Grand Theft Auto 5 Source Code Leaked a Year After Rockstar Games Hack

An unknown group leaked the source code of Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) to the web. The group posted the source code up for downloads through media such as bit torrent. There is a dedicated Telegram channel for GTA leaks, in which the admin, who goes by "Phil," posted leaks to the alleged GTA 5 source code files, including screenshots of its root folder. He also paid homage to UK hacker Arion Kurtaj from the Lapsus$ group, which breached the networks of Rockstar Games in 2022. A UK Court last week sentenced Kurtaj, who is clinically diagnosed to be autistic, to be institutionalized indefinitely. The Telegram post by "Phil" shared not just links to the GTA 5 source code and screenshots, but also the hashtag "FreeArionKurtaj."

Think Rockstar needs to hire a new cybersecurity team.

I quite dislike Rockstar, I hope this shit keeps happening to them. The leak confirmed a ton of single player DLCs for GTA 5 and RDR2 were canceled because GTA Online was making so much money, I don't feel bad one second for them, they basically sold their soul and shoved everything aside to make slop for an entire decade. Screw them, it's corporations like these that are responsible for the asinine state gaming is in right now.

While they are free to hold up releases to maximize profits, stop releases to maximize profits, do everything in their power to maximize profits while having security so weak a autistic kid with a cell phone, fire stick and TV could hack them from a hotel room……

I am free to love the fact their lax security gave us a look under the hood to enable modding and evolutionarily development their profits got in the way of.

To me it’s like saying you can’t look in the black box under the hood of your car cause reasons….. don’t find security holes in things for reasons….. it makes no sense if I own the product.

Hopefully we will get proper multiplayer from the moders similar to SAMP or MTA

And it didn't go well, thus the leak.

No, the ones who committed the hack in the first place. They were just recently sentenced to prison and some feel the punishment was a bit harsh considering...

He did the hack while being on parole. That's the thing.

Such a clever little rat - now sentenced because of likely greed power abusement.

Not really the same thing, the equivalent would be using a decompiler/disassembler to reverse engineer the finalized game (which is also frequently done, companies like rockstar hate it but they can go fuck themselves). Stealling and publishing the source code is a different level of thievery.

I have no pity for them, maybe this kickstarts development of all those mods recreating the older games with the GTA5 engine that they DMCA'd before releasing the "remastered" collection. It certainly will throw a wrench into the money machine GTA Online still is.

It's like, this is clearly wrong and bad, but also fucking awesome!

I don't condone hacking, but I do agree with the opinion of Rockstar. GTA 5 and RDR2 both deserved decent single player expansions and DLC. With the money GTA Online was bringing in, why couldn't they expand their team to do both? Not everyone wants to play online. Have next to no respect for them anymore....

There is Always Moar
this changes nothing thanks to projects like fivem the code is very well understood and nearly completely reverse engineered

What I absolutely hate about Rockstar is that they simply don't give a fuck.
Ok, GTAO was making them tons of money, singleplayer got pushed aside, fine. BUT why did they NEVER fix the ridiculously bad security layer of GTAO that basically made multiplayer unplayable then? This is the very reason why I quit ages ago. I have better things to do with my time than getting instakilled over and over by some retard who downloaded a cheat program from somewhere and with a click of one button turns an entire session upside down. And using the invulnerable (or what is it called) mode majorly limits what you can do, so that's not a solution. And even that sometimes didn't help.

Really?

I used to make the same argument, and I still know it's true. I'm not condoning the hack, I'm not condoning the dump.

I'm simply stating a possibility of why it happened.

I don't mind Rockstar getting some bruises from this, though I know it probably won't matter in the long run.

This is what happens when you spend over a billion dollars on making a game instead of security.

And it would have taken less than $10million to deploy excellent security! Company execs never take IT seriously until AFTER sh!t hits the fan... Morons..
