BLON BL-A8 Prometheus In-Ear Monitors Review

Value and Conclusion

  • The BLON BL-A8 Prometheus is a recently released set of IEMs that comes in two color options and costs $79.99 from the Linsoul Audio web shop, for customers in the USA as of the date this is written. There is also a version with an in-line microphone in the cable for an additional $5, should you want to use these as a headset.
  • Good value for money
  • Very unique open-shell design
  • Deliberate, individually 3D printed acoustic chamber that helps shape the frequency response
  • Nice consistency between the two channels across the entire frequency range
  • In-ear response almost identical to the artificial ear audio coupler
  • Popping sub-bass and energetic bass response
  • Smooth transition from lows to the mids
  • Warm signature across the mids adds favorably to rock and pop genres
  • Two different types of silicone tips in multiple sizes are included
  • Lightweight and comfortable to use
  • Optional in-line mic for just $5 more
  • Mediocre listening experience outside of the lows and lower mids
  • Soundstage is alright at best
  • The open shell prone to get dirty over time
  • Aesthetics will be a deal breaker for many
If the two reviews of the Campfire Audio Satsuma and Honeydew showed anything, it's that a single driver and 3D printed shells are not to be dismissed easily. I am sure BLON's approach with the BL-A8 Prometheus has more to do with the unique aesthetics than the acoustic chamber, but it does allow a compact and streamlined driver setup surrounded by what is basically an open shell design. I may not know what Oppoty means, but I am sure everyone will agree that BLON certainly made an eye-catching set of IEMs.

That design is ultimately going to make or break it for your interests if in the market for some decent IEMs. BLON has made a name for itself with several inexpensive IEMs, with arguably its most popular product, the BL-03, coming in at around a third of the price of the BL-A8, which itself is also the least expensive IEM tested to date. There is a big jump from ~$30 to $80, however, and no doubt people are curious about whether these compared well to the BL-03. I do not have those here, but a quick look at some frequency response curves of the latter confirms a near-identical tuning in the lows and mids, where the BL-A8's strength also lies. It does appear that BLON has tightened things going through the upper mids and highs, however. Given I thought this was a weak point here, I can only imagine how the lower-budget BL-03 fares in that regard!

There is also the issue of consistency, but again, I have a single sample, so I can only speak for myself. Both channels tested near-identical, and performance on the ear mold was well within any perceived change relative to the more ideal test case. Other reports out there show larger sample-to-sample variation, as well as channel to channel variation. These are the sort of things that are compromised when there is a strict budget to work with and the new cable as well as the shell design take up a large chunk of it. The single 10 mm dynamic driver does a respectable job, especially in certain music genres listed above. With all said and done, I personally like the design and think the entire package is well worth considering for the money.
