SRM 1.3 - New Features

The RT6600ax uses a massively revamped version of SRM, SRM 1.3, and its companion mobile app, DS router 2.0, which introduces several improvements and new network management features. SRM 1.3 is currently only available for the RT6600ax. Later this year, it will be made available on the other Synology routers, the MR2200ac and RT2600ac. DS router 2.0 will be available for all devices running on SRM 1.2 or newer.

The new features of SRM 1.3 are:

Multiple VLAN/SSID support
The option to create up to five distinct networks allows for effective network separation and independent configuration of firewall rules, access policies, traffic and parental control, and web filtering.

Within each network, up to three SSIDs can be mapped (one per radio), for a total of up to 15 SSIDs for each unit. Different access rules and security settings can be configured for each SSIDs, adding even more flexibility.

Intended usage scenario
To group or separate devices based on their respective role and purpose (e.g., for home, office or IoT devices), hardening the network and simplifying management of complex deployments.

802.1q VLAN tagging
VLAN tagging allows administrators to fit each configurable network into an existing 802.1q compliant network. This feature is compatible with all usage modes:
  • Router
  • AP
  • In a mesh setup
Intended usage scenario
Quickly connect and bridge together existing network topologies with the WiFi capabilities the RT6600ax introduces.

Isolation & One-way firewall rules
While networks should be kept separate to isolate potentially vulnerable devices, some scenarios may require more flexibility.

One example is when you keep IP cameras on an isolated dedicated network, but your NAS serving as an NVR (Surveillance Station) on another.

To provide more flexibility, one-way firewall rules can be used to allow for access to the IP cameras only when initiated from a specific network or device.
  • Define source and destination by network, IP or IP range, and ports.
  • Support for passing through multicast traffic across networks for Airplay/Chromecast support.
Intended usage scenario
To allow specific access to devices connected to another network without compromising the deployment's security.

DS router 2.0

The new DS router 2.0 version allows for more control over the router while on the go, with the option to configure settings that were previously only available through the web-based SRM.

The app now allows to, among other things:
  • Carry out the initial setup of networks and mesh configurations
  • Set up multiple wireless networks
  • Manage port forwarding and traffic control
  • Configure Safe Access and manage VPN connections
Activity cards have been introduced to highlight important events (e.g., connection errors) or provide recommendations (e.g., system updates). Lastly, setting up multiple wireless networks is only possible with SRM 1.3.
