CM Storm Pitch In-ear Gaming Headset Review

Performance

The Pitch is clearly aimed at gamers on the go—the TRRS termination would suggest that it is either for portable or phone gaming. It does, however, work for normal desktop gaming provided you have a mini-jack extension cord. The sound quality out of a normal sound card is alright, but you might have some issues dialing the volume back enough on modern high-gain sound cards. It sounds good with our JDSLabs O2+ODAC DAC/amp and is definitely not bottlenecked by the source. The same can be said when it is hooked up to a Samsung Galaxy S3 (International Edition).

The sound signature is quite neutral, with a hint of sibilance, which both burn-in and tip change can't seem to fix. The bass is good and extends low, similar to the Ozone Oxygen in-ears. The bass is a bit more textured, but there is a tad less of it, and the midrange is forward. Treble is quite aggressive, which is OK, but something you have to take into account if you are a bit treble shy.

The ear pieces are quiet comfortable once you get them in; however, their diameter is quite large at Ø 13 mm, which is a lot considering the driver is only Ø 10 mm.

For games, the most interesting aspect of their performance is the sound stage, and here, they do surprisingly well compared to the Oxygen headset. It is no match for more expensive headsets, but does fare quite well when compared to other headsets and in-ear headsets in its immediate price range.

For gaming on the go, sound quality is definitely up to the job, and noise attenuation is what you would expect it to be from a set of in-ears with dynamic drivers. The only slightly annoying issue is their larger than average housing. Its shape makes the shells hit the edge of your ears, which can cause both comfort and isolation issues if the in-ears move during use. It is definitely not easy to achieve a good fit with the Pitch in-ear headset, even in my slightly large ears.

Like the Ozone Oygen, the Pitch has an on-cable microphone that actually sounds totally alright. It is not as clean as a fully sized clip-on microphone, but is really alright for most scenarios. The button is a bit mushy and the split-line quality leaves something to be desired, and we encountered a trim piece that left the splitter during testing, but this issue should not crop up with the retail version.
