Introduction

HEDD Audio Logo

HEDD Audio is a German speaker and headphones brand which was founded in 2015, albeit there's a lot more history behind the brand and its founders as mentioned in our review of the HEDDphone TWO—a truly innovative set of headphones using rarely seen air motion transformer (AMT) drivers that are seen more as speaker tweeters. The HEDDphone ONE came earlier, as the name suggests, and was the first to my knowledge to use full-range AMT drivers to handle not just the highs, which is incredibly difficult to do. There were some design challenges with the HEDDphone ONE, however, including limited headband sizing and massive drivers/ear cups resulting in a set of headphones that could double up as weights for neck and shoulder training. The HEDDphone TWO changed so much that it's almost a disservice calling it merely the second in this entry, going for a completely different design, a patented headband system, and new drivers too. I found the HEDDphone TWO worthy of a notable mention in our "Best of 2023" article as a result, and it remains a set I reach out to often for a reference sound.

The reference tonality of the HEDDphone TWO worked nicely for HEDD Audio's audience of studio professionals, be it mixing engineers or music mastering artists. It's a set that is easy enough to EQ as you mostly bump up the frequency response where you want it raised, given the relatively neutral sound out of the box. This also works for audiophiles who prefer an analytical sound signature, and certainly for those who use EQ too, yet there's no hiding away from the fact that most audiophiles still shy away from EQ for a variety of reasons that are beyond the scope of this article. HEDD Audio got feedback on the HEDDphone TWO that suggested there was scope for a different tonality which could be seen as more musical and popular among audiophiles thus, and this resulted in the HEDDphone TWO GT with the product name suggesting the newer model is perhaps easier on the ears for longer listening sessions too, if the car analogy holds true. The HEDDphone TWO GT is not just a re-tuning job, however, with HEDD also using updated drivers for even lower distortion, new cables, two different stock ear pad options that claim to offer the same sound allowing you to simply choose which ones you prefer for comfort, and ideally an even more positive response from the headphones market that HEDD Audio is still quite new to. Let's see how the new HEDDphone TWO GT performs in our review which begins with a look at the product specifications in the table below.
