CES: Samsung Develops First Truly Double-sided LCD
Samsung Electronics announced today that it has created the first LCD panel that can produce independent images on each side of a mobile LCD display. Samsung's new double-sided LCD can show two entirely different pictures or sets of visual data simultaneously on the front and back of the same screen. Other conventional double-sided LCDs can only show a reverse image of the same video data. This new development will replace two display panels with one, thereby reducing overall thickness of mobile products by at least 1mm. The new double-sided LCD is 2.6mm thick and 2.22" wide, with QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) resolution. It has brightness values of 250 nits for the front and 100 nits for the rear display and needs only one backlight for proper operation. The new Samsung double-sided LCD will be exhibited at the Consumer Electronics Show, which opens in Las Vegas on January 8.

less use of space means that they have alot more space for other technologies / equipment.
It would have some really good military/entertainment applications too.
MOBILE being the keyword. Mobile doesnt typically involve your everyday desktop environment. However it could (with an outside touchscreen and an inside LCD) prove quite a sexy tool on a laptop. Imagine being able to use the laptop conventionally, and as a sort of palm pad even when closed.
It has no use in a cell phone
It has no use for your iPod
Well you get the idea
what about data entry operators at call centres or hotlines?
imagine how much space a monitor of that sort would save. You could have a desk that ordinarily only has room for one person, and another individual could use the other monitor on the other side simultaneously. This saves a desk for every two people employed.
Meaning:
1) You can fit more people in ONE room
2) Networking is simpler, less cabling required
3) Less purchases of desks saves $$$
4) User takes up half the usual space but is still comfortable.
This is just ONE scenario.
and the less stuff you need the more money you have.
Thats kind of self explanatory right?
Your suggestions are more creative novelty then anything else to be honest.
There should be a more practical application that takes advantage of using such a device.
They can use one display when opened and the same display (double sided) when closed. Sadly the closed display is used just for time and stuff, so classic LCD is enough... however many people will surely be convinced by nice big colorfull primary display to buy new phone, so, whatever... :p
If you think about it creatively, lots of interesting MARKETABLE ideas come to mind.
We experienced released of Original Monopoly, Simpsons Monopoly and Star Wars Monopoly.
What about 3D Graphics Monopoly - The first portable version of it anyway.
