Value and Conclusion

  • The 2 GB kit of Crucial Tracer PC2-6400 can be yours for a very reasonable $149.44 USD (£75.00 GBP) from Crucial
  • Very high clock speed
  • Loads of overclocking headroom.
  • Good performance
  • Timings can be tightened a lot
  • Sticker on modules does not show the recommended frequency, timings or voltage.
  • Lots of excess heat is produced, which can impede overclocking.
The Ballistix Tracer PC2-6400 modules are another great example of the fine Crucial memory products. Not only do these modules look fantastic, both in and out of your computer, but they have more than enough overclocking potential to please even the most hardcore overclockers. This could be due to the fact that Crucial are a division of Micron, so they get the best of the Micron D9 chips to use in their DIMMS! This memory is the perfect way to add that extra 'bling' to your computer! The blue backlighting, coupled with the red/green activity LED's creates a fantastic visual effect.
In the performance testing we saw some incredible benchmark results. In one of the tests, I managed to achieve 10453 MB/s in Everest read! That would be more than enough bandwidth to supply even the most demanding graphics cards like the ATI HD 2900 XT or the NVIDIA 8800 GTX.
The Ballistix Tracer range has also been extended to PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) now, which would take you to even higher frequencies!
