Super Talent Now Shipping UltraDrive Family of SSDs

Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced that it is now shipping both the UltraDrive ME and UltraDrive LE families of Solid State Drives (SSDs).

Corsair 128GB SSD Shows up on UK Online Retailer

With no official word from Corsair and no leaked information before now, a 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD) has appeared on the UK Online Retailer Scan.co.uk. SanDisk Unleashes World’s Fastest MLC Solid-State Drive Family

SanDisk Corporation today also unveiled its third-generation family of solid-state drives (SSDs). Using multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory technology, SanDisk's G3 Series establishes new benchmarks in performance and price-performance leadership in the SSD industry. Designed as drop-in replacements for hard-disk drives (HDDs) in notebook PCs, the initial members in the SanDisk G3 family are SSD C25-G3 and SSD C18-G3 in the standard 2.5" and 1.8" form factors, respectively, each available with a SATA-II interface. Available in capacities of 60, 120 and 240GB, the unit MSRPs are $149, $249 and $499, respectively.

Imation Introduces M-Class and S-Class Solid State Drives

Joining the string of product launches that coincide with the 2009 CES event, is Imation's solid state drive (SSD) offerings under two distinct product classes: M-Class and S-Class. Both these product lines are available in the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors and use the standard SATA interfaces. While the M-Class SSDs use SATA-150, the S-Class use SATA-300 interface. They come in unformatted capacities of 32, 64 and 128 GB.

These drives have company-rated data transfer speeds of around 150 MB/s (read) and 90 MB/s (write) for the M-Class, and 130 MB/s (read) and 120 MB/s (write) for the S-Class. Apart from these drives, Imation also announced "upgrade kits" that include necessary tools to migrate an image of the older hard drive to these newer ones, saving the task of reinstalling software. The M-Class SSDs hit the stores in February with prices of $179.99 and above, while the S-Class series are slated for March.

SanDisk Intros Second Generation pSSD Solid State Drives for Netbooks

SanDisk Corporation today unveiled its next-generation of flash memory-based solid-state drives for adoption in various netbooks. Dubbed SanDisk pSSD-P2 and SanDisk pSSD-S2, the new flash drives feature SATA interface and come in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64-gigabytes. They are made using SanDisk's reliable 43-nanometer Multi-Level Cell (MLC) flash memory. SanDisk also claims that its new pSSDs are going to be very cheap when released, but unfortunately there's no exact information to confirm their words.
"Netbooks represent the fastest growing PC segment in 2009 and 2010 yet widespread adoption of SSDs in netbooks has been limited by speed, capacity and cost constraints," said Rich Heye, senior vice president and general manager, Solid-State Drives (SSD), SanDisk. "With the significant improvements in performance, capacity and low pricing, these SSDs are a perfect fit for the exploding netbook market."
SanDisk's second generation pSSD drives are slated to be available in February 2009.

PQI to Launch More Flash Based Storage Devices at CES 2009

Besides the USB 3.0 demonstration, visitors attending the 2009 CES at Las Vegas may also take a look at PQI's booth, where the company will have on display their full range of Solid State Drives, USB Flash Drives (UFD), Memory Modules and Flash Memory Cards. Among these will be four brand new and never seen before products - 1.8-inch microSATA SSD S518, Express Card SSD S520, 2.5-inch SATAⅡ SSD S525 and e-SATA Combo Card S530. The 32GB Express Card SSD S520 utilizes PCMCIA form factor that supports both USB2 and PCI Express connectivity. Users have the option of using it as a portable USB flash drive or to extend their PC / laptop storage capacity. The 64GB e-SATA Combo Card S530 has an e-SATA connection interface and reaches a maximum read speed of 90MB/Sec. Finally, both PQI's 1.8-inch microSATA SSD S518 and 2.5-inch SATAⅡ SSD S525 are available with a maximum capacity of 128GB. RiData Releases 233x/300x CF Cards and SATA HDD Converter Kit

Advanced Media, Inc., is a manufacturer and marketer of the Ridata brand of electronic storage products, and digital accessories. The company is pleased to announce Ridata 233x Lightning Series CompactFlash cards plus a SATA Converter RAID 1. Compatible Ridata CF cards range in capacity from 512MB to 32GB. The adapter allows a CF card to function as a Solid State Drive (SSD). In the case of a hard drive failure, the CF card via the converter appears as an ordinary hard drive to any OS and can be configured as a boot device.

"Many of our portable device customers would like to try an SSD without the bigger price tag. Our industrial customers face the problem of waiting for long hard disk drive (HDD) rebuilds that may cause over heating issues. By using our CF card and SATA converter, users can hot swap the HDD with the card and converter saving storage rebuild time with low temperatures and high transfer speeds," commented Harvey Liu, president of Advanced Media, Inc.

Intel Starts Shipping 160GB X25-M SATA Solid State Drives

Intel is expanding its award-winning Intel X25-M and X18-M SATA Solid-State Drive (SSD) family by announcing the production release of a 160 gigabyte (GB) capacity drive in a 2.5-inch form factor. The product is shipping now, and a 1.8-inch 160GB version will begin shipping next month. There's one more thing worth mentioning for these multi-level cell-based drives - their read and write speeds - and they are sustained read of 250MB/sec and 80MB/sec write. Samsung Now Producing 256GB Solid State Drives

Intel Solid State Drives Price Cuts, New Models Revealed

In addition to the new LGA 775 processors, Intel is preparing price cuts for its solid state drives. Intel's super fast 2.5-inch 80GB multi-level cell (MLC) X25-M SSDs - and its 80GB 1.8-inch X18-M counterpart - will drop from $600 to $525 on November 30th. On the very same day Intel will also introduce its new single-level cell (SLC) high-performance 32GB X25-E SSD for $700. A month later on December 28th, the price of this drive will already be dropped to $575. In the first half of 2009, Intel will be migrating to higher density, releasing 160GB variants of the X25-M/X18-M MLC SSDs priced at $990, and 64GB versions of the high-performance X25-E SLC SSDs priced again at $990.

OCZ Technology Launches New Low-cost Core Series Solid State Drives

Yesterday, OCZ silently released new solid state drives, part of the company's Solid series line-up. There's still no sign of a press release, but the drives are already starting to appear at some etailers. These are not the Core V3 SSDs we covered here two days ago, but new budget solid state drives. The new value-minded SSDs come in a 2.5-inch form factor, have a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, one mini USB port and a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 1.5 million hours. The SSDs do claim 155MB/s read and 90MB/s write speeds and are shock resistant. OCZ's new Solid SSDs are available in 30GB (OCZSSD2-1SLD30G), 60GB (OCZSSD2-1SLD60G) and 120GB (OCZSSD2-1SLD120G) models, priced at $89, $159 and $299 respectively. All drives have a two year warranty.

Seagate Invests $100 Million in a New SSD Line-up

Hard drive king Seagate officially confirmed today that it is investing as much as $100 million in a very own line-up of Solid State Drives. Seagate's CEO, Bill Watkins said:
We'd love to have an SSD range, that's why we're investing (as much as $100m), as there are a lot of things that we like about them. But there are also some problems.
The new line-up Seagate is building will try to overcome some of the problems current SSDs have. At present we're aware of SLC (single layer chip) and MLC (multiple layer chip) SSDs, and we know that the latter is cheaper but has reliability issues. Seagate will try to create a new technology that combines both single-layer cell (SLC) and multi-layer cell (MLC) tech, making better, faster and cheaper SSDs, the drives we all want.
Seagate's senior vice president of global marketing Pat King also revealed that the company is working on a network attached storage solution for the home. Unfortunately, that's all the information we have. Hopefully this new line-up will be a big step in the SSD industry.

SanDisk Introduces Extreme FFS, Promises Faster Solid State Drives Next Year

SanDisk Corporation today unveiled an advanced flash file system for solid-state drives (SSDs) that yields dramatic improvement in performance and reliability for computing applications. Called ExtremeFFS, this next-generation patented flash management system - which has the potential to accelerate random write speeds by up to 100 times over existing systems - will ship in SanDisk products during 2009. Speaking in Los Angeles at WinHEC 2008, Rich Heye, senior vice president and general manager for SanDisk's Solid-State Drive (SSD) Business Unit, presented ExtremeFFS along with two metrics - vRPM and LDE - that can help end-users evaluate SSDs. vRPM enables comparisons in performance between an SSD and a hard disk drive (HDD) or another SSD, and LDE calculates the lifespan of a solid-state drive.

OCZ Technology Readies Brand New Core V3 Solid State Drives

During the DIY PC Expo 2008 in Japan, OCZ Technology unveiled that it will be updating its Core series of solid state drives. The third generation MLC (multi-level cell) NAND-based Core V3 models will bring higher read and write speeds that exceed 230MB/s read and 160MB/s write speeds, a lot more than the 170MB/s (read) and 98MB/s (write) offered by today's Core V2 SSDs. The new Core V3 SSDs will come in a 2.5-inch form factor, and will boast a SATA 3.0G Gbit/s interface. Most likely OCZ will release models that range from 32GB to 256GB in capacity. The rest of the details are still unknown.
