Possible Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Sketch Surfaces

This could very well be what the elusive new PlayStation 5 console looks like. DeaLabs illustrated its design as part of its article compiling all rumored tech specs of the console. The console's body retains the essential design of the digital-only variant of PlayStation 5, and its refresh. The disc variant of PlayStation 5 has a crease accent running along its side panels, toward the top one-quarter. The PS5 Pro possibly has more crease accents in its place, possibly even serving as a set of air vents. This is only a 2-color illustration, which means the console could have a unique body color scheme, too.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is being designed for a nearly 2-3 times performance uplift over the original PlayStation 5, and its 6 nm mid-lifecycle refresh. AMD remains the SoC supplier for the PS5 Pro, and its chip is codenamed "Viola." This chip could be built on a more advanced foundry node than even the 6 nm "Oberon Plus" powering the PS5 (refresh). It is a semi-custom chip in the true sense, as it has a unique mix of AMD IP blocks from several generations.
The CPU of "Viola" remains based on the "Zen 2" microarchitecture, and is 8-core/16-thread, with a modest 300 MHz increase in CPU boost clocks to 3.85 GHz. Sony probably finds this CPU sufficient for its needs, and wants to minimize its die footprint when compared to opting for a newer CPU microarchitecture. The GPU is a mix of RDNA 3 and RDNA 4. The shader engines and stream processors in its compute units are based on RDNA 3, while it carries over the advanced ray tracing machinery of RDNA 4.

This could possibly mean two ray accelerators per CU, besides the ray accelerator itself being more specialized (i.e. less of the ray tracing workload is delegated to the shaders). Sony is also increasing the CU count from 36 on the "Oberon" SoC powering the original PS5, to 60. The chip features a 256-bit GDDR6 memory bus, and uses 16 GB of unified memory for both the CPU (system main memory) and iGPU (graphics memory). The memory speed is increased to 18 Gbps from 14 Gbps on the original PS5.

Dr. DroIt will likely use FSR 3. If the rumors about RDNA 4 adding a matrix multiplication unit are true (only took AMD over 6 full years), probably XeSS style image reconstruction techniques.

Money! Plenty of "gamers" excited for the next PlayStation because that's all they've ever known and all they've ever cared to know.
PS5 Pro uses PSSR, which is not FSR. In-house upscaling method that relies on RAM to function, hence why PS5 Pro has slightly more RAM.

TheDeeGeeWhat a surprise, it's a Router!
Yes, the famous Plash Speed router.

All of which are derived from FSR, since FSR is open source. Sony just likes to look like they're innovative, truth to be told, they're corporate incarnate these days.

I like one of the design concepts running around of the top panel sections above the ruffles/ridges being black, while the large bottom panels are white. If those ruffles/ridges are also vents for additional cooling, that would be nice too, with the hope that they use more/quieter fans behind them.

Yet we keep hearing they dont profit from the console sales.

I believe the PS5 has been profitable from the first unit built, the whole strategy of taking a loss on consoles and then making it up with royalties from software sales nearly bankrupted them in the past - plus with the rise of tiered subscription services such as Game Pass and PS Plus obviously reducing sales numbers (because consoles have largely stuck to an obsolete business model - the simple fact that there are still physical disc copies that serve as nothing but an authorization key because the game within them is obsolete and unplayable due to DRM locks/enforced data and system software updates or the fact it's simply missing a ton of game data speaks volumes), that business model is no longer viable.

Nowadays they make the bulk of money with the console itself and scamming console gamers $15 a month so they can play online.

No sarcastic question, but are there any new good quality games out there worth investing in a new PS??
Or even a new video card for that matter?

Considering you currently have an RTX 3080, no, none that your card can't already run masterfully well, at least up until 1440p resolution.

I agree they must be making a profit on them, it is only logical conclusion, otherwise the pro would make no sense.

PSSR is in-house tech built by Sony, has nothing to do with FSR. They said this officially.

I just read on it, hilarious. Such grand claims, it's only a shame I've been around long enough to remember it isn't the first time Sony has these delusions of grandeur

The day a console does 120 fps may come, but today is not that day - and the PS5 Pro is not gonna do anything to change that reality (or the hilariously poor quality titles they're releasing lately).

If you play 1080p, even 1440p in a few games, you don't even need the pro console to do it today ;)

Truthfully a lot of games would be able to do that if developers just released an update to unlock the frame rate to allow it but they just won't because there's no money on it. The greatest benefit of the pro console will probably be that there will be money to be made on updating the game to get the "optimized for ps5 pro" sticker and that will benefit both those who have the better console and those who keep the regular one.

Wondering if the marriage between Nvidia and Sony will ever return again. Maybe in the Ps6 who knows. Ps4 and Ps5 is impressive in graphics close up but distance graphics still the PS3 was king. Even today when I look at programmers that knew how to take full advantage of the PS3 cell and Nvidia RSX those games seem to look better than the newer console ones.
