Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset Review

Value & Conclusion »

Microphone Performance

The microphone of the Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset was tested by connecting it to the ASUS ROG STRIX X99 Gaming motherboard and the Creative Sound Blaster E1, a $50 external USB sound card. To review the microphone's sound and to compare it to other similar headsets, I used the Adam A7X speakers and Shure SRH840 headphones, both being studio monitors, connected to Audiolab's M-DAC, a high-quality digital-to-analog converter that functions as an external sound card when connected to a PC. The testing was done in Discord, TeamSpeak, Skype, and Audacity, and I also used Audacity to record sound from the microphone. The sound was recorded with microphone sensitivity set to 100% and was not post-processed or edited in any way.

For reference, this voice recording has been made with the Rode NT-USB, a high-quality studio microphone:

This is the sound recorded by using the detachable microphone that's supplied with Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset:

Now that's a seriously good microphone, one of the best I have had the chance of trying out in the $100 price bracket. It's bassy, clear, sufficiently loud and generally very pleasant to the ear. It doesn't pick up a lot of background noise either. Combine all that and you get a microphone that can be used even for more demanding tasks, such as Twitch streaming. In the process of preparing for this review, I ran into a couple of claims that the microphone is by far the weakest part of the Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset. Now that I tested it myself, I honestly have no idea what those reviewers are on about. This microphone can easily go neck to neck with some of the microphones that come with gaming headsets two or three times the price of the Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset. To hear what I mean, compare it to the microphones of the $200 HyperX Cloud Revolver S (reviewed here) or the $250 SteelSeries Arctis Pro + GameDAC (reviewed here):

Coming down in price, here's how the microphone of the Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset compares to some of its direct competitors:

The microphone of the Sennheiser GSP 301 is the only one I consider better than that of the Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset, which can be considered quite an achievement for Logitech.
