Elecom Unveils New Projection Keyboard

Yesteryears' tradeshow queen, projection keyboards are seeping into the markets. Elecom is one of those propagating it. The Japanese company unveiled TK-PBL042BK, a wireless projection keyboard. All it requires is a flat surface (such as a desk top), and for the host to support Bluetooth or USB interfaces. The keyboard follows a host interface model that's natively supported by iOS and Android.

With PCs, it works over common Bluetooth HID driver model. Apart from Bluetooth, the device can also connect to a host over USB, and work as a USB HID keyboard, while charging its battery. The device projects a keyboard onto a flat surface, and tracks your fingers pressing against the projected buttons. Measuring 38.0 x 29.0 x 75.0 mm, it weighs 77 g without battery. The rechargeable battery supports up to two hours of continuous use. Slated for early-April, the TK-PBL042BK from Elecom is priced at 28,875 JPY (US $352).

ORICO Unveils 95x8RUS3 4-bay and 5-bay USB 3.0 RAID Boxes

ORICO unveiled the 9548RUS3 (4-bay) and 9558RUS3 (5-bay) external RAID enclosures. Built with front-loading 3.5-inch SATA HDD caddies, these enclosures can be set to run the installed HDDs in a variety of RAID modes (0/1/3/5/10) apart from standalone. The inbuilt RAID controller supports physical drives with capacities up to 3 TB only, although the RAID volumes can be bigger. The enclosures then connect to a host over USB 3.0 SuperSpeed and eSATA. Both models are available in black and silver color options, the main unit draws power from an external power brick, and is ventilated using two 60 mm fans. The panels are made of aluminum. ORICO did not give out pricing/availability information.

Unitcom Unveils 14-inch First Gen. Ultrabook

Japanese BTO notebook maker Unitcom is ready with the LesanceNB S3431/L first-generation Ultrabook for launch on the 24th of March, later this month. This 14-inch Ultrabook is priced at 59,980 JPY (US $730). It is driven by Intel Core i5-2467M (1.60 GHz), with 4 GB dual-channel DDR3 memory, 64 GB SSD holding the OS and programs, 500 GB HDD for documents and storage, and Intel integrated graphics. The 14-inch screen provides 1366x768 pixels resolution. Other features include multi-format card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, WiFi b/g/n, gigabit Ethernet, 1.3 megapixel webcam, and 5 hours rated battery-life on full charge. Measuring 333 x 230 x 19 mm, the S3431/L weighs 1.64 kg.

Buffalo Unveils BSMBLW Series Glass-Safe Laser Mice

Buffalo unveiled three new lines of mice, the BSMBLW01 (5-button wireless), BSMBLW02 (3-button wireless) and BSMBLU02 (3-button wired), which feature laser trackers that work on glass and other polished surfaces. The BSMBLW01 features a tracking resolution of up to 1,650 dpi. It measures 58 x 95 x 37 mm (WxDxH), weighing 60 g (without batteries). It requires two AAA-size batteries, and uses a 2.4 GHz radio band micro-receiver. The BSMBLW02 is a 3-button design, with a 1,600 dpi sensor. It measures 66 x 97 x 40 mm, weighing 59 g. Like the BSMBLW01, it needs two AAA-batteries, and packs a micro-receiver. Lastly, there's the BSMBLU02, which is essentially a USB-wired variant of the BSMBLW02, which doesn't needs batteries, and hence weighs 59 g. The BSMBLW01, BSMBLW02, and BSMBLU02, are priced at 6,300 JPY (US $76.6), 5,617 JPY (US $68.3), and 4,200 JPY (US $51), respectively. They are pictured in the same order, below.

Buffalo Also Readies a New Portable Blu-ray Writer

In addition to the 14x flagship mentioned earlier, Buffalo is also readying the release of another Blu-ray writer, a portable model known as BRXL-CSPI6U2-BK. Set for a late March arrival, the new, external drive measures 133 x 15 x 133 mm, it weights 240 grams, it features USB connectivity (dual cables are available), and offers write speeds of up to 6x for BD-R SL/DL, 4x for BDXL, 2x for BD-RE/BDXL RE, 8x for DVD-R/+R/+RW, 6x for DVD-R/+R DL/-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, 24x for CD-R and 16x for CD-RW.

The BRXL-CSPI6U2-BK will cost $258.

Kingston DataTraveler Elite 3.0 Pictured

Kingston showed off the DataTraveler Elite 3.0, a mainstream USB 3.0 flash drive, at CeBIT. Available in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB capacity options, these drives feature a capless "slide out" form-factor, where the USB 3.0 type-A connector slides out of the main body. Kingston's booth had a PC with CrystalDiskMark performance results of the three models. The 16 GB and 32 GB models scored about 80 MB/s reads with 39.5 MB/s writes; while the 64 GB model scored 85 MB/s reads with 65 MB/s writes.

Elecom Announces a New Line of Powered-USB Hubs

Japanese company Elecom unveiled a new line of auxiliary-powered USB hubs that expand USB connectivity on notebooks, and help power USB-charged devices such as smartphones and tablets. The U2H-MB401 is a 3-port USB 2.0 hub, which draws auxiliary DC power to charge connected devices, it is priced at 2,205 JPY. The U2HS-MB01-4B is a 4-port host-powered hub, and the U2HS-MB01-4S is a auxiliary-powered one, they are priced at 1,470 JPY and 2,940 JPY. Then there's the U2H-SMC4BPN, which is host-powered, and features a micro-SDHC card slot. The three hubs are further available in black, white, and pink color options.

MSI Z77A-G45 Motherboard Pictured

The Z77A-G45 is going to be one of the more affordable socket LGA1155 motherboards based on the Intel Z77 chipset, by MSI. The Z77A series from MSI starts with high end Z77A-GD80, Z77A-GD65, and Z77A-GD55. eTeknix scored pictures of the Z77A-G45. The G45 uses a simple 6-phase VRM to power the LGA1155 CPU. It doesn't cheap out on cooling for the MOSFETs. The socket is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots, supporting dual-channel DDR3 memory.

The expansion slot area is identical to that of all the other Z77A series motherboards, consisting of two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (x8/x8 when both are populated), one PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (electrical x4), and four PCI-Express 2.0 x1. MSI gave legacy PCI the boot. Strangely enough, this board features NVIDIA SLI support (something unusual for a "G45" model, as "D" in the model name signifies SLI support. The motherboard doesn't appear to use third-party storage or USB 3.0 controllers. All six SATA ports are internal, wired to the Z77 PCH, and consist of two SATA 6 Gb/s, and four SATA 3 Gb/s. All four USB 3.0 ports (two on the rear-panel, two via front-panel header) are wired to the PCH.

Awww, just awww. Look at these colorful kidney-bean shaped wireless mice from Elecom. They're sure to go well with equally colorful netbooks such as Aspire One from Acer. The M-BM1DL "Baby Beans" from Elecom measure just 35.5 x 54.0 x 23.0 mm (WxDxH), weighing 20 g, but that doesn't stop them from packing 1,200 DPI laser sensors. Guinness Records certified these as the smallest mice. The USB micro-receiver, which operates in the 2.4 GHz radio band can be slotted into the mouse for carrying it around. The mouse packs a tiny rechargeable battery, that can be charged using a bundled cable. Pricing and availability info is awaited.

Plantronics' GameCom 780 Gaming Headset Goes On Sale

Announced early this year, at CES 2012, Plantronics' GameCom 780 Gaming Headset has now become available for purchase in Europe. TRENDNet Intros TU-S9 USB to Serial Converter

With legacy interfaces such as RS-232 serial obsolete and clearly phased out of PC motherboard standards, those still needing the interface, such as for connecting MODEMs, telecom equipment, robotics, etc., are finding themselves in need of devices such as the TRENDNet TU-S9. Simply put, this is an adapter cable with a USB connector on one side, and a RS-232 9-pin male connector on the other. The cable between the two is about 7 cm long. Operating systems such as Windows 7-thru-98; and Mac OS X 10.1-thru-10.6 are supported. The TU-S9 from TRENDNet is priced at US $12.99.

Elecom Intros MS-P05U Series USB Stereo Speakers

Elecom introduced the MS-P05U series USB stereo speakers for those on the move. Measuring 64 x 78 x 103 mm (WxDxH) each, these speakers rely completely on a single USB connection for power and host connectivity, and pack a USB audio DAC. The speakers deliver 2.1W of power (1.05W each). Their domes are inclined a little upwards, to prevent sound distortion caused as sound bounces off the surface of your desk. The speakers have a frequency response range of 50-18,000 Hz, and 8Ω impedance. The cable extends 1.2 meters. The MS-P05U is available in three color options, black (MS-P05UBK), white (MS-P05UWH), and pink (MS-P05UPN). Slated for mid-March, and backed by a 6 month warranty, the MS-P05U is priced at 3,360 JPY (US $41.7).

ORICO Unveils 4-port SATA Hub

ORICO unveiled a unique 4-port SATA hub that's compact and styled like a USB hub. The 6566-S4 from ORICO takes in one eSATA connection, that it port-multiplies to four. The hub takes in an auxiliary DC power input, which it uses to power its port-multiplier logic. Connected devices still need their own power sources, as these ports are not power-eSATA. The hub also has link/activity LEDs for each downstream port. Downstream SATA devices are hot-swappable. ORICO did not reveal pricing or availability information.
