Surprising Absolutely No One, AMD RX 6800 Series Pretty Much Out of Stock, And Scalping Becomes a Pervasive Industry Problem

The title says it all, really. We've only just been able to add AMD's latest RX 6800 and 6800 XT graphics cards to our shopping carts in multiple etailers, but the cat is already out of the bag and into scalpers' pockets. This has been a recurring event for all gaming-related tech, from DIY PC parts to the latest-gen games consoles from both Microsoft and Sony. At this point, it becomes moot to talk about availability issues, or demand issues, or reaching a conclusion between the two - the stock just isn't there for anything gaming-related, period.

Some etailers are only selling their graphics cards in-person, as a way to both control flow of stock and protect themselves from scalpers buying up the entire inventory with recourse to some digital sidekicks that automate the purchase process, and then allow them to resell anything from graphics cards from NVIDIA to AMD, passing through AMD's latest Ryzen 5000 series and the Xbox Series X and PS5 gaming consoles.
At a time where the COVID pandemic is still well underway and has actually been ever more pervasive and threatening in these winter months across the world (where winter months apply at this time of year, eh), the decision to only carry in-store inventory not only forces more people to enter possible infection scenarios, but also overturns the entire purchase process. Perhaps the time has come for etailers to actually review their online sale policies, and make things as hard as possible for scalpers to circumvent their (at times laughable) order mechanisms.
Selling only a single graphics card per purchase, not allowing the same credit card or billing information to be used for copies of the same or comparable articles, introducing captchas for every finalized cart, not allowing shipment for the same address, instituting a queue system that removes the products from stock for all but the contacted customers, and even manual filtering of orders like NVIDIA instituted on their store - these would all be sensible, partial solutions to fix this problem for the consumer, whilst simultaneously protecting customers from (I'm sorry) pretty poor choices in demanding they physically go to a store to maybe be able to get that latest gaming console or graphics card.
Of course, I guess for etailers, a sale is a sale, wherever and however it's done. They don't deal with the brand damage that surfaces from these practices, and they make their profit - as small as it sometimes is - all the same. For them, a card off the shelf is a card off the shelf, and that's that.

TheLostSwedeSince it's in the middle of night here, most shops haven't updated their inventory, but at least a couple of shops seem to have stock.
Plenty of 3090's and 3080's in stock here though.
Nobody in their right mind wants nvidia when AMD's latest gen is out!

I woud'nt worry about it too much, you can also wait for 1 to 2 months, or even better after the hollidays, chances are big you can get a card.

TheDeeGeeScalpers need the wild west treatment... hanging.
No, that would be too good for 'em, they deserve that OTHER w.w. treatment....

Tarred & feathered, strung up by their toenails, and left to rot in the sun while the vultures pick at their dried-assed carcasses, hehehehe :peace:

Ah, a fellow bloody Canadian, eh? I've pretty much given up on getting one before New Year... then again, considering what games I'm playing at the moment, I don't even need it. Maybe I'll just grab a second-hand 5700 after they drop under $300.

Idk about that. Its not like AMDs shit is smacking Nvidia around. Maybe if power consumptions matters to you...

Either is a fine choice. The deciding factors are really RT vs power consumption.

Just wanted to add that the fact a few users here were able to pick up a card make this NOT a paper launch.

Neither was the Nvidia launches, just super high demand and lack of supply because of COVID-19. Also the gaming population has grown since the last console launches (2013).

20 years ago the only way I could own a PC was to build it myself. I could buy parts at a local store or when a computer show would come into town from time to time. Now it looks like you can't even get the parts online without getting scalped. Man, have times changed. To think that ALL that was said about how online shopping was the way to go. Now we have major supply issues that is unfolded right before everyone's eyes and nobody can do a damn think about it.

I dont recall many launch that all products were sold out on day 1 (if they were available at all lol) in the 20+ years i was following IT.

Sold out on day 1 is one thing, not available 3 month after launch is another one. We still have to wait to see if both Ryzen 5000 cpu and 6000 gpu release are paperlaunch or not.

i hope i could get a 6800 in december, but we will see.

Technically if there's cards in the hands of consumers, no matter the level at which that is, its not a paper launch by definition.

scalping is human nature caused by greed, and the desperate need of enthusiasts to have to latest crap. If there was not such desperate need then scalping would be pointless so not happen. scalpers are hated but just playing to exactly that need.

unfortunately this isn't true at all, the real truth is that we just live in a two class society, there are a LOT of rich semi-rich people in this world, and there are also a LOT of us who just get by. both groups are surprisingly big if you don't count the 1% top.

it's just a sad truth of our existence, and probably always will be.

I agree, if you want one, pay ebay price, or buy a beer and cry in it.

Imagine actually buying a hot new item from a scalper. Time and time again we've seen issues with launch day products. It's almost a fact of life in the PC industry. So you're buying probably a shitty product compared to what would be available later when the kinks get worked out, and your warranty is probably going to be complicated too because you technically bought it second hand, for an inflated price.

With all the downsides of buying scalped products, especially in the PC industry, I'm surprised they're even in "business". My 2600k system still has nothing to fear...

The truth is people are crying at AMD and nvidia for not having totally non-essential product not in stock. Most people complaining are probably already fine with their current PC and the upgrade is just luxury.

And Also, Both Nvidia and AMD would prefer to have their cards in stock so they could grab the money of everyone wanting to buy them.
