Adobe Premiere Pro to Get More GPU Acceleration and Optimization

Adobe is releasing an important feature update to Premiere Pro later this week, which promises to introduce significant improvements to video encoding performance by better leveraging GPU acceleration. The new version 14.2 of Premiere Pro will leverage NVENC to boost encoding by over 5 times compared to CPU. The suite leveraged shaders to accelerate video effects and improving export times, but until now hadn't leveraged NVIDIA's hardware encoder. For machines with GeForce and Quadro GPUs, this means improved export times on H.264, H.265, and HEVC codecs. Without getting into specifics, Adobe mentioned that Premiere Pro will tap into video hardware acceleration capabilities of AMD Radeon GPUs, too.

Update 07:55 UTC: Adobe posted release notes of the latest version 14.2 of Premiere Pro. The list of system requirements needed for hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC encoding appears vague beyond pointing out that you need a compatible graphics solution. The list of compatible GPUs includes a wide selection of NVIDIA GPUs covering both its professional Quadro and consumer GeForce brands. On the AMD front, however, only the professional Radeon Pro SKUs are listed, and no consumer Radeon RX series SKUs.

NVIDIA "Ampere" Designed for both HPC and GeForce/Quadro

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in a pre-GTC press briefing stressed that the upcoming "Ampere" graphics architecture will spread across both the company's compute-accelerator and commercial graphics product lines. The architecture makes its debut later today with the Tesla A100 HPC processor for breakthrough AI acceleration. It's unlikely that any GeForce products will be formally announced this month, with rumors pointing to a GeForce "Ampere" product launch at a gaming-focused event in September, close to "Cyberpunk 2077" launch.

It was earlier believed that NVIDIA had forked its breadwinning IP into two lines, one focused on headless scalar compute, and the other on graphics products through the company's GeForce and Quadro product lines. To that effect, its "Volta" architecture focused on scalar-compute (with the exception of the forgotten TITAN V); and the "Turing" architecture focused solely on GeForce and Quadro. It was then believed that "Ampere" will focus on compute, and the so-called "Hopper" would be this generation's graphics-focused architecture. We now know that won't be the case. NVIDIA Announces Financial Results for Second Quarter Fiscal 2020

NVIDIA today reported revenue for the second quarter ended July 28, 2019, of $2.58 billion compared with $3.12 billion a year earlier and $2.22 billion in the previous quarter. GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $0.90, compared with $1.76 a year ago and $0.64 in the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $1.24 compared with $1.94 a year earlier and $0.88 in the previous quarter.

"We achieved sequential growth across our platforms," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "Real-time ray tracing is the most important graphics innovation in a decade. Adoption has reached a tipping point, with NVIDIA RTX leading the way. "NVIDIA accelerated computing momentum continues to build as the industry races to enable the next frontier in artificial intelligence, conversational AI, as well as autonomous systems like self-driving vehicles and delivery robots," he said.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z v2.24.0 Released

TechPowerUp today released the latest version of GPU-Z, the popular graphics subsystem information, monitoring, and diagnostic utility. The new version 2.24.0 fixes a compatibility issue with Windows Vista in which the digital signature of the application's kernel-mode driver would spring up an error. We've also taken the opportunity to do some touch-ups, such as adding the PCI vendor ID for Dataland, some typos in the Vulkan Advanced information page; and support for a handful GPUs that include NVIDIA GeForce 305M, Quadro P620, and the Intel HD Graphics iGPU inside the Xeon E3-1265L V2. NVIDIA Issues Warning to Upgrade Drivers Due to Security Patches

NVIDIA has found a total of five security vulnerabilities with its Windows drivers for GeForce, Quadro and Tesla lineup of graphics cards. These new security risks are labeled as very dangerous and have the potential to cause local code execution, denial of service, or escalation of privileges, unless the system is updated. Users are advised to update their Windows drivers as soon as possible in order to stay secure and avoid all of these vulnerabilities, so be sure to check your drivers for latest version. Exploits are only accessible on Windows based OSes, starting from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

However, one fact that's reassuring is that in order to exploit a system, attacker must have local access to the machine that is running NVIDIA GPU, as remote exploit can not happen. Bellow are the tables provided by NVIDIA that show type of exploit along with rating it carries and which driver versions are affected. There are no mitigations for this exploit, as driver update is the only available solution to secure the system.

NVIDIA Releases Studio Driver 431.70 WHQL

NVIDIA today updated its GeForce Studio Driver to version 431.70 WHQL. NVIDIA had in March 2019 forked its client-segment GPU drivers to two, the regular GeForce "Game Ready" drivers targeting gamers and regular desktop users; and the special Studio Drivers targeting content creators who don't necessarily own expensive Quadro hardware but could do with certain professional features and application support. These drivers still won't turn your GeForce to Quadro, and won't give GeForce "certifications" for major 3D and content-creation applications, but will ensure compatibility by making the most of existing hardware features of GeForce or TITAN GPUs.

Version 431.70 adds support for GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, RTX 2070 SUPER, and RTX 2060 SUPER GPUs; expands the list of G-SYNC compatible monitors; and adds support for new content creation applications, namely Magix VEGAS Pro v17, Autodesk Arnold, Allegorithmic Substance Painter 2019.2, Blender 2.80, Cinema 4D R21, and Otoy Octane Render 2019.2. The drivers also enable 30-bit color (not to be confused with 10-bit color) on GeForce and TITAN GPUs. This needed Quadro GPUs until now. Grab the driver from the link below.

AMD Clarifies Radeon VII Pro Driver Support: No WS Certifications

Monday we were treated to news we felt was too good to be true at the back of our minds, that AMD is adding a host of Radeon Pro features to its flagship client-segment Radeon VII graphics card, by enabling support in its upcoming Pro 19.Q1 drivers. The company today released a clarification on the matter, and explained that while it's true that some Radeon Pro features are being enabled, such as enterprise-grade security, standard feature-set, and Pro-grade driver stability; key features such as 3D application certifications and optimizations are being excluded. These would be the features you pay top-Dollar to buy Radeon Pro or competing NVIDIA Quadro products for. The drivers also lack enterprise remote workstation features.

AMD clarified the reasoning behind this partial Radeon Pro driver support that's along the lines of its Radeon Pro Vega Frontier Edition feature-set: to enable businesses to use both Radeon Pro and client-segment Radeon VII products across their infrastructure. They could, in theory, have a workstation set up with a Radeon Pro graphics card to satisfy application certification, and render some of their workloads on a Radeon VII installed on the same machine.

MSI Shows Off GS75 Stealth and GE75 Raider Among Other Notebooks at CES 2019

After checking out MSI's newest graphics cards, we took a closer look at their laptops including the 17.3-inch GS75 Stealth which just so happens to be their most potent ultra-thin gaming notebook. It comes packing up to an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q to deliver the best possible gaming performance. In order to facilitate that MSI also used a 144 Hz 1080p display. The system also supports up to 32 GB of DDR4-2666 memory and has 2x NVMe M.2 / SATA-SSD combo slots and 1x NVMe M.2 SSD slot. It also features MSI's Cooler Boost Trinity+ technology which improves cooling for maximum performance. Meanwhile, the touchpad has a 35% larger surface area features a glass surface, and it also has support for multi-touch gestures. The keyboard is by SteelSeries and offers per-key RGB illumination, while sound is handled by Dynaudio using a passive radiator design. All in all, it has some beefy specifications for an ultra-thin to say the least.

ASUS Rolls Out "Gaming Station" GS50

ASUS announced the Gaming Station GS50, which its product managers refer to as a "gaming station," so someone at big oil can blow steam off on Battlefield after a long day's work exploring shale (at least that's a use-case we can imagine). The GS50 is powered by an Intel Xeon W-2155 processor, which is a 10-core/20-thread chip clocked at 3.30 GHz to 4.50 GHz (turbo), packing 13.75 MB of L3 cache. This processor is essentially a Core i9-7900X with Xeon-exclusive features such as up to 512 GB ECC memory support, MPX, TXT, Boot Guard, etc. ASUS is offering RDIMM memory options all the way up to 512 GB.

Adding to its "gaming" credentials is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 graphics. Quadro RTX series is not even provided as an option. For storage, you get a 512 GB M.2-2280 SATA 6 Gbps SSD, and a 3 TB HDD for recovery and cold storage. Among the storage expansion options are additional M.2-NVMe slots, five more SATA ports, and a U.2 port. Networking includes two 1 GbE interfaces pulled by two Intel "server class" Ethernet controllers. A 700W 80 Plus Gold-certified PSU powers the machine. ASUS didn't reveal pricing.

NVIDIA Announces Quadro RTX 4000 Graphics Card

NVIDIA today introduced the Quadro RTX 4000 graphics card - the company's first midrange professional GPU powered by the NVIDIA Turing architecture and the NVIDIA RTX platform. Unveiled at the annual Autodesk University Conference in Las Vegas, the Quadro RTX 4000 puts real-time ray tracing within reach of a wider range of developers, designers and artists worldwide.

Professionals from the manufacturing, architecture, engineering and media creation industries witnessed a seismic shift in computer graphics with the launch of Turing in August. The field's greatest leap since the invention of the CUDA GPU in 2006, Turing features new RT Cores to accelerate ray tracing and next-gen Tensor Cores for AI inferencing which, together for the first time, make real-time ray tracing possible.

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 and RTX 5000 Up for Pre-Order, Full TU102 at $6,300

NVIDIA opened up its "Turing" based Quadro RTX 6000 and RTX 5000 graphics cards up for pre-order on its website. The RTX 6000 is priced at USD $6,300, and a quantity limitation of 5 per customer is in place. The RTX 5000, on the other hand, is priced at $2,300, and is out of stock at the time of this writing. The RTX 6000 maxes out the TU102 silicon with 4,608 CUDA cores, 576 Tensor cores, 72 RT cores, and is armed with 24 GB of GDDR6 memory, across the chip's full 384-bit memory bus width, making it the cheapest graphics card that maxes out the silicon, unless NVIDIA comes up with a "TITAN X Turing." The Quadro series comes with an enterprise feature-set and certifications for major content-creation applications not available on the GeForce series.

The Quadro RTX 5000, on the other hand, maxes out the TU104 silicon with 3,072 CUDA cores, 384 Tensor cores, 48 RT cores, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across the chip's 256-bit wide memory interface. The $10,000 RTX 8000, which isn't open to pre-orders yet, arms the TU102 with a whopping 48 GB of memory, and higher clocks than the RTX 6000. NVIDIA debuted the "Turing" graphics architecture with the Quadro RTX series a week before the new GeForce RTX 20-series.
