Zombie Survival MMO 'The War Z' Announced

Say, you like scavenging for supplies in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the walking dead, don't you? If Day Z is too intimidating, you may fancy the newly announced MMORPG The War Z, which seems to offer a slightly less hardcore "survival horror" experience but still has permadeath and that jazz if you want it. Roaming across maps of 200-400 square kilometres, you'll be searching for food and weapons, anything to keep the zombie hordes--and other players--at bay. There are RPG-y elements, like gaining experience to learn new skills, and safe towns where you can buy supplies, but it sounds pretty bleak in general. Hit the announcement for more details. As well as a 'hardcore' mode with permadeath, like in Day Z, there will be 'normal' servers where you can revive. Developer Hammerpoint Interactive plans to run dedicated public servers, but players can also run their own. And, pleasantly, The War Z doesn't seem to be either subscription-based or free-to-play. Like Guild Wars 2, once you buy the MMORPG there are no subscription fees. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were optional microtransactions too, though.

The War Z is due on PC this fall, and you can sign up for a closed beta launching in summer.

I read the book. Dunno how it will make a good MMO. IMO this should have been an FPS.

I must say I am excited. So someone took day Z and decided to make it a full fledged game I take it?

And maybe it could be a MMOFPSRPG?

Or something along the playstyle of Fallout 3/NV in an MMO environment minus VATS or the like?

Yeah the book was awesome. Don't think this game will live up to it. Sad really because it would make an GREAT Fallout style game.

I've registered for the beta. DayZ without the disconnects and loading times. Surely.

hopefully not until there is a game that is worthwhile... dayz is the closest thing yet and it still has a lot of work to do. i thought people would stop being so dismissive of other peoples' preferences...

I hope the graphics don't end up like that in the final product!

Seems like a cool concept though, in the hardcore server if you die you should become a Zombie for sure. ( so you can have well equipped zombies that take more damage and stuff)

I agree. I want a Fallout style George Romero/Tom Savini FPS Zombie simulator.

That sounds pretty tasty! :rockout:

As for War Z I just dunno, sounds like a soft core version of dayZ with mmo aspects added on. There may be a larger market for this but it's probably not for me.

The ARMA mechanics underneath DayZ add to the challenge. Movement and Gunplay, while challenging add alot of realism that I can't see War Z coming close too.

Time will tell I guess. Hope Rocket is working his butt off to beat this one to the punch.

Send in the clones! I was expecting this to happen. Every game studio is going to give a try at a game like DayZ. If Bohemia we're smart, they would be putting a lot more resources, time and money into DayZ. Really though WarZ, c'mon. TheMailMan is a DayZ hater, so beware of troll.

It that the Arma 2 engine? That looks like arma 2..
Arma 3 is right around the corner, please tell me that's not the arma 2 engine.
I want this game to succeed but to me it seems like it is being rushed..
Gonna make it fall flat on it's face if they keep rushing it.

This is Dayz from the look of it, I don't even have to look, I bet it's the same team..
If it's not, then holy ripoff batman...lol
Looks exactly like Dayz.

No I thought this game was based off the World War Z book. If it was it wasnt a rip off. But Now I see it has nothing to do with the book I can see where its a rip off.

Wow, really? So it is just a DayZ clone. Well, if other companies can make this game, and make it better I have no problem with it. Thing is, DayZ came out in what.. April? Now there's this game being released in the fall. That's a very short time to make a game. I wonder what this game was called before DayZ and what it actually was.

Believe it or not there is a World War Z game in the making. No details yet.

Btw, I think your title is wrong. It is just "War Z or WarZ" not The War Z.

Fallout's VATS feature prompted me to uninstall around 1 hour into the game. I couldn't stand how it dumbed down the shooting aspect. What a pity, that was the first time I was attempting to start playing that series.

Anyways, this game has some potential since it is providing a new genre. The whole zombie theme seems to have grown quite a bit over the last decade. Having said that, I won't be playing it.
