Steam Sets New Record With Over 39 Million Concurrent Players, Some New Games Doing Well

Steam has set a new record of over 39 million concurrent players, breaking its earlier record of over 38 million set back in September. Some of the recently launched games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Marvel Rivals, and Path of Exile 2 are doing quite well.

As spotted by DSOGaming, the newest Steam record for concurrent players is set at 39,205,447. It took around three months to break the previous record of over 38 million concurrent players set back in September. When it comes to the list of most played games in the last 24 hours, Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 are still holding the top two places, but some recently launched games are also doing quite well.
Path of Exile 2 from Grinding Gear Games took third place, with an all-time peak of over 500k players. This does not come as a surprise considering that players have even managed to overwhelm the servers. Path of Exile 2 is currently also the top seller on Steam. Marvel Rivals also managed to get to the fourth place and this free-to-play game managed to get over 450k concurrent players. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Delta Force, and Baldur's Gate 3 are also on the list, getting a lot of attention on Steam.

evernessinceThere is no lock-in on steam. Nothing is stopping people from using other platforms other than the merits of steam itself. There are is even game aggregation software to combine all your game libraries from multiple store-fronts.

No, the reason steam is successful is because they are the only one's that have approached making a platform from the perspective of "how can we make this better" instead of "how can we make money". Not to say Valve is flawless of course, they are just the only one's actually trying. The rest are just trying to cash in.
I think this depends on how you define "lock-in". I have 1000 games associated with my Steam account so I will probably have the Steam client installed on my gaming devices for the rest of my life. You might call that lock-in.

On the other hand, I also have hundreds of games tied to my GOG account, and dozens more with Itch. I don't run any of their apps, and I still buy games from their stores. So in that sense I'm not locked into Steam. (I tried Playnite, and as slick as it is it was still too much hassle for me. I just download installer .exes from the GOG and Itch websites.)

I also have hundreds of games tied to my Epic account. They are all from the weekly giveaways. I never played them because I never installed the app. I'm waiting for their client to improve enough to bother using it, and until it does I'll never spend actual money with Epic. Valve is earning my money purely on the quality of their Steam client.

Having to get Steam in Total War Shogun 2 was not cool at the time. The first time I had to reset my PC I got a better appreciation for Steam.

DavenSteam wasn't the first digital store but they were the first worldwide digital gaming store with a decent size content library. I never heard of Stardock. Were they worldwide? How many games did they have in the catalog?
Steam didn't start out even as a digital store for selling games. It was just a platform for Vavle to use for updating games when it launched in 2003. I think it was almost a year or more after Steam even came out that it offered games for sale.

As for Stardock, they have the Galactic Civilization games under their name. They had a digital store that allowed the purchase of Galactic Civilization on it when the game released back in 2003, you could also take the key from your retail copy and apply to the Stardock platform to receive updates to the game. I don't see why you couldn't be somewhere else other than the US to buy the game online through their digital platform. A year so later they started to offer third-party games on the platform.

Fact of the matter is, Steam wasn't first. It was, however, the platform that resonated the most with people. I used both Stardock's platform and Steam back then. According to Steam I officially joined it December 14, 2004 (5 days from my 20th anniversary). I have, however, stopped using Steam to pay for digital games back in 2019 because I really hate the fact I'm just renting games, but that's a separate matter.

I think the first game I ever purchased digitally back then was a copy of Galactic Civilization 2 off Stardock's platform, which I eventually picked up a physical copy of the Gal Civ 2 Ultimate Edition that I still have to this day.

Eventually Stardock retired their first platform and released their next digital platform called "Impulse" sometime in 2008 which I remember using as a platform to link a few physical games I had to and one I remember specifically was Demigod (I had a physical copy of it). I can't recall if I purchased any games digitally on it except for Batman Arkham Asylum. I specifically remember downloading the game off that platform. I think the move from their original platform to Impulse was an attempt to get something better to compete with Steam, but it never was able to keep up. I do know that a handful of years later Gamestop purchased Impulse and they used it to get into the digital gaming side of things, but I had stopped using Impulse by then. I only kept Impulse installed for Gal Civ 2 and eventually the app was no longer supported...which was 10 or 12 years ago when Gamestop discontinued supporting it and moved to selling and the distribution of digital games through their own download application which Gamestop doesn't even supports in such a way anymore. Bottom line is, if you had digital games through these platforms they are lost to the ether. My understanding is you can buy digital games off Gamestop today, but they are for keys to Steam, they don't have a digital platform anymore.

EatingDirtMarvel Rivals is apparently practically Overwatch in the Marvel Universe and f2p, so it's numbers are not surprising. Have some friends trying that out, but I no longer find joy in PvP gameplay, so it's not for me.

It's not actually f2p right now($30, with $30 equivalent of in game microtransaction $), so it's numbers are a bit more surprising. I myself was one of the 578,000 people playing Path of Exile over the weekend, playing what frankly was entirely too much. Great game already, looking forward to more classes, skills and the last 3 chapters of the campaign set to release throughout 2025.
I still prefer Overwatch over Marvel. The game is too chaotic to enjoy while teams can be completely unbalanced. Maybe they will implement the 1 tank 3 dps and 2 healer rule later.

ImoutoMaybe it isn't a kernel level anticheat? The game works on Linux with all that means.

Besides the behavior would be retarded even for Windows. Does it ask for admin privileges to install that?
You need to allow admin privileges to start the launcher or you get a "Failed to start process for this game" error

I miss impulse. Got it for Sins of a Solar empire's bonus, which was a Sins themes windows desktop for windows 7. Which was friggin amazing. I also bought both Demigod and Supreme commander forged alliances through Impulse, along with a few other games. It was genuinely good, worked without internet far better then Steam did, which was a big deal for me at the time with spotty "borrowed" wifi. Impulse didnt have annoying DRM associated with it, as stardock's CEO at the time was very anti DRM.

Stardock really screwed up by selling it to gamestop, and losing those purchases is what woke me to the fact that digital purchases are not "ownership". They should have kept it, but this was ALSO a wake up call that Stardock had become a terrible publisher that dropped their software constantly. Half the reason Openshell existed was because Stardock kept dropping versions of Start 8/10/11 and required you to purchase a new license for every PC.

(BTW, if anyone has this app pack for mycolors, I will happily reward you the bounty, I've been looking for it for years, and while I have the old mycolors downloaded, I dont have this : ( )
