Day Z Mod To Go Stand-Alone This Year

The Day Z mod for ArmA 2 has been a runaway hit, boosting ArmA 2 sales and raising its profile among PC enthusiasts. The mod team has been open with its plans to spin off into its own stand-alone game, but it sounds like that's happening sooner than expected. Modder Dean Hall told VG247 that making it a stand-alone product could happen "certainly before Christmas," but that will rely on reaching an agreement first. Apparently he has entertained offers, but felt they were based on the mod's rocketing success rather than an understanding of the game.

"We're really on borrowed time," he said. "I want to see it become a standalone game, following the Minecraft model of a low price point, but that will only work if we say that everyone is going to pay, and in order for people to not feel ripped off we need to have a load of new content; so, things like base-building, tidying and cleaning up animations and add ragdoll physics as the like."

If he drops the arma 2 engine and finds a new one, it can be a great game..lol..
Arma 3's engine has potential.
I agree though with what he says and I like how he acknowledges features that need to be added and content that needs to be made, so peole don't feel ripped off..
Smart devs know if you piss of the paying customer, you end up with no customers.

I don't know about this. The mods already out there, and to rehash it with some extra features for cash... it better have a lot more too it. And for such a short turn around when the mod itself is just in Alpha testing. I mean I'm loving DayZ, tons of fun, I just realistically don't see them making money off it this year. I'd almost hope for it to not come this year, that is if they plan to use the Arma engine, because I'd much rather see Arma III get used.

What engine would you rather see used? Overall this engine seems to be fine and include most of the things that provide the realism to the mod. I can't think of another engine that is capable of what the direction of this mod is. Also another engine means he now needs to make a massive map from scratch.

Pretty much hit the nail right on the head, with that statement..
Great stuff, hope they don't do something stupid and piss off the fan base..
Just like you said, I'd rather see the Arma 3 engine.
Arma 2 is already getting dated and is dated in some aspects.

This is going to be awesome. If they really get serious about it and add rag doll physics and make the zombies movements and behaviors more realistic instead of seeing you through a building from a mile away and instant running at 100mph towards you.

That looks somewhat good. Kinda like a re-vamped company of heros lol. the weapon sounds are bout dead on to real military weapons. If I plaid of course I'd run with a saw(m249) I am a beast with that one. I may just look into it.

I have been itching to get arma II to get this Mod, but I hate arm II.. hehehe So, this sounds really good to me! I'd pay $20 bucks for a steam loaded Day Z game. :toast:

EDIT: COD engine is better than Arma II engine to me... I'd love to see this mod using the frostbite 2 engine

HEHE I knew it wouldn't take long after that comment.. lol I was joking, but really I don't care for the Arma II engine... And I know they couldn't use the COD engine.. About the only think I really use to like about the COD engine was the smoke.. in COD 2.. hehehe

EDIT: I hope they do a better job than the Desert Combat guys.. :toast: I loved Desert Combat mod for 1942!

Yes, it will be. If he's talking/hinting at a Christmas time release, there is no way that they would be able to put this game on a different engine and get it out this year or even next year. One can expect a lot of clones of this game to come soon as well.

Yea, moving over to a new engine would take some time. We can all hope for Day Z 2.. hehe someday.. I'll still take this as a standalone game with the Arma II engine this year. :toast:

There is already War Z that the developer talks about being a rival mod

NC37
Was so close to buying it on the Steam sale. But it came down in price late into the sale. By then I had gotten Skyrim and about a dozen other titles. I've got zombie games so its not like I'm desperate for Day Z. Plus ARMA2 engine just doesn't excite me much.

COD engine (Quake 3 engine) has it's zombie game called Nazi Zombies. Frostbite 2 engine...now that would be interesting. Could imagine using the environment to slow down or kill zombies. Blow out the wall of a building onto a horde...kill or slow down multiple, buying your team time to escape.

Nazi Zombies on that engine is grotesque. Graphics are waaaay outdated. I have played it.
It's also just a mind numbing shootfest. I can't stand games like that..

Some ppl dont seem to get the idea behind the game at all. Its not a cod shooter where you get points for killing zombies. Its a sandbox survival game. The biggest threat are the other players, not the NPCs.

Watching youtube clips of people and their reactions to this is priceless!

On topic, buying Arma2 just to play DayZ is what has prevented me from dipping into the pool. I have no interest whatsoever for Arma2, BF3 fixes that itch. If they price it at $10-15 it would be a definite buy and price competitive with the other just announced zombie game - War Z.

I tried DayZ even wasted $24 bucks buying the expansion. IMHO it's fucking terrible. You spawn in, die repeatedly to zombies while trying to find a weapon, die repeatedly to game bugs that insta-kill you, and then when you manage that, you will die repeatedly to other players ganking you. So the sooner that this shithole of a mod/game dies the better.
