The BRD-3DS12 writes single and double-layer BD-R at 12X, single and double layer BD-RE at 2X. The BRD-3DU8 external drive writes single and double layer BD-R at 8X, and BD-RE at 2X. The BRD-3DS12 and BRD-3DU8 are priced at ¥28,500 (around US $343) and ¥29,600 ($356), respectively.

BR disks are still uber-expensive for what they offer. That's why BR writers are currently used next to 0%.

These are too expensive. Other brands are less than half of that price

You can get a nice internal for ~$125 USD. Look at that LG on sale at the egg. $80!? In addition, the media seems to be getting much cheaper especially on some of the deals that I've seen recently. Reading the reviews it sounds like there are quite a few people using them now. I might have to get one soon :)

I'm talking about the actual disks, not the units.
It's not at all cost-efficient to store on them.
