TechPowerUp is Hiring a Power Supply (PSU) Reviewer

TPU is looking to hire a PC enthusiast or professional to review PC power supplies (PSUs) part-time. Our current reviewer suvirintojas put out some great work with us since 2023, but has changes in his life that require his attention. We thank him for the wonderful work and hope we find a replacement of equal caliber. TechPowerUp PSU reviews tend to be highly technical, as we dive into the finer aspects of the PSU's switching performance, and quality of electrical output across various voltage domains. We also focus on noise levels and efficiency.

The PSU industry is in a state of transition toward newer standards such as ATX 3.1, PCIe Gen 5 CEM, and perhaps even ATX12VO, which means we'll never run out of new PSUs to review for at least the next few years. This is where you step in—we are looking for a PSU reviewer with fairly high availability for a significant output of reviews. We can help arrange as many PSU samples as you can handle.

SK hynix Starts Mass Production of World's First 321-High NAND

SK hynix Inc. announced today that it has started mass production of the world's first triple level cell-based 321-high 4D NAND Flash with 1 Tb capacity. Following its previous record as the industry's first provider of the world's highest 238-layer NAND since June last year, SK hynix has become the world's first supplier of the NAND with more than 300 layers by finding a technological breakthrough for stacking. The company plans to provide the 321-high products to customers from the first half of next year.

Stacking more than 300 layers came into reality as the company successfully adopted the "3 plugs" process technology. Known for its excellent production efficiency, the process electrically connects three plugs through an optimized follow-up process after three times of plug processes are finished. For the process, SK hynix developed a low-stress material, while introducing the technology that automatically corrects alignments among the plugs.

Qualcomm Bypasses "Oryon 2" for More Powerful Third-Gen AI PC Chips

At its recent Investor Day, Qualcomm talked about the third generation of its "Oryon" CPU cores, completely disregarding the second-generation Oryon cores for its AI PC project. The company projects these processors will debut in 2025, targeting devices priced as low as $600 to broaden its market presence. Qualcomm hopes to capture 30-50% of the serviceable addressable market (SAM) for non-x86 AI notebooks by 2029, a significant extension from its earlier, more ambitious 2027 target. Qualcomm's Oryon 3 CPUs will succeed the Snapdragon X Plus chips and are expected to deliver substantial performance and efficiency improvements. While no performance hints were dropped for the third-gen, the second-gen Oryon cores receive about a 30% boost in processing power and 57% greater efficiency compared to the first-generation Oryon chips. This indirectly indicates that Oryon 3 will record an even higher performance jump.

However, the Oryon 2 generation will skip the PC segment, appearing instead in Snapdragon 8 Elite smartphones. Despite these advancements, the road to higher market share is fraught with challenges. Qualcomm faces competition from potential entrants like MediaTek and NVIDIA, both expected to join the non-x86 notebook market by 2025. Furthermore, the company's revenue projections for the PC segment—$4 billion annually by 2029—pale compared to Intel's $29 billion in PC chip sales in 2023, highlighting the scale of competition in this space. Qualcomm's strategy also includes diversifying its revenue streams beyond PCs. By 2029, it targets $8 billion in automotive chip sales, $4 billion in industrial applications, and $2 billion from VR products. With competition in the Arm-based AI PCs heating up, companies must increase performance dramatically to get a head start.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Dives into Long Loading Times and Negative Reviews

Microsoft's latest Flight Simulator 2024 just launched, and it already appears to be riddled with problems. When internally testing, we ran into some issues regarding long loading times and eventual errors without getting to the game. Additionally, many others confirmed that they were experiencing problems. Launched on 08:00 am PT on November 19, the simulator has faced widespread server infrastructure issues affecting player access. CEO of Asobo, maker of this Flight Simulator franchise, Sebastian Wloch, has released a public statement via video addressing the widespread technical issues that plagued their latest game release. According to Wloch, while pre-launch testing had successfully simulated concurrent player counts of 200,000 users, the actual launch revealed critical weaknesses in the database cache system that weren't apparent during testing.

Additionally, the negative reviews stemming from these issues have piled up. On Steam, the game currently has 2,865 reviews, only 500 of which are positive. The remaining 2,000+ are overwhelmingly negative, with many users not being satisfied with the gameplay and quality of the release. The game's infrastructure is powered by Microsoft's Azure cloud, which is also not good marketing for Microsoft as the Azure platforms should signal better infrastructure scaling and stability. While these issues should be cleared in the long run, the short-term consequences are turning the launch into a colossal failure, as gamers expected more from this release. Lastly, the alpha version of the game was notorious for the massive internet bandwidth hog, causing up to 180 Mbit/s load.

AMD to Skip RDNA 5: UDNA Takes the Spotlight After RDNA 4

While the current generation of AMD graphics cards employs RDNA 3 at its core, and the upcoming RX 8000 series will feature RDNA 4, the latest leaks suggest RDNA 5 is not in development. Instead, UDNA will succeed RDNA 4, simplifying AMD's GPU roadmap. A credible source on the Chiphell forums, zhangzhonghao, reports that the UDNA-based RX 9000 series and Instinct MI400 AI accelerator will incorporate the same advanced Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) designs in both products, reminiscent of AMD's earlier GCN architectures before the CDNA and RDNA split. Sony's next-generation PlayStation 6 is also rumored to adopt UDNA technology. The PS5 and PS5 Pro currently utilize RDNA 2, while the Pro variant integrates elements of RDNA 4 for enhanced ray tracing. The PS6's CPU configuration remains unclear, but speculation revolves around Zen 4 or Zen 5 architectures.

The first UDNA gaming GPUs are expected to enter production by Q2 2026. Interestingly, AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs are anticipated to focus on entry-level to mid-range markets, potentially leaving high-end offerings until the UDNA generation. This strategic pause may allow AMD to refine AI-accelerated technologies like FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4, aiming to compete with NVIDIA's DLSS. This unification is inspired by NVIDIA's CUDA ecosystem, which supports cross-platform compatibility from laptops to high-performance servers. As AMD sees it, the decision addresses the challenges posed by maintaining separate architectures, which complicate memory subsystem optimizations and hinder forward and backward compatibility. Putting developer resources into RDNA 5 is not economically or strategically wise, given that UDNA is about to take over. Additionally, the company is enabling ROCm software support across all products ranging from consumer Radeon to enterprise Instinct MI. Accelerating software for one platform will translate to the entire product stack.

TCL Launches Inkjet-Printed OLED Display: 21.6-Inch 4K Panel with 99% DCI-P3 Coverage

Chinese giant TCL has officially begun mass production of inkjet-printed OLED displays. The company's subsidiary, TCL CSOT, is leading this initiative with its first product: a 21.6-inch 4K UHD panel designed for professional monitors. The new display boasts a 204 pixels per inch density and coverage of 99% of the DCI-P3 color space. With a maximum brightness of 350 cd/m², the panel is suited for professional applications, with TCL CSOT targeting the medical sector. Additionally, the firm advertises more than 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Using the leftovers from JOLED's closure, a Japanese venture that previously attempted similar technology but filed for bankruptcy in 2023, TCL's approach utilizes Gen 5.5 glass substrates measuring 1,300 × 1,500 mm. Notably, it incorporates other materials from the former Japanese pioneer.

Printed OLED technology promises more cost-effective display production compared to traditional methods. Unlike traditional evaporation methods in OLED production that use shadow masks and waste significant amounts of material, inkjet OLED printing allows for precise deposition of organic materials directly onto substrates. This maskless process not only reduces material waste but also minimizes contamination risks, which is crucial given OLEDs' sensitivity to environmental factors. The choice of starting with medical monitors mirrors JOLED's initial strategy from 2017, when they launched a similar 21.6-inch 4K panel for the same market segment. TCL has already announced plans to expand its printed OLED lineup in 2025 with additional display sizes. The success of this venture could potentially revolutionize OLED display manufacturing, making high-quality screens more accessible across various market segments, and we hope, one day, the enthusiast segment. TCL's consumer brand carrying these printed displays will be named APEX.

MSI Claw 8 AI+ To Get Massive Battery and Lunar Lake CPU With Full Unveiling at CES 2025

MSI previously gave us a teaser of what to expect from its upcoming Claw 8 AI+ gaming handheld with Intel's Lunar Lake Core Ultra CPUs, calling it "the most advanced 8-inch gaming handheld in the market," but a recent CES listing has divulged more details about the upcoming challenger to the likes of the Lenovo Legion Go. For starters, the upgraded battery capacity has been revealed, along with an estimated battery life and performance figures. Supposedly, more information will be revealed about the Claw 8 AI+ at CES 2025, which starts on January 7, 2025.

According to the CES page, the new MSI Claw 8 AI+ will have an 8-inch display and an 82 WHr battery, which will supposedly be able to deliver "4+ hours of gameplay for AAA titles." However, these manufacturer claims are generally to be taken with healthy helpings of salt, especially in when it comes to claims as nebulous as "AAA titles" without any proposed quality settings, specific games, or frame rates. Regarding the display, it wouldn't be surprising to see MSI use the same display as the one found in the Lenovo Legion Go, since there is a somewhat limited selection of 8-inch displays for handheld gaming devices. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ will also use Intel's 2nd-generation ARC iGPUs in conjunction with AI-enhanced graphics, which should provide a healthy uptick in both performance and efficiency, with the CES listing touting 48 TOPS of compute power.

NVIDIA "Blackwell" NVL72 Servers Reportedly Require Redesign Amid Overheating Problems

According to The Information, NVIDIA's latest "Blackwell" processors are reportedly encountering significant thermal management issues in high-density server configurations, potentially affecting deployment timelines for major tech companies. The challenges emerge specifically in NVL72 GB200 racks housing 72 GB200 processors, which can consume up to 120 kilowatts of power per rack, weighting a "mere" 3,000 pounds (or about 1.5 tons). These thermal concerns have prompted NVIDIA to revisit and modify its server rack designs multiple times to prevent performance degradation and potential hardware damage. Hyperscalers like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, who rely heavily on NVIDIA GPUs for training their advanced language models, have allegedly expressed concerns about possible delays in their data center deployment schedules.

The thermal management issues follow earlier setbacks related to a design flaw in the Blackwell production process. The problem stemmed from the complex CoWoS-L packaging technology, which connects dual chiplets using RDL interposer and LSI bridges. Thermal expansion mismatches between various components led to warping issues, requiring modifications to the GPU's metal layers and bump structures. A company spokesperson characterized these modifications as part of the standard development process, noting that a new photomask resolved this issue. The Information states that mass production of the revised Blackwell GPUs began in late October, with shipments expected to commence in late January. However, these timelines are unconfirmed by NVIDIA, and some server makers like Dell confirmed that these GB200 NVL72 liquid-cooled systems are shipping now, not in January, with CoreWave GPU cloud provider as a customer. The original report could be using older information, as Dell is one of NVIDIA's most significant partners and among the first in the supply chain to gain access to new GPU batches.

NVIDIA RTX 40-series Stocks Begin Drying Up as Decks are Cleared for RTX 50-series Blackwell

Chinese tech site Board Channels keeps tabs on the way computer hardware is moving at the very beginning of the supply-chain. It has some fascinating insights the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50-series "Blackwell" series of graphics cards. Apparently, NVIDIA has planned the transition between the current RTX 40-series "Ada" and the next-generation RTX 50-series such that there's minimal spillover inventory of the older generation graphics cards in the channel, so it doesn't end up with a situation similar to the one between the RTX 30-series "Ampere" and its successor. Back in 2021-22, the cryptocurrency mining boom, which waned toward the end of 2022, had caused an overproduction of RTX 30-series cards that lingered in the channel even as the RTX 40-series launched.

According to the report by Board Channels that's been translated by Gazlog and VideoCardz, the China-specific RTX 4090D has been vaporized from the channel, none of NVIDIA's AIC partners has any boards to sell. The RTX 4080 SUPER sees most AIC partners have their final batches shipping, which should clear out in November 2024. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER isn't as prominent a SKU as the RTX 4080 SUPER, and is being phased out at the same pace as its bigger AD103-based sibling, with last orders shipping this month. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 remain the most popular high-end graphics SKUs in this generation, and NVIDIA will supply these SKUs throughout December. Given that the RTX 5070 series doesn't come out till February (with wide availability in March), this makes sense. The RTX 4060 series will phase out a lot slower than the other SKUs, given its popularity, and the fact that the RTX 5060 series won't ramp until Q2-2025.

Intel Arc "Battlemage" SoC Teaser Points to December Launch

Intel's discrete GPUs are close, and recent reports indicate Intel will reveal its next-generation Arc Battlemage graphics cards in December, moving from an earlier expected Black Friday announcement. Hardware insider Golden Pig Upgrade first mentioned this timeline shift, with data researcher Tomasz Gawroński providing supporting evidence through shipping manifest analysis. The December timing appears to position Intel's announcement before CES 2025, where AMD plans to showcase its Radeon RX 8000 series with RDNA 4 architecture, and NVIDIA will present its GeForce RTX 50 line. This will give Intel ample room to "steal" the attention of the tech press, who will be busy with NVIDIA and AMD during CES.

X account Bionic_Squash has confirmed Battlemage won't be Intel's final discrete graphics card, addressing questions about the company's long-term graphics development plans. Intel's future roadmap includes the Xe3 "Celestial" architecture, though current information only confirms its initial implementation in mobile chips at a reduced scale. The timeline for a full discrete graphics card using Celestial architecture remains unspecified. We are also left to wonder about Intel's approach to discrete GPU marketing push, as the company has yet to gain any significant footing among enthusiasts. In the coming years, Intel's expansion could prove worthwhile as it updates its GPUs with more performance from newer generations.

New Ultrafast Memory Boosts Intel Data Center Chips

While Intel's primary product focus is on the processors, or brains, that make computers work, system memory (that's DRAM) is a critical component for performance. This is especially true in servers, where the multiplication of processing cores has outpaced the rise in memory bandwidth (in other words, the memory bandwidth available per core has fallen). In heavy-duty computing jobs like weather modeling, computational fluid dynamics and certain types of AI, this mismatch could create a bottleneck—until now.

After several years of development with industry partners, Intel engineers have found a path to open that bottleneck, crafting a novel solution that has created the fastest system memory ever and is set to become a new open industry standard. The recently introduced Intel Xeon 6 data center processors are the first to benefit from this new memory, called MRDIMMs, for higher performance—in the most plug-and-play manner imaginable.
