AMD Unveils Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT Graphics Cards

AMD today at Gamescom unveiled the Radeon RX 7800 XT and Radeon RX 7700 XT performance-segment graphics cards. Designed for maxed out gaming at 1440p with ray tracing, the two are designed to square off against NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 series, offering competitive performance and pricing. The two are based on AMD's latest RDNA3 graphics architecture, and use the 5 nm foundry process where it matters. Both cards claim to offer not just superior performance to the specific NVIDIA RTX 40-series SKUs they're designed to compete with, but also better future-proofing, with more video memory on offer.

At the heart of the two is the new "Navi 32" GPU, AMD's second largest chip from this generation. It is a chiplet GPU, just like the "Navi 31" that powers the RX 7900 series, albeit slightly scaled down. The graphics compute die (GCD), the die with the main graphics rendering and compute machinery, is built on the 5 nm EUV foundry node. It is flanked by four memory cache dies (MCDs), each built on the 6 nm foundry node. These are the same MCDs found in the "Navi 31," but four in number instead of six, which gives the "Navi 32" a 256-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT maxes out the "Navi 32," enabling all 60 compute units (CU) physically present, which works out to 3,840 stream processors, 120 AI accelerators, 60 Ray accelerators, 64 MB of Infinity Cache, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across the chip's full 256-bit memory interface. The GPU ticks at 2124 MHz Game clocks, and 2430 MHz boost; while its memory runs at 19.5 Gbps, resulting in 624 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The card is configured with 263 W of total board power, and its reference design comes with two 8-pin PCIe power connectors.
The Radeon RX 7700 XT is cut down from the same "Navi 32" silicon as the RX 7800 XT, and uses the same reference board design. The biggest change here, is that the memory size is reduced to 12 GB, the Infinity Cache to 48 MB, and the memory bus width to 192-bit. One of the four MCDs on the "Navi 32" silicon is disabled. Over on the GCD, the RX 7700 XT is configured with 54 CU, which works out to 3,456 stream processors, 108 AI accelerators, 54 Ray accelerators, and 180 TMUs. The GPU runs at higher clock speeds than the RX 7800 XT, with 2171 MHz Game clocks, and 2544 MHz boost. The memory speed, however, is lower, at 18 Gbps, which over the 192-bit memory interface, puts out 432 GB/s of bandwidth. The RX 7700 XT is configured with 245 W of total board power, and has the same dual 8-pin power input setup as the RX 7800 XT.
In terms of performance, AMD claims that the Radeon RX 7800 XT offers anywhere between 2% to 23% performance gains over the GeForce RTX 4070 in 13 of the 19 games they tested. Testing was done at 1440p with max settings for each game. AMD also claims that the extra 4 GB of memory should give you better future-proofing. The Radeon RX 7700 XT, on the other hand, is shown scoring anywhere between 1% and 31% higher than the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB, in 16 out of 19 games that the two cards were compared in.

The reason AMD chose the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB for comparisons, is because it intends to price the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT competitively to them. The Radeon RX 7800 XT is priced at USD $499, while the RX 7700 XT is priced at $449. Both cards go on sale from September 6, 2023.

I guess I need to save up for a 7800 XT.

It will be interesting how these perform in independent testing.... The 7700XT just looks like it's there to upsell you to the 7800XT Kinda like what they did at launch with the 7900 series.... Hard to knock them too much on the 7700XT pricing even though it seems to offer worse value than the 7800XT when Nvidia offerings in this price range are so terrible in the 4060ti and 4060ti 16GB they smartly priced them quite a bit lower than the 4070.

It was worth enduring the headache this German guy gave me. :ohwell:
Good price... but it seems that the existence of the 7800 XT makes it pointless to buy the 7700XT, given the small price difference.

That seems to be the play with RDNA3, price the cut down silicon close enough to it's older brother that it makes it seem worth it to just go for the full die.

Such a strategy usually points to high yields which isn't a surprise given the relatively small sizes of the GCDs.

Wow, in every way (according to the Specs) the 7800XT is faster than the 6800XT. 624 GB/s is pretty fast for Memory Bandwidth. Why does that matter? The faster the Video memory the less data has to be sent to RAM and with RE bar one of the most important things about RDNA for me. What is spectacular though is the 6800XT must get a price cut now.

I look at is you are paying $50 but 4GB more VRAM and faster Memory throughput.

How is the 7800XT using 263W? The 6800XT has 4608 SP and uses 300W, meaning the 7800XT has 16% fewer SP and is only using 12% less power. That's even after a shrink from the 7nm node to 5nm.

The price is better then I was expecting though.

It's probably clocked higher than its sweet spot. It's two thirds of the 7900 XTX in almost every way and the power consumption at equal clocks should be correspondingly less too at about 230 W or so.

6800XT $649 at launch
7800XT $499 at launch

Nice!

Now if they can just put two of them together on the same package as one GPU.

They are going to perform about the same in Rasterizaion so you'd hope they weren't launched at the same price and looking at the power figures use close to the same wattage at stock.

The naming this generation just sucks the real 6800XT replacement is the 7900XT.

^ I keep telling everyone AMD is 100% on board with Jensenomics.
Neither of these companies give half AF, which honestly hurts more coming from AMD since performance-value was always their thing.

These companies are going to price their products at whatever the market will bear.

They don't have any incentive to engage a price war on consumer graphics cards because the same wafers can be used to sell AI accelerator GPUs to corporate customers at a much higher gross margin.

PC gaming as a semiconductor business isn't as important as it was 5-7 years ago. This is not news, it has been going on for a while.

CAGR in the data center business for Nvidia has been very telling as well as the company's forward guidance. Remember 170% YoY growth in their data center business for Nvidia.

PC hardware -- adjusted for inflation -- is cheaper than it was 20 years ago but DIY PC building is still very much a niche activity.

kinda painful they are comparing to a 5700xt and not a 6700xt / 6800....

also 50 bucks price difference is ridiculous considering the specs, they dont want you to buy the 7700xt...

Inb4 a hardwareUnboxed video bashing the pricing, saying the 7700xt should be xxx Dollars and expecting it to fall to that price point in the coming months...and then it does.

Chiplet architectures are always less power efficient than monolithic ones. Most expensive operation in a chip energy wise is transferring data so inter chip communication is way more power ineficeint.

My 6800XT only pulled 255 Watts max after Driver updates.

I do not agree with that. There is nothing to compare a 6800Xt to a 7900XT......nothing. We don't know yet how they will perform but the point is the price.

It's just a reflection of the fact that generational upgrades aren't that significant anymore.

When you have high yields, you don't want to sell much of the lower performance product. This $50 difference is a consequence of that.

They thought the crypto prices would be the new norm, but they didn't reckon with the headwinds for the global economy.

AMD is clearly avoiding comparing these RNDA 3 cards to their equivalent Radeon predecessors, undoubtedly because they will end up looking like poor upgrades.

It appears that the 7700 XT might actually take a drop in performance-per-watt since the new card's power requirements are higher.

They probably announced this on a Friday because they knew there would be less coverage and attention than a Tuesday announcement at a more normal time (1PM ET/10AM PT).

There's very little news here other than they've plugged some of the obvious holes in their RDNA 3 product stack.

Performance per dollar is never identical. There are always better and worse values in any product lines.

And not just graphics cards or even PC hardware in general. It applies to everything sold, whether it be oranges, toilet paper rolls, pickup trucks, whatever.

@btarunr why not include the slide with the prices, or mention the prices in euros?
Very curious about 7800XT "true" price around here. The cheapest 16GB (edit) 4060TI is ~537€ , if the 7800XT at 550€ beats it in RT scenarios it'll be the final nail in the coffin for the 16gb version of the 4060, at least at that price point.

Assuming they are priced the same the 7800XT is likely to be the much better buy regardless of RT performance.... The 4060ti is pretty terrible and it is likely only to win in games like CP2077 with RT set to ultra which IMHO isn't really playable anyways on this tier of gpu.

You write street price of 4060 ti vs MSRP of 7800 XT. When seeing what will cost in real offers in EU... Maybe will be disappointed. I predict not less than MSRP+100€ or more.

Decent price for the 7800XT, 7700XT DOA, unfortunately looks like an upsale tactic.

7800XT looks to be well rounded, and might actually provide a good price/performance ratio.

Yep, decent pricing on the 7800 XT considering the current market. If the charts are to be believed, it should perform around a RTX 4070 for $100 cheaper and with 4GB more VRAM, more memory bandwidth, and much more cache.
