AMD Radeon RX 9070 Series Launch Event Slated for Late-February

AMD is planning a media event to formally launch the Radeon RX 9070 series next-generation graphics cards some time in late-February 2024, VideoCardz reports. The company could simultaneously announce the flagship Radeon RX 9070 XT, its second-best RX 9070, and new stuff on the software side, such as FSR 4, although availability dates of each could vary. Availability of at least the top RX 9070 XT could be expected in March, the report says. Both the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are being prepared by AMD as performance-segment products, where they probably go up against SKUs from NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5070 series. Given the rather minor performance uplift the RTX 5080 yielded over its previous generation predecessor, the performance segment is in for some competition.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are both based on the 4 nm "Navi 48" silicon, which reportedly features 64 compute units for 4,096 stream processors, and a new generation AI accelerator that's both faster and more capable than the one introduced with RDNA 3. There is expected to be a significant uplift in the ray tracing performance, too, reducing the performance cost of enabling ray tracing in games. FSR 4 is expected to leverage the AI acceleration capabilities of RDNA 4 for its super resolution algorithm. Both SKUs are expected to have all 64 CU enabled, but differ in clock speeds. Both are expected to feature 16 GB of older GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface. As for the media event, we gathered from our post-CES roundtable with AMD that the event will at least be an online presentation.

Well, if they can 1. have actual stock at retailers, 2. actually improve on last gen for real, not just on paper, 3. not have the cards brick themselves, then it will still be a better launch than the rtx 5000.

AMD already said they are not releasing a high-end card so it won't be faster than 7900. I'm not sure what anyone is waiting for unless they were thinking of a 7800 to begin with.

i would like to test that newest gpu if that come faster than RTX 5060 ou 5060 ti will be great option to medium tier of new GPU, my RTX 3070 i paid $1300 in 2021 now if some come ~$ 450 great price for 16GB VRAM or more.

Wouldn't it be a kick if AMD were using their own and Nvidia hardware to create FSR4

I wouldn't call it better, but "on par". Shitshow launches all around this year... perhaps Intel will do better still

People always do this.

Hell, the damned influencers keep doing this with the 7900 XTX.

AMD never said it competed with the 4090 but what do they do? Match it against the damned 4090...

And of course, when it loses, all AMD GPU's are trash.

So they are setting this one up for the same results.

Then again, is not like AMD marketing always do their fair share of damage.

I guess AMD should be able to use the already released 5080/5090 performance as a baseline to calculate the 5070/5070Ti performance. They also have the 5070/5070Ti pricing. There should be no barriers for them to release RDNA4 as far as product placement based on the competition goes.

Nvidia set a pretty low bar with the 5000 launch. Lol!

I predict that the 9070 will equal the 7900XT and the 9070XT will equal the 7900XTX for rasterization performance.

Pretty obvious now, considering how bad Nvidia's GPUs are, why they priced the 5070 unexpectedly lower than what we were anticipating.

The AMD delay is looking more like ...
-Let's build up more supply
-Adjust the price
-Fine tune the drivers and FSR 4

because there is no need to rush, the 5070 is most likely garbage.

NVIDIA and AMD playing hot potato and the only losers are us, left with barely existent stocks of highly overpriced and underwhelming hardware.

Launch or event to simply talk about the RDNA4 architecture? If we're lucky, they'll show the performance in a minimally realistic setting.

This card literally can't lose as long as its priced correctly. This is an easy lay up for AMD. Some how I'm worried LOL ....

I suppose that is part of why they went with 9070 & 9070XT for the names; they really hope that reviewers get the memo and directly compare them to the 5070 & 5070Ti respectively.

AMD really can't settle on a naming convention. Using "9070" instead of "9700" is roughly the 6th big convention change in 11 generations. Nvidia's last convention change was going from "1060" to "1660" and "2060," and arguably that wasn't a change.

I think AMD was very clever in delaying their launch, they no doubt found out about the supply shortage/prices, letting nGreedia put themselves in extremely bad light. (Let them cook)

Where they won't have the supply issue, if their GPUs delivery this time around for the price performance, which I think will happen as with their CPUs/Intel history, they will be hailed as conquering heroes. I am actually looking forward to see what happens from their corner. <3

hd8000 series existed but was a oem only rebrand because they didn't have anything new. and currently without the rx the 8000 series is strix halo. Which is rdna3.5.

That being said, for the most part radeon has not been very consistent with their naming. except for the hd series

Yeah and Nvidia said the 5080 is faster than the 4080, and it's only better by a few percent, so I'm not sure why anyone was waiting for that either. But hey, you do you.

The Radeon group never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity... I'm hoping (maybe coping) so hard that they price it correctly and hit a slam dunk but if the past is anything to go by they're going to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Fingers crossed it turns out well though, the scene desperately needs a new "for the masses" card a la RX4/580.

They did alright with the 6800XT, i actually tried to buy one and i couldn't get one. They were no where to be found and that blew up in their face. If people would have been able to get their hands on the card i believe it would have sold very well.

I wonder if it will be as fast as a 7900xtx in raster but with better RT, or if I should just consider 7900xtx right now.

"Both SKUs are expected to have all 64 CU enabled, but differ in clock speeds" - any source on this? So far, this is the only such claim I've seen.
