Intel 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" Desktop Processors Launched: +15% ST, +41% MT Uplift

Intel today launched its 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" desktop processors, and companion 700-series motherboard chipset. These processors are built in the same LGA1700 package as the previous generation "Alder Lake," and are backwards-compatible with 600-series chipset motherboards through a BIOS update. Likewise, 700-series chipset motherboards support older "Alder Lake" processors. With the new 13th Gen Core, Intel is broadly promising an up to 15% uplift in single-threaded performance, which has a bigger bearing on gaming performance; and an up to 41% multi-threaded performance uplift; over the previous-generation, when comparing the top Core i9-13900K with its predecessor, the i9-12900K. Intel also claims to have outclassed the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X in multi-threaded performance, and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in gaming performance.

Intel's performance claims are backed by some impressive hardware changes despite the company sticking with the same Intel 7 (10 nm Enhanced SuperFin) foundry node as "Alder Lake." To begin with, the single-thread performance uplift comes from the new "Raptor Cove" performance-core, which promises an IPC uplift over the previous-generation "Golden Cove," comes with more dedicated L2 cache of 2 MB per core (compared to 1.25 MB per core in the previous-generation); and significantly higher clock-speeds, going all the way up to 5.80 GHz. "Raptor Lake" has up to 8 P-cores, but the company has put in a lot of work in improving the contribution of E-cores to the processor's overall multi-threaded performance uplift. This is achieved by doubling the E-core count to 16. These are the same "Gracemont" E-cores as previous-generation, but Intel has doubled the L2 cache that's shared in a 4-core Gracemont cluster, from 2 MB per cluster to 4 MB. There are upgrades to even the hardware prefetchers of these cores.

Intel Previews Arc A750 Graphics Card Performance

Intel has decided to share some more details on its upcoming Arc A750 graphics card, the one and same that appeared briefly in a Gamer Nexus video just the other day. The exact product being previewed is the Intel Arc A750 Limited Edition graphics card, but the company didn't reveal any specifications of the card in the video it posted. What is revealed, is that the card will outperform a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 card at 1440p in the five titles that Intel provided performance indications and average frame rates for. The five games are F1 2021, Cyberpunk 2077, Control, Borderlands 3 and Fortnite, so in other words, mostly quite demanding games with F1 2021 and Fortnite being the exceptions.

The only game we get any kind of insight into the actual performance of in the video, is Cyberpunk 2077, where Ryan Shrout details the game settings and the actual frame rate. At 2560 x 1440, using high settings, the Arc A750 delivers 60.79 FPS, with a low of 50.54 FPS and a max of 77.92 FPS. Intel claims this is 1.17 times the performance of an EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 XC Gaming 12G graphics card. At least Intel didn't try to pull a fast one, as the company provided average frame rates for all the other games tested as well, not just how many times faster the Intel card was and you can see those results below. The test system consisted of an Intel Core i9-12900K fitted to an ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero board, 32 GB of 4800 MHz DDR5 memory and a Corsair MP600 Pro XT 4 TB NVMe SSD, as well as Windows 11 Pro. According to the video, the Arc graphics cards should launch "this summer" and Intel will be releasing more details between now and the launch.

Puget Systems Publishes Windows 11 Content Creation Benchmarks

The benchmarks were primarily taken from the PugetBench suite of tests with each test run multiple times.

The video editing tests were conducted using Premiere Pro, After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve where Premiere Pro saw a small performance improvement in Windows 10 while the other programs performed similarly on both operating systems. The photo editing tests used Photoshop, and Lightroom Classic with average performance equal across Windows 10 and 11. The CPU rendering benchmarks featured Cinebench, V-Ray, and Blender where once again the results were all within the margin of error. The GPU rendering tests using Octane, V-Ray, and Blender showed some differences with V-Ray and Blender both performing best in Windows 11. The final section was Game Development in Unreal Engine where a small advantage could be had by using Windows 11.

Windows Defender can Significantly Impact Intel CPU Performance, We have the Fix

Kevin Glynn, aka "Uncle Webb," our associate software author behind popular utilities such as ThrottleStop and RealTemp, developed a new utility named Counter Control, which lets you monitor and log the performance counters of Intel Core processors since 2008 (Core "Nehalem"). During development for ThrottleStop, Kevin discovered a fascinating bug with Windows Defender, the built-in security software of Windows, which causes significantly higher performance impact on the processor than it should normally have. Of course a security software is bound to have some (small) performance impact during real-time protection, but this is much bigger.

The first sign that something is happening is that HWiNFO will be reporting a reduced "Effective Clock" speed when the CPU is fully loaded. A much bigger problem is that when Defender is affected by the bug, performance of your machine will be significantly reduced. For example, a Core i9-10850K running at 5.00 GHz all-core loses 1000 Cinebench points (or 6%). Such a performance loss has been reported by owners of Intel Core 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Gen, both desktop and mobile CPUs, on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. AMD processors are not affected.

AMD Significantly Improves OpenGL Performance in Windows with Upcoming 22H2 Driver

AMD for long has been perceived as lagging behind NVIDIA in OpenGL API graphics performance, as is evident in synthetic benchmarks that let you choose between various APIs, such as DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and OpenGL. It's being reported that the company has made a technical breakthrough that could significantly improve OpenGL application performance, bringing Radeon GPUs on par with GeForce in GL applications. Besides a few old games, several productivity applications continue to use OpenGL, such as Adobe Creative Cloud suite; as well as certain 3D renderers.

AMD is incorporating its OpenGL performance enhancement in drivers bound for Windows 11 22H2 (the major release bound for the second half of 2022). With this release, Microsoft is debuting WDDM 3.1, and AMD is already out with a Preview driver meant for Windows Insiders, bearing version 31.0.12000.20010. A quick Unigine Valley benchmark run with the OpenGL renderer reveals an incredible 49.5% increase in frame-rates, bringing the RX 6800 XT sample to performance-levels you'd expect from the RTX 3080. An identical 49.5% frame-rate increase was seen in Unigine Superposition.
