AMD Expands Desktop Ryzen 7000 "Zen 4" Processor Family with 65W Models

Besides the sensational Ryzen 7000X3D processors taking the fight to Intel's "Raptor Lake," AMD expanded the desktop Ryzen 7000 even downwards, with the introduction of three new 65 W processor SKUs that include boxed stock coolers. These include the Ryzen 5 7600 6-core/12-thread, the Ryzen 7 7700 8-core/16-thread, and the Ryzen 9 7900 12-core/24-thread. There's no 16-core part in this segment. These processors come with TDP values set at just 65 W, and PPT values in the range of 90 W to 120 W, and so their clock speeds and maximum boost speeds are lower compared to the 7000X series, with more aggressive power-management.

The 7600 boosts up to 5.10 GHz, and packs a 65 W-capable Wraith Stealth boxed cooling solution. The 7700 boosts up to 5.30 GHz, and the 7900 up to 5.40 GHz. Both the 7700 and 7900 include a Wraith Prism RGB cooler that can handle thermal loads of up to 140 W. The three chips are priced lower than their 7000X series cousins, with the 7600 going for USD $229, the 7700 at $329, and the 7900 at $429. The three chips are drop-in compatible with existing Socket AM5 motherboards without needing any BIOS update.

AMD Ryzen 7000 non-X Processor SKUs Confirmed with 65W TDP, Boxed Coolers

Ahead of their market debut early January, we got confirmation of the specifications of the three upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 series non-X processor SKUs. There will indeed only be three new SKUs, the 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 7600, the 8-core/16-thread Ryzen 7 7700, and the 12-core/24-thread Ryzen 9 7900; and no 16-core part. All three SKUs have their TDP rated at 65 W, which means that their PIB (processor in box) retail packages will include a stock cooling solution. The 7600 comes with a Wraith Stealth cooler that's capable of handling thermal loads of 65 W TDP processors at stock speeds; while the 7700 and 7900 will include a feature-packed Wraith Prism RGB cooler that's designed for 140 W TDP processors. Since Socket AM5 has cooler compatibility with AM4, AMD could simply be reusing the same coolers it packed with past-generation Ryzen processors.

The Ryzen 5 7600 comes with an MSRP of USD $229, clock speeds of up to 5.10 GHz boost, and targets the likes of the Intel Core i5-13600 or i5-12600. The $329 MSRP Ryzen 7 7700 ticks at speeds of up to 5.30 GHz boost, and is designed to compete with the Core i7-13700 or i7-12700. The Ryzen 9 7900 has an interesting price tag of $429 (MSRP), ticks at speeds of up to 5.40 GHz boost, and purportedly competes against the Core i9-13900 (non-K) and i9-12900. The three chips should be drop-in compatible with Socket AM5 motherboards being sold right now, likely with no need for a BIOS update. Although launch of these three SKUs in January is certain, the company might use the 2023 International CES keynote address by its CEO Dr Lisa Su to either tease or announce the Ryzen 7000X3D processors featuring 3D Vertical Cache memory, which is known to boost gaming performance.

AMD Ryzen PRO 4750G, PRO 4650G, and PRO 4350G Tested

Taiwan-based tech publication CoolPC.com.tw published one of the first comprehensive performance reviews of the recently announced AMD Ryzen PRO 4750G, PRO 4650G, and PRO 4350G Socket AM4 desktop processors based on the 7 nm "Renoir" silicon that combines up to 8 "Zen 2" GPU cores with a Radeon Vega iGPU that has up to 8 compute units (512 stream processors). In their testing, the processors were paired with an AMD Wraith Prism (125 W TDP capable) cooler, an ASUS ROG Strix B550-I Gaming motherboard, 2x 8 GB ADATA Spectrix D50 DDR4-3600 memory, and a Seagate FireCuda NVMe SSD.

The benchmark results are a fascinating mix. The top-dog Ryzen 7 4750G was found to be trading blows with the Core i7-10700K, the i7-10700, and AMD's own Ryzen 7 3700X, depending on the benchmark. In CPUMark 99 and Cinebench R20 nT, the PRO 4750G beats the i7-10700 and 3700X while practically matching the i7-10700K. It beats the i7-10700K at 7-Zip (de-compression) and HWBOT x265 video encoding benchmark. The story repeats with the 6-core/12-thread PRO 4650G beating the Core i5-10600K in some tests, and AMD's own Ryzen 5 3600X in quite a few tests. Ditto with the quad-core PRO 4350G pasting the previous generation Ryzen 3 3300G.

AMD Ryzen 9 PIB Package Pictured Up Close

AMD will differentiate its high-end Ryzen 9 desktop processor PIB (processor-in-a-box) retail package from that of the Ryzen 7 series with a more premium-looking box. Retailer PC Part Picker put up this picture of the Ryzen 9 box up-close, which also surfaced in E3-2019 presentations by AMD. The box is made of a thicker paperboard than the one the Ryzen 7 ships in, and features a 2-piece clamshell design, in which the upper part slides off. A faux carbon fiber texture dominates four faces of the top half, while the orange bottom one features a chrome insert with the "9" brand extension. The chip's PCI-Express gen 4.0 support earns prominent mention on the front face. The box contains the processor, an AMD Wraith Prism RGB cooling solution that's capable of handling thermal loads of up to 140W, aRGB cables for the cooler, a case badge, and some documentation. AMD will use this package for both the Ryzen 9 3900X and the flagship Ryzen 9 3950X.

The Ryzen 9 3900X will launch on 7th July, and will be AMD's top-dog until the 3950X comes along some time in September. The 3900X is a 12-core/24-thread processor clocked at 3.80 GHz with 4.60 GHz boost, designed to compete with the Core i9-9900K, and priced at USD $499. The 3950X is a 16-core/32-thread part that occupies a price-point way above, at USD $749. This chip ticks at 3.50 GHz with 4.70 GHz boost, despite its high core-count. Both chips have their TDP rated at 105W and include a Wraith Prism RGB cooling solution.

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 50th Anniversary Edition (Gold Edition) Isn't Just a Fancy Box

Canada Computers put out details of Ryzen 7 2700X 50th Anniversary Edition, officially known as the Ryzen 7 2700X Gold Edition, a commemorative SKU of the 2700X which has been pictured in our older story. At the time we reported that the new SKU commands a roughly $50 premium over the regular 2700X with a fancy new box design and a facsimile of AMD CEO Lisa Su's signature on the processor's IHS. Turns out, you get a whole lot more.

The Ryzen 7 2700X 50th Anniversary Edition includes not just the processor and a Wraith Prism RGB cooling solution, but also two AAA games: Tom Clancy's "The Division 2" Gold Edition, and "World War Z," a black cotton T-shirt with AMD 50 artwork on both sides, and a special case-badge with another signature of the CEO, besides the Ryzen 7 case-badge. The 2 Free Games offer is being extended to the entire Ryzen 2000 AM4 desktop processor family, and several Radeon GPU models, including Radeon VII, RX 500 series, and RX Vega series. The offer is subject to retailer participation.

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 50th Anniversary Edition Pictured Up Close: Signed by Lisa Su

Here are two of the first high-resolution pictures of the Ryzen 7 2700X 50th Anniversary Edition commemorative processor by AMD. It turns out we were right in guessing that it has special markings on the IHS (integrated heatspreader). Turns out, you get a facsimile of AMD CEO Lisa Su's signature, in addition to the AMD-50 logo above the main Ryzen logo. The box itself sees black replace gray as the primary color, and gold replacing auburn/orange in most places except the main Ryzen logo on the front face. A Wraith Prism RGB cooling solution is included, just like normal 2700X PIB packages. Early listings of the processor pinned its price around USD $340, a premium over the $295 price the Ryzen 7 2700X is typically going for.

AMD Readies 50th Anniversary Special Edition Ryzen 7 2700X

AMD is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a new commemorative special edition package of the Ryzen 7 2700X eight-core desktop processor. This package carries the PIB SKU number "YD270XBGAFA50." American online retailer ShopBLT had it listed for USD $340.95 before pulling the listing down and marking it "out of stock." The listing doesn't come with any pictures or details about the SKU, except mentioning that a Wraith Prism RGB CPU cooler is included (as it normally is for the 2700X PIB package).

Given that AMD hasn't changed the model number, we expect these processors to have the same specifications as regular Ryzen 7 2700X, but with some special packaging material, and perhaps some special laser engraving on the processor's IHS. AMD has used tin boxes in the past for its first FX-series processors, so the possibility of something similar cannot be ruled out. Since pricing of this SKU isn't significantly higher, we don't expect it to be of a higher bin (better overclockers) than regular 2700X chips. Based on the 12 nm "Pinnacle Ridge" silicon, the 2700X is an 8-core/16-thread processor derived from the "Zen+" architecture, with 3.70 GHz clock-speed, 4.30 GHz maximum Precision Boost, XFR, L2 cache of 512 KB per core, and 16 MB of shared L3 cache.

AMD Announces Availability of 2nd Generation Ryzen "Pinnacle Ridge" Processors

AMD today announced the global availability of its 2nd Generation Ryzen Desktop processors, starting with four models optimized for gamers, creators, and hardware enthusiasts: Ryzen 7 2700X, Ryzen 7 2700, Ryzen 5 2600X, and Ryzen 5 2600 processors. Using the world's first 12 nm process technology, these 2nd Gen Ryzen processors can offer up to 15% higher gaming performance than 1st Gen Ryzen processors, while delivering the highest multiprocessing performance you can get on a mainstream desktop PC, and enhanced capabilities including Precision Boost 2 and Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR 2), an included Wraith Cooler, unlocked performance accessed with the new Ryzen Master Utility, and more.

"Last year we started changing the PC industry with the introduction of our first wave of Ryzen processors - delivering more performance, features, and choice to our customers than before. Our 2nd Gen Ryzen CPUs continue this pursuit by raising the standards for enthusiast gamers and creators," said Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Business Group, AMD. "With this launch we're also demonstrating that we are just getting started, that we are committed to delivering a multi-generational roadmap of leadership high-performance processors that will drive innovation and competition into the industry for years to come."

AMD Ryzen 2000 Series "Pinnacle Ridge" Roadmap Leaked

Ahead of its launch product roadmap of AMD's next-generation performance-thru-enthusiast segment socket AM4 processors, was leaked to the web. It indicates that AMD could launch its next-generation Ryzen 2000-series "Pinnacle Ridge" processors with no more than four SKUs initially. These include the top-dog Ryzen 7 2700X, followed by the Ryzen 7 2700; the Ryzen 5 2600X, and the Ryzen 5 2600. Both Ryzen 7-series SKUs are 8-core/16-thread chips, while both Ryzen 5-series SKUs are 6-core/12-thread. There's also pricing for each of the four. The clock-speeds are also revealed below.

The Ryzen 7 2700X is being launched at a SEP of USD $369, and positioned against Intel Core i7-8700K. This is followed by the Ryzen 7 2700 being priced at $299, and fielded against Intel's multiplier-locked Core i7-8700. The Ryzen 5 2600X is, obviously, positioned against the Core i5-8600K, and priced at $249; while the Ryzen 5 2600 is priced at an attractive $199, and looks to disrupt several of Intel's Core i5 6-core SKUs around its price-point. Unlike many of Intel's SKUs, all AMD Ryzen chips feature unlocked multiplier, SMT, and a cooling solution. That's right, even the top-dog 2700X and 2600X include coolers, as opposed to their predecessors. The 2700X includes AMD's new Wraith Prism, while the 2600X and the other two SKUs include a Wraith Spire.

AMD Intros the Wraith Prism CPU Cooler

AMD unveiled its new-generation Wraith Prism CPU cooler, which will soon be available for purchase separately, launched alongside some of the higher models of its Ryzen 2000-series "Pinnacle Ridge" processors. The Wraith Prism is essentially a Wraith Max with RGB LED lighting. The cooler features two RGB LED diffusers embedded into its shroud, an outer ring at the mouth of the intake, and an inner ring along the bore of the intake framing the fan. You will be able to control the RGB LED lighting via Ryzen Master software, but it will also support software standards from motherboard vendors, such as ASUS Aura Sync, MSI Mystic Light, GIGABYTE RGB Fusion, BIOSTAR Vivid, etc. Under the shroud, the Wriath Prism features the same aluminium fin-stack heatsink as the Wriath Max. The cooler features fan-profiles for various CPU OC modes, which can be enabled via Ryzen Master. When it starts selling separately, the Wraith Prism could be priced around $49, a $5-ish premium over Wraith Max.
