TwinMOS to Shutter Business Due to Dropping DRAM Pricing

Taiwan-based TwinMOS Technologies, the memory manufacturer that became popular with its DDR memories equipped with the legendary Winbond BH-5 chips, is reportedly to close down its business on April 15th. According to DigiTimes, TwinMOS has searched for opportunities towards acquisition and has tried to reorganize its operational structure, however, the continuing DRAM price drops are forcing the company to shut down the business. Most of TwinMOS' employees have already switched to work for NAND Flash module maker Silicon-Power Computer. Although the scale of investment to establish a memory module plant is not huge, ongoing operational upkeep needs large amounts of cash. With the DRAM industry in a slump, the battle is on to see how many more companies fall, commented industry watchers.

In the future you might want to learn how to write a news story with your own words rather than using ctrl+c and ctrl+v. I thought TechPowerUp had higher standards than this....

Oh so you surf tons of news sites and look for this stuff huh? I dont think half of us would be up to date with this stuff w/o malware. Plus who has time to look at a ton of news sites?

Or what DaedalusHelios said :p

Its called a press release. You are supposed to basically copy and paste it.

Thats what journalists do. Are you saying we should expect malware to write an editorial about every piece of news?

He's a news reporter, not a novelist. His job is to bring us the news. If you want to read beautifully written articles, write em yourself or go read some poetry.

I thought users had higher standards than to bitch about who wrote the news story. Stay on topic or don't respond at all. If you have complaints about these things there is a comment and feedback forum. Then again I figured you'd already knew that with your towering standards.

On topic; I wasn't aware Twinmos was doing bad.

Its really unfortunate, there is so much competition in the DRAM market atm... prices are just flying to the floor, DDR3 decent kits are actually becoming cheap now....

I've just given lostswede a +1. Why?

Because he made a comment that then received 5 reactionary members hitting the guy on the head. I've no idea who lostswede is, but quite honestly, one criticism is enough without the whole team ganging up against the guy. Actually, the responses written by some of us old timers is itself against the TPU posting standards we set outselves. And if we disagree with lostswede, thats fine, but we shouldnt start a personal attack. And I find that "crediting" the gang behaviour with thanks rather narcistic.

Regarding the CTL C+P comment, I think TPU news should differentiate between copy+paste and actual editorial. I DO RECOMMEND putting copy+paste in "quote /quote" s. Why not design a news quote system like we have for forum quote, code snippet, etc. It would solve the problem once and for all.

TheLostSwede if you can come with something better than me, please proceed.
I've been reporting news for you for at least 3 years, every day. I'm not William Shakespeare, I don't have the time to write 10 or more news stories a day and write them as everyone here wants to. If you can, please...I'll stop writing. It's a lot easier to say "I don't like your writings" with 31 posts, isn't it?

P.S. Let me just say, that besides looking at the site' mail, my personal mail (overall above 100 mails a day), I have to check every news site I know, define which news you'll like, sometimes write between 12-15 posts a day, and above this all I'm a human being, I'm a student, I have a job and have to go to work every day, I'm editor of the biggest computer magazine in my country, plus I have a personal life...and last but not least there's no one besides me to help with writing or whatsoever. You want me to come every day with a genius news post for you, this can't be done my friend...sorry.

coincidently i read today an article on digitimes about dram makers in taiwan thinking its time for a price hike here;
www.digitimes.com/bits_chips/a20080409PD204.html

out of curiousity im wondering if this story is related to twinMOS shutting down, the last time i recall a memory price jump was when a significant number of ram companies all went out of business about five years ago.
on another note, post irrelevent posts in another thread not the news threads so i and many others dont have to scroll past a bunch of posts just to get back onto the OP's TOPIC ..
kthx.

I haven't had good experiences with TwinMOS in the past (a stick of RAM went bad after only about 20~30 minutes of use), so I guess their shoddy QA/QC finally came back to bite them. I'm not sorry to see them go, as there are still plenty of other RAM manufacturers around with better products.

Wow, that kind of sucks. Itd be awesome if they could bring them Winbond BH-5s to ddr2 and ddr3 flavors. Id definitely scoop some up.

Theres no need for you to apologize - if he doesn't like your news postings then thats his problem. the only thing that matters is that you give credit to the source that you ctrl c+P'd the news from - if the guy who wrote the post@ the source thinks that HIS post is good enough for the public then that is good enough for us all - we're all the same just because some of us have a higher status on this site or the right to post in the news section is reserved for certain people means nothing - you do a fucking great job balancing out your personal life, work & this site so fuck anyone else who thinks any less of who you are or what you do.

If you dont like it then dont read it, if you dont have anything good to say then dont say anything at all unless its in the nonsense part of the forum where your posts officially dont count.

i changed up from slower ddr2 to faster but dropped the amount by a gig, from 3 to 2
still runs almost the same, cept now my pc boots like crazy
ive had no personal experiance with twinMOS, but hope that the likes of elixer and other shoddy makers go oob soon haha
if u were sticking to good brands then this isnt really relevant news unless it affects the competition, making the good brands pricier

Personally....having actually used Elixer ram extensively for a period of time (i had 2x512Mb in my back up rig which is now ramless as i sold all the ram when i was hard on cash) I would say their far from shoddy - the PC3200 modules i had running could run way past their stated stock speed I have the ram up to 230/240mhz or something. I still got the screenies somewhere. they maybe not as special as say OCZ or Corsair 'Value Select' but when i bought them almost over a year ago they were pretty cheap.

cheap ram + overclockable cheap ram = :rockout::rockout::rockout::rockout::rockout::rockout::rockout:

its my opinion that elixer is shoddy and i wont be swayed otherwise, everyone has their own personal opinion when it comes to brands of hardware, and for me any time ive delt with someones pc that has elixer it fails memory tests most of the time around and commonly is a cause of the problem for them to have me looking at it in the first place, this may be a lack of maintainance or bad choice of psu killing ram but elixer have never seemd to me to be memory which lasts long or is considerd reliable, just like laser and hon-li products, i dont think much of these or even liteon, as i have had plenty of experience with these products and with elixer which left me far from anywhere near impressed.

im happy tho to hear that someone has had a good run with elixer, my business sells it from time to time and maybe its not so bad to sell if the failure rate of it is less so then what i thought.

well i can only speak from my personal experience & from what ive heard - but ive never heard them to be as bad as you describe them to be - but obviously if i had the money id rather go for a well known brand then Elixir.
