Valve Announces New Battle Royale Mode for CS:GO, Changes Model to Free to Play

Valve has brought about an update to their eons-old competitive shooter CS:GO. The update brings the game to the modern, post-Fortnite era of multiplayer games, with a new Battle Royale mode named "Danger Zone". The "Danger Zone" Battle Royale mode cuts the number of maximum players to 18, though, which is a far cry from other market offerings - but has designed to mode so that each match lasts at most 10 minutes, which should bring about some escalating tension despite the reduced number of players compared to other Battle Royale game modes. The usual "save the hostages" mechanic has been baked into the mode as a way for players to make money, which they can use to purchase weapons, a la classic CS fashion.

The other move that Valve has made in order to boost popularity of CS:GO has been to make the game free to play, waiving the usual $15 entry fee. It just wasn't justifiable, it seems, to keep such a price on a game released back in 2012 - especially not when compared to the money-making prowess of Fortnite.

Making CSGO f2p - genius, making a card game pay 2 play on top of pay 2 win? Is Valve bipolar?

CS:GO should have been F2P since they crammed in microtransactions years ago. As for the Battle Royale mode, I don't think CSGO veterans will care much, just means more newbies to smack down.

Anytime a popular fps goes free all that comes to mind is rampant hacking will ensue.

1999 Half Life - Counter Strike Mod was great
1.3 Was great
1.5 Was great
1.6 Was great
Source Was GREAT!
CSGO - I'm so sad :(

They should make a CSGO classic - With no skins, no shitty game play. No nerfing or changing weapon performance.
Bring back community servers, maps, etc.

Global Offensive is literally the same as Source but with slightly better graphics and new maps. To say its somehow worse simply because there's more actual content than in Source is just being elitist for the sake of "i played counterstrike before it was cool". Quit moaning because young people are playing a series you used to like and happen to enjoy alternative content. People are allowed to like different things, and a company is fully within their rights to create extra content for them. Your precious de_dust2 and scout rifle are still in the game for you to enjoy.

The game play is far different from the previous versions. If you played them all you'd know the difference. I haven't played de_dust 2 in years lol.
Might as well play as_oilrig. It's not so much the content, as it is consistency. They've basically killed the communities..
People have written entire articles why its bad. There's good and bad in everything.

I have 6000+ hours logged in CSS and 3000 hours logged in CSGO. CSGO is fine.

I'm just expressing my opinion like you. I have 9K hrs in CSS and probably more then that in 1.6 on and old account.
i'm just saying, the game mechanics are basically bad compared to previous versions. That's why so many ppl still play CSS.
It's hard to be consistent, when the game mechanics are always changing.

I can be nostalgic about a game I've spent my whole life playing.
If they are making this free to play. Hackers will only get worse.
There is no penalty for a banned account.. No money spent to make a new one.

The mechanics are the same, they simply balanced maps and weapons and tried to add some more content so people wouldn't get bored.

The fact your first assumption was that I'd never played a CS game as defence of your position spoke volumes. This is why people don't like "gamers". The vocal ones are condescending and elitist. Gatekeepers in any line of work or hobby are the crappiest people alive and hamstring progress and innovation.

I guess some of us are just happier with simple things, and don't need extravagance to enjoy simple strategic gameplay.

IIRC Valve has been experimenting behind the scenes with new methods of anti-cheat for months (vac-net etc), probably actually because they wanted to go f2p. Plus there is trust factor / prime matchmaking so current players will almost never encounter new accounts. I can't even remember when I saw my last cheater in CSGO

Since we're all just random people on the Internet, I have fifteen billion hours in CS and CSS combined from back before Steam recorded play time. Why not.

I definitely enjoyed the gameplay of 1.6 most, GoldSrc just worked. Source was great but compared to the movement and recoil of 1.6 it always felt clunky to me.

GO on the other hand? I think I played roughly 2 hours before giving up.

CS will always have a place in my heart but GO just didn't do it for me.

I don't care for the player count in their battle royal. Becomes difficult to encounter other players. I have played two games, the first game I came in 3rd. The second I came in 1st. Only encountered 1 other player each game.

I'm with RCoon. Can we cut the elitist "I HAS MORE HOURS YOU NOOB" horsecrap? People can have different opinions and they ARE valid. That is not up for debate, it is simply called human decency.

Your talking to TPU's official game reviewer, by the way.

No you don't get it, i'm not saying X game is better than Y game, that's mostly subjective no doubt. What i was arguing about was the fact the games are alike, which isn't true, because yes, basically it works the same way, but mechanics are very different between those two games, and some of them weren't even present in CSS. And some parts of gameplay are overall different.

I fully admit I misunderstood. As I have not played either game I'll step aside.

This is soooooooooooo good. I have been dying to try out something good other than Warface which is pretty much a lagface/bugface with a handful of servers for the whole frigging world.
