The EU Proposes New Mobile Device Regulation to Extend Product Life Time

Around 20 years ago, most people replaced their phones on a yearly basis in some countries, largely due to the fact that if you signed the right mobile service contract, you got a free phone. These days, it's not nearly as common to get a free device with your service, but then again, mobile service contracts also tend to cost much less these days in many countries. As such, people retain their devices longer, which has put the device upgrade cycle somewhere around the two or three year mark. Now the EU is proposing new regulations that will force the mobile device makers to re-think the current status quo, as the European Commission regulators are considering asking mobile device makers to offer not just better battery life, but also spare part availability for as long as five years after a device was launched.

When it comes to battery life, the EU Commission is intending to offer the device manufacturers two options. The first is that they'll have to offer batteries that can deliver 83 percent of their rated capacity after 500 charging cycles, followed by 80 percent capacity after 1000 charging cycles. Alternatively, they can offer replacement batteries and phone back covers to its end-user customers, so they can replace their batteries once the batteries no longer hold charge that meets the owners expectations.

Lenovo Unveils New Consumer IdeaPads and Tabs for 2023

Today's consumers need more out of their personal technology to thrive in the world of hybrid work and learning. While portability and mobility are key, the other side of this reality is that the hybrid worker and student are spending less time in offices and classrooms, and more time at home. This evolving consumer behavior has inspired Lenovo's new personal devices designed for the modern family, including Lenovo's first 16-inch Chromebook, the new Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Chromebook, and two new additions to its premium Lenovo Tab P11 tablet lineup: the Lenovo Tab P11 (2nd Gen) and the decked-out Lenovo Tab P11 Pro (2nd Gen).

The sudden switch to remote work and learning two years ago quickly increased people's reliance on technology, but it also ushered in a new and improved wave of remote everything - fitness, concerts, cinema, cooking, even dance parties. People learned to do everything they used to go out for, right in their own homes using their technology. Signs point to those behaviors persisting past the pandemic as consumers plan to spend more time on hobbies like home improvement and many expressing intentions of cooking at home more.

Intel Data-Center GPU Flex Series "Arctic Sound-M" Launched: Visual Processing, Media, and Inference top Applications

Intel today launched its Arctic Sound M line of data-center GPUs. These are not positioned as HPC processors like the "Ponte Vecchio," but GPUs targeting cloud-compute providers, with their main applications being in the realm of visual processing, media, and AI inferencing. Their most interesting aspect has to be the silicon, which are the same 6 nm "ACM-G11" and "ACM-G10" chips powering the Arc "Alchemist" client graphics cards, based on the Xe-HPG architecture. Even more interesting is their typical board power values, ranging between 75 W to 150 W. The cards are built in the PCI-Express add-on card form-factor, with their cooling solutions optimized for rack airflow.

The marketing name for these cards is simply Intel Data Center GPU Flex, with two models being offered: The Data Center GPU Flex-140, and Flex-170. The Flex-170 is a full-sized add-on card based on the larger ACM-G10 silicon, which has 32 Xe Cores (4,096 unified shaders), whereas the Flex-140, interestingly, is a low-profile dual-GPU card with two smaller ACM-G11 chips that each has 8 Xe Cores (1,024 unified shaders). The two chips appear to be sharing a PCIe bridge chip in the renders. Both models come with four Xe Media Engines that pack AV1 encode hardware-acceleration, XMX AI acceleration, real-time ray tracing, and GDDR6 memory.
