2-1SLD120G) models, priced at $89, $159 and $299 respectively. All drives have a two year warranty.

OCZ Technology Readies Brand New Core V3 Solid State Drives

During the DIY PC Expo 2008 in Japan, OCZ Technology unveiled that it will be updating its Core series of solid state drives. The third generation MLC (multi-level cell) NAND-based Core V3 models will bring higher read and write speeds that exceed 230MB/s read and 160MB/s write speeds, a lot more than the 170MB/s (read) and 98MB/s (write) offered by today's Core V2 SSDs. The new Core V3 SSDs will come in a 2.5-inch form factor, and will boast a SATA 3.0G Gbit/s interface. Most likely OCZ will release models that range from 32GB to 256GB in capacity. The rest of the details are still unknown.

Even though PC Power & Cooling is the premium power supply brand in the OCZ Technology Group, there are sometimes products that OCZ wants to release under their own name.

One of these is this OCZ Fatal1ty branded power supply. It is still going through its final design stages. The cables are colored in red, the Fatal1ty logo is lit up red and the fan is red as well. Exact specs are still unknown, but expect something in the 850+ W range - we counted four PCI-Express 8-pin power connectors.

OCZ Could Bring NIA to Gaming Consoles

OCZ Technology could take the Neural Impulse Actuator (NIA), a device that provides input by interpreting brain waves to a PC, to gaming consoles where they replace the function of game-controllers. Using the device you could play games with complex and sometimes rapid control such as Unreal Tournament or Crysis without using your hands on a PC, proving it could provide a device input at a very rapid rate. TechRadar met Tobias Brinkmann, director of marketing at OCZ. Brinkmann told that the company was looking into the possibility of developing the NIA to function as an input device for major gaming consoles.

"It's definitely something we are looking into," he said. "The thing we think would be most cool is to get the NIA working with the Nintendo Wii - that would be good. But of course it would be great if we could get it working with all the consoles." Brinkmann also revealed that in the past Microsoft made attempts to acquire the technology from OCZ which was turned down by OCZ, pointing at the potential this technology has.
