Sony PLAYSTATION2 Goes Down to $99 Tomorrow

The official PLAYSTATION blog posted today that as of next month the second generation Sony PLAYSTATION game console will be sold for as low as $99 MSRP, down from $129. PLAYSTATION 2 recently sold 50 million units in North America, and now the console is cheaper than ever. First released almost nine years ago in year 2000, the PS2 is still loyal to its owners. To date the console offers over 1900 game titles as well as some of the latest games such as MLB '09, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Guitar Hero Metallica and MotorStorm: Arctic Edge.
The new price sounds almost too good to be true, but let us remind you that tommorow is April fools' day.

Maybe I'll keep an eye on their prices then, the old one is a tank, and half of it is empty space

I'm not impressed. These days you can virtually buy a PC capable of emulating Playstation 2 for 100$.

They are everywhere. They are the PS2 silver and black slims, and are currently in production and sold in stores. Sony contemplated cutting them off to help the PS3 in the first generations when they had ps2/1 compatibility, but they later cut that compatibility because of costs.

And sony is still asking too much for the PS3, maybe it would be worth it if some good games came out for it..

I'll toss in my two cents. While living in Argentina for 3 months, the console to own was a PS2. They had a few Xbox 360s in a pay-as-you-play arcade, but other than that, everyone who could afford to have a PS2 had one. PS3s are illegal to sell because Sony hasn't officially released it yet. While I was there at least, worldwide, PS2 sales outnumbered PS3 sales.

Of course, me being who I am, I went to the pay-as-you-play arcade and tore shit up on Guitar Hero III on expert, and I had Argentinians left and right cheering me on. I drew such a crowd, they started letting me play for free and wanted to know when I was going to be there playing to advertise me being in there :p

Hopefully this price cut means new ones will go for around the $79.99 on special.

And Microsoft is asking too much for the Xbox360, $400 for either one is insane, but at least the PS3 offers more features. I think they have both been out long enough to be at the $300 mark.

What!?!?!? You can get a brand new Xbox 360 for $200, and buy a second hand 20GB HDD for like $25 and be able to run anything. Where are you getting your figures

Features? It's a game console. Mine just sits under my TV doing nothing unless there's the occasional game we rent. I think they are all overpriced honestly. They don't do nearly half as much a gaming PC can.

To get a comparable Xbox360 new, is $400. And a 20GB HDD is not enough, at least it wasn't for me, it filled up very quickly. And even then, I have to go out and buy a wireless adaptor for $100, and a Play and Charge kit for $20.

Or if I go with the $200 Arcade console, I still have to put out $100 for the 60GB HDD and another $100 for the Wireless Adaptor, and another $20 a Play and Charge kit.

We can talk about used figures, but they aren't really useful, I've found used PS3's for under $300, and they usually come with games and extra accessories. I'm talking new prices, what you would have to put out if you walked in the store today and bought everything new.

Then you are missing out, there are a lot of things the PS3 can do, some of them even involve gaming, and you probably use them and not even think about it.

A wireless connection for starts, something the PS3 comes with, but the Xbox360 doesn't.

The ability to use any USB cable to charge the controllers, with no need to buy an extra accessory to charge the controller, and the PS3 comes with the USB cable to boot. Hell, for the $20 I had to put out for a Play and Charge kit, I bought a 15 ft. USB cable to charge my PS3 controller, so I charge it while sitting on my couch in my living room if I want, something I actually can't do with my Play and Charge kit because the cable is too short.
