Installation

Installing the hard drives is simple, the TS-509 comes with five brackets. Each holds a single hard drive attached to the bracket using screws. The brackets then slide into the unit.
Apart from connecting the power and Ethernet cables this is the whole hardware installation. In fact, you can install the hard drives at any time since they are hot swappable. QNAP couldn't have made it any easier.


You can set up the unit in one of two ways. The first is the Finder, as could be done with all previously reviewed models.


Additionally you can do a basic setup via the front LCD panel, it's a bit less user friendly but can safe you a lot of time in certain situations. Additionally it can help you track problems when you can't locate the unit on the network. In practice, you will mainly use it to read the current status of the TS-509. Luckily the backlight turns off automatically, so it won't keep you awake if the TS-509 Pro is located in your room.
