AMD RX 6800 & RX 6800 XT Partner Cards Won't Hit MSRP Until Early 2021

The launch of the AMD RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT was plagued with a lack of availability and inflated prices. Retailers sold out of reference models almost immediately leading to price gouging and the launch of custom boards a week later did little to ease the situation. AMD has acknowledged the situation and is working with AIBs to achieve MSRP prices. In an unofficial comment to Hardware Unboxed, an AMD representative confirmed that they hoped to reach MSRP prices within 4 to 8 weeks for custom cards. The cards are currently selling for 100+ USD higher than their suggested retail prices at retailers across the globe so this news from AMD will be welcome for many.

Come on guys, it's just some GPUs... No need to go to war over them...

On a personal note, I'm just waiting till things are considered 'normal' (whatever that is...) and I'm not going to be paying over the odds for any hardware I'm buying.. Not a chance!! :)

ZoneDymoI dont really understand what you are trying to say, its all out of stock, all of it, prices mean little at that point
No stock or not, the listed price for RX6800 and 6800XT are just outrageous. Even if they have RX6800/XT in stock, would you buy them at those prices ? seems like a few people managed to grab the 3080 also.

wolfThe Radeon marketing team just needs a thorough house cleaning at this point. It's like every major launch there's some absurd own goal.
And you think that you would be better at marketing? This isn't necessary for AMD to clean house with marketing. This issue is manifest in many companies where one department doesn't always know what the other departments are doing. This is an issue at the company where I work! This issue isn't going to ever get fixed as you will always have to deal with other people who don't have a clue about what you are doing, not their fault necessarily, it just happens because everyone isn't an expert at everything. What you need is a healthy dose of reality where inter-departmental communications can be lacking or incorrect. Try explaining what changes you made to equipment on a cell tower to someone in the office who has never set foot on a tower!

Meanwhile 3000 series are monstrously overpriced all over the rest of the world, much more so than RX6000.

Funny I can buy a 3080 for the same price as reference RX 6800 (not even XT) from my local retailer

Those prices are around 750usd before VAT

Sure, but people had no problem paying 1200€+ for 2080 Ti (which is beaten by both of them) just a few months ago. Wasn't that outrageous too? And just for scale: that's 1.5x the highest price your listed GPUs have ...

People pay more for the best performing GPU, nothing new there, hell there were a bunch of people who bought the Titan V at 3000usd too.
The situation here is AIBs expecting people to pay more for the RX6800XT, which is slightly slower than 3080 ? do you go for the ugly girl when you could hook up with a prettier one  (well even when you are dreaming)

Both cards have different strengths and weaknesses, thus the choice is not obvious and can't be performed by just looking at one metric. The same as with the girls: the ugly one could have a heart of gold, and the pretty one could be a crazy b*tch. Not so easy to pick now, eh? :)

nah I mean only when you are dreaming, no girl is gonna throw themselves at guy who spend 700usd or more for GPU irl  .
So you would screw the ugly one in your dream just because she might has nice personalities eh

More than for what?

In Germany 3070's cost about 700 Euro (more than what AMD charges for 6800XT on their site), 3080 about 1000-1050, 3090 go for 1750+.

All quite in line with how "MSRP" worked with 2080Ti.

Reply bans will be issued. Not sure what the argument is about, both products are OOS (at least in my neck of the woods). Also, if you're going to argue a point, make sure your graphs/links are not cherry-picked. It makes you look ignorant:rolleyes:

medi01Did you just say that $600+ GPUs have lower margin than APUs in consoles that sell for $399/$499???
Maybe. Note that the largest of the dies (Xbox series X SoC) is just 360mm^2, compared to 520mm^2 of RDNA2. Also, they're high volume products that bring in a lot of revenue. Even if the margin is not as high, AMD is contractually obligated to provide Sony and Microsoft a certain number of SoCs. Therefore, RDNA2 is actually competing with AMD's own products with much higher margins / mm^2 - Ryzen 5000 chiplets, mobile SoCs, and MI100s for the wafers.

SovsefandenAMD did a TRUE paperlaunch, thats why you can't buy one, stock won't be normal anytime soon, several retailers already said this

Should improve by Q2 2021

Imagine how many Ampere cards Nvidia have shipped by then, people are literally standing in line to get one

AMD had a golden oppotunity but dropped the ball
AMD did not miss an opportunity. If they wait until after holiday season when they have better supply, they miss holiday sales. They are in business to make money and make things that people want. If they release earlier than they have supply for, then scalpers may get a hot item earlier and sell some of those items, and some lucky few will get a shiny new piece of hardware for the holidays. The other part that you need to comprehend is that no matter whether AMD or any other company waits or releases early, you won't likely be getting that product early due to price and demand, thus your wait time for the product will be the same in the end whether they release early or later. So it does not really matter other than you are sour because you can't get what you want right now since it is available right now rather than later release with more product.

Also, this year has been a perfect storm of product release from AMD and hardware utilizing AMD chips, so TSMC can only supply as much as was contracted and all that supply that was contracted has to be divided up between consoles (two major releases), GPUs (6000 series) and CPUs (5000 series). So many hot new products and not enough supply for all that new stuff.

nVidia on the other hand just screwed you by having supply but selling a healthy amount of it to miners. How much hot new hardware did they release? They released the 30 series of GPUs. See above for comparison and see who loves gamers more.

I'm excited to buy new gear, but I can wait and let the I-can't-wait-must-have-now people buy the scalper priced hardware and when prices finally drop to reasonable levels then I can upgrade.

I think they've made a few key miss-steps here that would be easily avoided with a reprimand/letting someone at AMD go, and an RTG staff meeting about what to say and when to say it.

I disagree. They are producing desirable products versus a few years ago and as I stated, they have to meet contractual agreements and they are faced with supply limitations. Did you even read anything in my post? I answered your statement. They don't want to miss out on holiday sales even if that means that everyone cannot run out and buy a PS5, XBOX Series, RX6000 series or 5000 series hardware when they want it and at the price they want it. Patience is a virtue.

Of course I read it, I think maybe you're missing my point? No matter what the situation is, was, or would have been, they pissed people off my making miss-steps along the path to launching in what they said. If they had have had a more honest approach, they would have graciously side-stepped a lot of shade. People can be remarkably understanding if you just tell them the truth.

I agree with what you are saying in terms of honesty is the best policy. Marketing 101 seems to teach that marketers need to hype stuff up to get people excited about a product. Did the marketing team consider how many products were being released that utilized AMD silicone? Perhaps not and it wouldn't be the first nor the last time it happened to them, let alone the millions of other companies that have the same problem. Marketing can make foolish blunders because they don't understand, haven't stopped to try and understand, the many other dynamics with regard to selling silicone products in so many product stacks as AMD is doing. Frank Azor shouldn't have said anything about a $10 bet with Andre Elijah. It could also be that AMD misjudged the demand that there is in the PC community for new hardware. Business and marketing can be complex with what someone can say or not say and the repercussions. If AMD is soft and says that they might have enough stock, that can scare investors, or other such entities. If they take a hard approach and say that they will have enough stock to meet demand, it hurts us because they lied, but they may please shareholders who want to hear good news.

I see what you are saying, and I agree that in a perfect world AMD could have done better by saying that they won't have enough stock to meet demand but they are working on getting what they have onto store shelves. However, as I have gotten older and learned more about business and marketing and the slew of dynamics involved, the kind of response that you are looking for would probably be more likely heard from a smaller company than a larger, global company due to investors and other such groups that AMD has to deal with besides us gamers.

Just saw this on Marketwatch: AMD stock rallies to record close after CEO sounds positive notes on 2021 and PC market - MarketWatch

Lisa Su seems to think that demand is going to be strong throughout 2021 due to: “And so you know the idea that a household, you could do one PC per household, perhaps if you’re only using it an hour a day, it makes sense,” she continued. “But now it’s really about one PC per person.”

I won’t trust what they said about prices after they mentioned about the “availability” of RX 6800, when in actual fact, you can barely find it. Not that many scalpers’ listing it also means that they can’t get it either. I feel AMD did very poorly this year despite all the good products they launched. At the start of the year, not much Renoir based laptops (some days can’t get enough Renoir chips), then there’s no Renoir APU for retail, next is the scarce Ryzen 5xxx and finally the vapourware RX 68xx.

LOL it's not the lack of availability that is meme worthy, it's the lack of honesty that is RTG PR team, remember the "Poor Volta" propaganda a few years back ?
If RTG don't have RX6000 stock, just say so, or at least shut up about it. At least Nvidia acknowledged their lack of inventory, meanwhile RTG was assuring everyone there will be plenty of stock  . Oh and when RX6000 stock come, the price will be off putting to many.

I'm not exactly gonna buy a RX6000 card but I hoped that its availabilty will drive down the GPU market prices :banghead:,gonna be a long time before that happen...

I agree both NVIDIA and AMD cards are sold at higher prices than MSRP here in Germany.

The stock situation is problem not only for AMD cards but also NVIDIA here in Germany. RTX 3080 is sold out everywhere as well as 6800XT.

I called Mindfactory after the launch of 6800XT to ask them when they will have any cards back in stock.
I ordered 6800XT on their website on 18.11 but did not get one as they were sold out while I was still paying with PayPal for the one I placed in my basket.
The guy from hotline told me that they face exactly same situation with 6800XT as RTX 3080. He said since the launch they received very low quantities of RTX 3080 as also 6800XT.

For 6800XT he said on launch day they had only handful of cards which were sold out within minutes.
He told me that he does not expect the situation to improve for both NVIDIA and AMD until 1 to 2 moths into 2021.

By the way same issue for Ryzen 5800x. Since launch it is sold out everywhere. Now and then a few appears online. I was lucky to get 5800x Tray version from Alternate for 469€ otherwise they are sold for over 500€ everywhere when any sample is there.

I bought 6800XT new unopened sample from private person on eBay who got it from Mindfactory on launch day from 869€ and sold me for 999€.
Seeing that custom cards were sold in range 979-1129€, I bought the reference for the price.

I need reference card for custom watercooling setup and after AMD's announcement that 6800XT reference will not be produced anymore from early 2021. It does not look like these will return in stock anymore.

So far very happy with 6800XT and 5800x setup. Doing lot of tuning currently to find best performance by pushing frequency up while undervolting and increasing power limit.
Hopefully EK will ship my waterblock this week so that I can do further tuning.

Are you trolling, we just had the launch we did with Both out of stock and chatting poop, with 2 times the performance being a stand out line this year and the best your coming up with is the poor Volta comment an intel employee said years ago.
That bold bit, you don't say, so what are you about if not trolling.

Do you remember when people were expecting the new AMD cards to be more powerful whilst being considerably cheaper? Right.
