PC Graphics Market on Track for Post-pandemic Correction

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has responded to the recent dramatic reports by Canalys, Gartner, and IDC showing a precipitous drop in Q3 2022 PC shipments. In addition, JPR is providing guidance on the impact to graphics chip and AIB shipments. Jon Peddie, president and founder of JPR, said, "Our advice to clients has been consistent since 2020: The pandemic boom was not a surge in demand brought about by real growth in the market. The PC market is now correcting itself after a period of extraordinary growth spurred on by spending from an overwhelming surge of users working from home."

Peddie continued, "People were forced to work at home in 2020 and 2021, and many needed equipment. As a result, PC sales surged. Those people have what they need, and some of them are going back to the office. They don't need new PCs, and won't for three to five years. So, we are back to the nominal growth of the PC market, which was, and will be again after two quarters' adjustment, tracking GNP growth."

Intel Said to be Considering Laying Off Thousands of Staff

The world is without a doubt entering a recession and now the first rumours of mass layoffs in the tech industry are starting. According to Bloomberg, Intel is considering laying off thousands of employees as a measure to cut costs, as its businesses are slowing down. Bloomberg is mainly citing the PC market, which the publication calls Intel's main business, although Intel's Client Computing Group (CCG) does a lot more than just selling PC chips, but the group was Intel's largest source of revenue in Q2 this year by quite some margin. That said, despite a revenue of US$7.7 billion in Q2, this was down 25 percent compared to 2021, which in all fairness was a record year for most companies in the PC industry.

According to Bloomberg, Intel had 113,700 employees as of July this year and the publication said Intel is considering cutting as much as 20 percent of its sales and marketing staff. Bloomberg is expecting Intel to be looking at reducing fixed costs by 10 to 15 percent, although this is unlikely to affect key parts of Intel's business units. Last quarter, most of Intel's business units made a healthy profit, but only the Network and Edge Group had a significant revenue increase over the same quarter in 2021, with most other groups being down significantly. The third quarter results aren't expected to improve upon things, something that appears to be reflected in Intel's share price, which is down over 50 percent in 2022. That said, all of Intel's competitors are in the same boat and it's likely that we'll see more news about companies that are considering trimming back on their expenses and staff numbers in the near future. Intel is scheduled to report its third quarter earnings on the 27th of October.

Worldwide PC Shipments Decline Another 15.0% in the Third Quarter of 2022, According to IDC Tracker

Declines continued for the traditional PC market as global shipments totaled 74.3 million units during the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. Cooling demand and uneven supply have contributed to a year-over-year contraction of 15.0%. However, shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were largely driven by commercial refreshes due to the looming end of support for Windows 7.

"Consumer demand has remained muted though promotional activity from the likes of Apple and other players has helped soften the fall and reduce channel inventory by a couple weeks across the board," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. "Supply has also reacted to the new lows by reducing orders with Apple being the only exception as their third quarter supply increased to make up for lost orders stemming from the lockdowns in China during the second quarter."

South Korea's IC Production Slides for the First Time in Years

The economic downturn keeps pushing the PC and related manufacturing markets down, following slumps in demand stemming from increased cost of living, the veritable arms race to technological products during COVID-19, and manufacturer's efforts to increase output to provide enough product to meet said demand. But all that goes up must eventually come down, and now South Korean manufacturers are facing the result of months of decreased consumption, with stock levels increasing ahead of actual product uptake (stocks have reached 67.3% of produced goods and factory shipments have declined 20.4%). This has now led to a 1.7% decline in August's output when compared to the same period last year - the first time the South Korean industry has seen negative growth since 2018.

Samsung and Kioxia both have announced a reduction in production output in the months to come, which should give distribution enough time to clear some of the accumulated inventory. The scales of production typically occur in cycles - ones with excess manufacturing against demand, and other times where the reverse happens. It seems we're now in the descending part of the spectrum, with prices - especially of NAND - being expected to drop in the coming months. It will take a while until the manufacturing reduction makes itself felt in the overall IC pricing landscape. Micron too has announced it's slowing down the production ramp-up of its 232-layer 3D NAND so as not to contribute in excess towards an already over-saturated market.

Acer Announces Entry Into Discrete GPU Market with Intel Arc A770

PC hardware specialist Acer today on Twitter announced its official entry into the discrete GPU market with its own-brand Intel Arc GPUs. The company will be pulling its gaming-oriented Predator branding for the launch of its very own Intel Arc A770, the Predator BiFrost. Despite going in with the newest discrete GPU manufacturer, Acer's attempt at taking on the thin-margin discrete GPU field marks an interesting entry - at least from a design standpoint. The new Arc A770 BiFrost features an asymmetrical dual-fan setup peppered with RGB lighting and industrial detailing throughout in what seems to be a semi-blower-type design. The card's design is somewhat reminiscent of NVIDIA's take on its Founder Editions, with a number of visible screws that help break up the visual continuity. It also sports a dual 8-pin power delivery circuit - beefier than Intel's own take on the Arc A770, which we've just unboxed.

Best-known for its pre-constructed desktops, laptops, and monitors, Acer is now seemingly looking to dip its toes into the discrete GPU market. Unfortunately, Acer's announcement is bereft of details; there's only a render of the card and no actual specifications on whether the company will be offering the 8 GB version Arc A770, its 16 GB cousin, or both. It's also unknown whether the company is planning on extending its reach towards other Arc models or even other manufacturers such as AMD and NVIDIA, but it does make sense that it's forging ahead with a single manufacturer first.
