Nextorage Readying NE5N Gen 5 SSD Range With Bulky Heatsink

Nextorage Japan is preparing its NE5N range of PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs for launch in early June - listings have emerged on Newegg for 2 TB and 1 TB models - with a product page appearing recently on the company's (Japanese language) website. These units boast read and write speeds rated for operation up to 10 GB/s, and are based on Phison's E26 PCIe Gen 5 controller. Nextorage started off as a provider of PlayStation 5-oriented PCIe Gen 4 SSD products, due to company ties to Sony Corporation, but its upcoming NE5N range indicates that it intends to target buyers within the enthusiast PC market.

The initial batch of cutting edge SSDs are unlikely to end up in any PS5 consoles, thanks to a sizable dual formation heatsink - the Japanese company has filed a patent for the bulky two-level structure and heatpipe combination design. Gen 5 SSDs are said to be difficult to tame in terms of heat output, and manufacturers are going to great lengths (and sizes) to provide adequate cooling solutions in advance. Future versions of Nextorage Japan's NE5N NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are being refined for compact PCs and laptops, so it will be interesting to find out about the intended thermal tempering for more cramped environments.
The NE5N 2 TB and 1 TB models are currently available to pre-order at Newegg for $499.99 and $249.99 (respectively).
Newegg listing details:
  • Interface PCIe 5.0 × 4, NVMe 2.0
  • Ultra-fast PCIe Gen 5.0x4 realized max read 10,000 MB/s max write 10,000 MB/s. Tested in Nextorage PC environment.
  • Optimized cooling structure for stable game play. An aluminium heatsink, coated with a highly thermally radioactive black alumite.
  • SLC caching, Advanced wear leveling, Bad block management, Thermal throttling, TRIM, S.M.A.R.T, Over-provision, ECC, End to end data path protection
  • 5 years from the purchase date or before writing the maximum TBW (Total Bytes Written.)

10/10 is soooo slow and $500/250 is sooooo much and a 40mm tall heatsink is soooo high....

apparently the folks @Nexer have been partaking of some really, really high-grade pharma :D

Reminds me...
I wonder who's the "Kel-Tec of computer components"?

(Kel-Tec is a Cocoa, FL USA based manufacturer, known for their "innovative" designs. They're also 'famous' for their highly-varying production quality and Coca-fuelled R&D department.)

That heatsink is so dumb.

You dont need one that large. The actual power draw of M.2 drives is int he single digits. A small aluminum job works just fine.

As I said long before PCI-E 5.0 ssd's were out, this is just a case of more heat, more power usage, more price and no tangible real world benefits for the privilege of being ripped off. Maybe the next gen 300+ layer nand will bring some improvements, but the 200+ layer nand has done jack shit for performance/power/heat.

Looking forward to the PCI-E 6.0 drives, which will be vertical mounted with dual PCI-E slots and 3 fans cooling.
nVME SSDs are the new Video cards!!

They will also need 6x 16pin power cables, which of course will require development & purchase of some new 5kw PSU's (or a warp core) to power just them :(
