The Westone 4R does exactly the same as the original 4 model, but has a few extra tricks up its sleeves. The user replaceable cable is definitely interesting for all performers and audiophiles. Besides that the inclusion of a hard carrying case is definitely a nice addition. The price difference between the new 4Rs and non-Rs is around $50 which is fair considering what the 4Rs bring to the table.
Just to have the option to get a different cable and one with a microphone on is worth a lot especially if you are planning on using them on a daily commute. The only thing that is slightly annoying is that the cable bundled with the 4Rs is not optional. It would be great if there were some alternative cables to choose from right from the start. A set of Westone 4Rs with podded microphone and remote seems like the ideal high-end set of in-ears for normal day to day use.
Westone has managed to create an upgraded version of a brilliant original that adds enough features to be worth the current price premium of $50, but not much more. Overall the 4Rs manage to impress just as much as the original 4s even at the slightly higher price point.
