so this is a stand alone, set after the events of the main game. good to know
FF7 Remake is something else. So its kinda retelling of the OG FF7 but in a sense that the OG FF7 already happened and it is some stupid marvel bullshit nonsense about parrallel universes and other crap, typical Nomura nonsense.
Likely the same is gonna happen with Rebirth the moment it hits PC. The story of FF7R is nothing of the sort, it just acknowledges that the first game exists and remakes it in light of that fact.
The original resonated because of characters and plot points that no longer work as such.
Everyone knows who Sephiroth is, so there's no point in hiding him for the first 50 hours.
Everyone knows Aerith dies by his hand, so there is no longer an emotional charge behind that event.
And on and on it goes...
The way they approached it is literally as a RETELLING of a story.
Because when you a retell a story - in the days before you could copy-paste it in a text editor - the story changed depending on context.
And they reflected on the context masterfully tbh, especially the part where they included the people who don't want the story to change in the story as a force within the game itself and let you kick their sorry butts at the end lol
Hope there is an option to keep them there.
At the end of remake the boss fights were too much in my view, like they were too long winded, and they over did the multiple phases as well, I think jenova was something like 4 boss fights in one.
Also I felt the yuffie DLC with how hard they made the box buster mini game (which has prevented me from platting the game), and the elements they added for perfect timing, I can see the direction they might be taking the game, further emphasised if they have removed the on screen button hints.
The mobile game indicates they still havent learnt from past mistakes, they released an FF7 game on mobile alongside remake which died, and people were crying out for it to come on PC to get a new user base but SE seem obsessed making games exclusive to mobile platforms that are exciting to play. Crisis Core was exclusive to PSP handheld, people played it big screen emulated for years then they finally released it officially big screen and was a hit. Now this ever crisis game probably will be mobile exclusive for about 10 years. For reference I prefer the original crisis core as they changed gameplay elements in the new one to make it faster paced. :(
On the earlier comment about the confusion, whats going on is FF7 is that it is SE's probably most valuable IP, its a massive hit as a brand, so they are making all these games to take advantage of it (its also had movies made like advent children). Rebirth is basically remake part 2 so its a continuation of the main FF7 remake.
I think they were going to introduce Zack as part of the broken time line, and I did like what they were doing with that, but there was a lot of angry Japanese players going mad that they deviated from the original story, and I think I remember reading a quote from the lead dev they would fix that in the next game (rebirth). So he probably will only appear in cut scenes now.
So none of your choices or effort put into the first part mean anything because everyone will start part 2 with the same choices assumed, same gear, ect. I'm sure the same will apply to part 3 as well.
IMO this alone ensures without a doubt this game will never live up to the original. Might as well just watch a VOD of the gameplay because none of the choices you could have made in your own playthrough mean anything. Better yet go play the original with mods.
If you want pure OG story, luckily FF7 is one of the most heavily modded games out there, is voice acting, 4k textures, UI modernisation, even mods that redo all the gameplay. Has its own driver now also so can play it on vulkan, dx11, dx12, and works good on the steam deck, 60fps support, widescreen support and more.
