ASUS Eee Box Sheds its Fans

The new Eee Box EB1037 from ASUS is the company's first completely fan-less nettop in the series. It's part of the company's new 2014 Eee PC series, and offers an impressive new hardware feature-set, compared to its humble Atom N270 beginnings.

The EB1037 runs an Intel Celeron J1900 SoC, with a quad-core x86-64 CPU clocked at 2.42 GHz; up to 8 GB of DDR3 memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 820M graphics with 512 MB dedicated memory, HDD options ranging from 320 GB to 1 TB, and SSD options ranging between 64 GB and 128 GB. On the connectivity front, you get a 4-in-1 card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and display outputs that include HDMI and D-Sub. Prices start at 299€.

Update (7th Feb, 2014): It turns out that the EeeBox EB1037 does indeed have a small fan over the CPU+PCH combination block, ASUS clarified.

ASUS ThunderboltEX II Add-on Thunderbolt 20 Gbps Cards Now Available

ASUS rolled out second-generation add-on Thunderbolt cards for its motherboards, the ThunderboltEX II series. It includes the single-port ThunderboltEX II, and the two-port ThunderboltEX II DUAL. The two are based on Intel's DSL5320 and DSL5520 chipsets, respectively, and support the Thunderbolt 2.0 standard, which offers 20 Gb/s of bandwidth over a single cable.

The cards aren't completely independent, and can't just be plugged into any motherboard with a PCI-Express 2.0 x4/x16 slot. It requires a special header that's used for timing, and low-level system interface, and optionally, an end-to-end DisplayPort (if you want to relay display from your graphics card through the common Thunderbolt pipe). A list of compatible motherboards can be found on the product page.

ASUS Unveils the RT-AC52U Wireless Router with the USB-AC50 Wireless Adapter

ASUS today announced RT-AC52U with USB-AC50, an AC750 dual-band router and AC450 wireless adapter package that provides consumers with an extremely affordable instant upgrade to the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology - for super-fast data-transfer speeds of up to 733 Mbit/s.

RT-AC52U provides simultaneous Wi-Fi connections via both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and includes a specially-designed antenna that extends the wireless signal by up to 150% compared to other routers. The new router includes a multipurpose USB port that allows users to connect and share a printer, hard disk drive or 3G/4G (HSPA+) data connection. It can even be used to charge mobile gadgets such as smartphones and tablets - a brilliant little convenience.

ASUS GeForce GTX 750 Ti "Maxwell" Sees First Listing

Way ahead of its rumored February 18 launch, a Hungarian online retailer listed an ASUS-branded GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics card, bearing model number GTX750TI-OC-2GD5. The card is listed at a tax-inclusive price of 50,000 HUF (around US $225), which is rather steep, even for a pre-order, given the positioning of the card, in relation to existing products, such as the GTX 660 and GTX 760. The naming suggests that the card is factory-overclocked, which means that NVIDIA will allow factory-overclocked, and possibly custom design GTX 750 Ti cards from day-one. It also gives away the memory of the card, at 2 GB GDDR5. The listing, however, doesn't go with any pictures.

NVIDIA Rolls Out G-Sync Upgrade Kit for ASUS VG248QE

NVIDIA rolled out an upgrade kit that lets you retrofit your ASUS VG248QE monitor with NVIDIA G-Sync technology, letting you take advantage of the display's up to 144 Hz refresh rate for some incredibly smooth visuals (we've seen G-Sync in action ourselves, and it works like it should). The kit is a PCB with a handful of headers. You can either retrofit it into the monitor's body yourself (a DIY video is posted). The G-Sync kit is priced at US $199.

ASUS Z87-Deluxe/SATA-Express Detailed

ASUS released a prototype of the first desktop PC motherboard with SATA-Express support, the Z87-Deluxe/SATA-Express. A variant of ASUS' flagship socket LGA1150 motherboard from its mainline Z87 series, the Z87-Deluxe, the board features two SATA-Express ports. SATA-Express sees a fusion between two of the most successful serial I/O interfaces, SATA and PCI-Express. It's essentially ATA over PCI-Express 2.0 x2, which offers a raw bandwidth of 8 Gbps per direction, 16 Gbps total. The SATA-Express port is structured similar to the classic SATA port, with PCI-Express lanes running over two 7-pin SATA connectors, and an additional block of 4 pins that make up the 18 pins required by 2-lane PCI-Express. A SATA-Express connector is thus unified, and legacy SATA devices should still be able to run off one of the two 7-in SATA connectors in a SATA-Express block.

Since there are no SATA-Express drives in the market, ASUS gave TweakTown a MacGyver contraption that adapts SATA-Express to a physical PCI-Express 2.0 x4 slot (electrical x2). An ASUS RAIDR Express PCI-Express SSD was found to offer sequential transfer rates of around 750 MB/s on ATTO. The rest of the board is practically identical to the Z87-Deluxe. The board uses a 16-phase VRM to condition power for the LGA1150 CPU. It draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS connectors. Expansion slots include three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (x16/NC/NC or x8/x8/NC or x8/x4/x4, depending on how they're populated); and four PCI-Express 2.0 x1 slots.

New EK Water Block in the Making for the ASUS Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II OC

EK Water Blocks, Ljubljana based premium water cooling gear manufacturer, is working on a new Full Cover water block for the latest ASUS non-reference design DirectCU II series AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card, namely the R9290X-DC2OC-4GD5.

The upcoming EK-FC R9-290X DCII will be a high performance full-cover water block for engineered specifically for the latest revision of ASUS design Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II series graphics cards. This product will directly cool the GPU, RAM as well as VRM (voltage regulation module) as water will flow directly over these critical areas thus allowing the graphics card and its VRM to remain stable under high overclocks.

ASUS Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II OC Launched

ASUS announced its Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II series graphics cards, which include a model that sticks to AMD-reference clocks (up to 1000 MHz core, 5.00 GHz memory), and one that offers factory-overclocked speeds of up to 1050 MHz core, and 5.40 GHz memory, the DirectCU II OC. The card features a completely non-reference design, with a PCB designed in-house by ASUS, which features a 10-phase VRM, which draws power from a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The features Samsung-made GDDR5 memory chips. There's 4 GB of memory on board, across a 512-bit wide memory interface.

The DirectCU II cooling solution is nearly identical to the one deployed on the recently launched GeForce GTX 780 Ti DirectCU II OC. It features a large aluminium fin-stack heatsink to which heat is fed by 8 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes. The heatsink is ventilated by a pair of 92 mm fans, one of which features ASUS's unique lateral+axial hybrid impeller, called CoolTech. Niceties include a back-plate, and an all-black cooler shroud, with sheets of red and gold stickers, so you could style the card the way you want to. The card is expected to be priced as low as 499€.

ASUS ROG Announces Poseidon GTX 780 Graphics Card

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced Poseidon GTX 780 with DirectCU H2O, a new graphics card with an exclusive hybrid thermal solution that enables extremely efficient cooling by either air or water.

The new card is powered by the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 GPU (graphics-processing unit). With DirectCU H2O on board offering users the unique ability to cool either by air or water, ROG Poseidon GTX 780 achieves running temperatures that are up to 24°C lower than reference designs - that's up to 140% cooler for gaming performance that's up to 12% faster in both Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and BattleField 4.

VIA Sues ASUS Group Companies and Executives for Damages

Following the decision by the Taiwan Prosecutor to pursue criminal proceedings against a subsidiary of Asustek Computer, Inc. (TSE: 2357) and four of that subsidiary's employees for the alleged misappropriation of trade secrets from VIA Technologies, Inc. (TSE: 2388), VIA today announced that it has filed a civil suit in the Taipei District Court seeking damages of at least NT$4.137 billion (US$138 million) from Asustek Computer, Inc and its subsidiary Asmedia Technology.

The lawsuit is being filed to recover the losses incurred as a result of the alleged misappropriation of VIA intellectual property related to USB technology. Also named in the suit are Asmedia Chairman Jerry Shen, Asmedia President Lin Chewei, and other Asmedia employees involved in the case.

"As a long-time leader in IC design and technology innovation, VIA strongly believes in the importance of protecting intellectual property rights," commented Wenchi Chen, CEO of VIA Technologies, Inc. "In addition to protecting interests of VIA and our shareholders, the aim of this suit is to ensure our industry operates in a healthy market environment that fosters innovation and promotes fair competition."

ASUS Announces GTX 780 Ti DirectCU II Graphics Card

ASUS today announced GTX 780 Ti DirectCU II, a graphics card powered by the new GeForce GTX 780 Ti graphics-processing unit (GPU) and fitted with exclusive DirectCU II technology for cooler, quieter and faster performance.

The GeForce GTX 780 Ti GPU is powered by 25% more CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores and benefits from a boosted clock speed of 1020 MHz - both significant increases on its predecessor that enable ASUS GTX 780 Ti to deliver astonishing gaming performance.

ASUS Includes Red and Gold Color Highlights with GTX 780 Ti DCU2 Graphics Card

Sick of the red and black color scheme yet? Can put up with black and gold? Like to keep things all-black? ASUS wants you to choose. The company decided to package its GeForce GTX 780 Ti DirectCU II series with sheets of red and gold stickers, and an all-black graphics card, so you can pick a scheme that goes best with the rest of the system. The black and gold scheme should match the color scheme of ASUS' latest Z87 series motherboards, while the red and black scheme should go best with its ROG series motherboards.

SilverStone Raven RVZ01 Pictured Some More

Ahead of its launch, SilverStone posted pictures of the new Raven RVZ01 mini-ITX gaming case. Built in the flat-bed design, the RVZ01 makes use of PCIe risers to orient the graphics card along the plane of its base. There's enough room for a sub-15 cm dual-slot graphics card, such as ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU Mini or the MSI GTX 760 Gaming-ITX it inspired; a standard ATX power supply; a slot-in slimline optical drive; and a number of 2.5/3.5-inch drives. SilverStone didn't reveal availability information, but we're still hopeful of a 2013 launch.

ASUS Shows Off Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II Graphics Card

ASUS has today confirmed that it is building a custom-cooled Radeon R9 290X card by showcasing the upcoming R9 290X DirectCU II. Seen below, ASUS' card makes use of Super Alloy Power technology to deliver more stable voltage and overclocking performance, is equipped with a PCB strengthening bracket and is paired up with a beefy cooler boasting two fans (including one CoolTech spinner) and four nickel-plated heatpipes (two are 10 mm pipes).

ASUS is still working on the R9 290X DirectCU II so there may be some changes for the release version. No word yet on a launch plan.

ASUS ROG Poseidon Graphics Card Pictured Some More

Here are some more pictures of ASUS' Republic of Gamers Poseidon graphics card, after its unofficial unveiling last week. SweClockers scored a few interesting tidbits about the card, which is being exhibited at DreamHack, Europe's biggest gaming event. The biggest news of them all is the chip underneath that hot-rod cooler - it's a GeForce GTX 780, and not a GTX 780 Ti, meaning that it offers just 2,304 CUDA cores and 192 TMUs, and not the 2,880 CUDA cores and 240 TMUs of the GTX 780 Ti. The card is expected to come with a minor factory-overclock (not disclosed), but large overclocking headroom backed by not just its 10-phase Digi+ VRM, but also its cooling solution, which fuses an aluminium fin-stack heatsink with a full-coverage liquid cooling channel.
