Microsoft Adds New Game-centric Features to Universal Windows Platform

Microsoft added two new features to its Universal Windows Platform (UWP), the company's non-Win32 application environment built around the Windows Store and modern UI. With the latest update to Windows 10, Microsoft updated UWP to support adaptive-sync technologies such as NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync; and removed frame-rate limits. Games built on UWP (such as "Quantum Break") suffered from frame-rate caps.

UWP continues to be criticized for taking a "walled-garden" approach to third-party apps, restricting them to Microsoft APIs such as DirectX. The platform continues to suffer from several limitations for games, such as support for APIs such as OpenGL and Vulkan; and proprietary multi-GPU technologies such as SLI and CrossFire; or support for game-mods.

AMD Announces FreeSync, Promises Fluid Displays More Affordable than G-SYNC

AMD today officially announced FreeSync, an open-standard technology that makes video and games look more fluid on PC monitors, with fluctuating frame-rates. A logical next-step to V-Sync, and analogous in function to NVIDIA's proprietary G-SYNC technology, FreeSync is a dynamic display refresh-rate technology that lets monitors sync their refresh-rate to the frame-rate the GPU is able to put out, resulting in a fluid display output.

FreeSync is an evolution of V-Sync, a feature that syncs the frame-rate of the GPU to the display's refresh-rate, to prevent "frame tearing," when the frame-rate is higher than refresh-rate; but it is known to cause input-lag and stutter when the GPU is not able to keep up with refresh-rate. FreeSync works on both ends of the cable, keeping refresh-rate and frame-rates in sync, to fight both page-tearing and input-lag.

Philips 272G5DYEB 27-Inch G-SYNC Monitor Arriving This Month

MMD, the leading technology company and brand license partner for Philips Monitors, announces a superb new monitor for true gaming fans: the 27-inch Philips 272G5DYEB display with NVIDIA G-SYNC. With a refresh rate of 144 Hz, this display updates the screen content nearly two and a half times more often than a standard monitor. By letting the GPU control the refresh, it delivers ultra-smooth image motion that includes the critical images that are otherwise missing on displays with standard refresh rates. So players can target objects more accurately - and level up their game.

NVIDIA G-SYNC - groundbreaking display technology
One drawback of gaming with a standard monitor, at least for serious gamers, is the lower refresh rate, which can make objects appear to jump suddenly from one spot to another on the display. The NVIDIA G-SYNC chipset is designed for gamers who are looking for a display that can game just as hard and fast as they can. The Philips 272G5DYEB NVIDIA G-SYNC monitor, with its advanced graphics support, is more than a match for the sharp, fast responses of experienced gamers. It redraws the screen image up to 144 times per second, making objects less likely to jump around and easier to target accurately.

NVIDIA Sacrifices VESA Adaptive Sync Tech to Rake in G-SYNC Royalties

NVIDIA's G-SYNC technology is rivaled by AMD's project Freesync, which is based on a technology standardized by the video electronics standards association (VESA), under Adaptive Sync. The technology lets GPUs and monitors keep display refresh rates in sync with GPU frame-rates, so the resulting output appears fluid. VESA's technology does not require special hardware inside standards-compliant monitors, and is royalty-free, unlike NVIDIA G-SYNC, which is based on specialized hardware, which display makers have to source from NVIDIA, which makes it a sort of a royalty.

When asked by Chinese publication Expreview on whether NVIDIA GPUs will support VESA adaptive-sync, the company mentioned that NVIDIA wants to focus on G-SYNC. A case in point is the display connector loadout of the recently launched GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970. According to specifications listed on NVIDIA's website, the two feature DisplayPort 1.2 connectors, and not DisplayPort 1.2a, a requirement of VESA's new technology. AMD's year-old Radeon R9 and R7 GPUs, on the other hand, support DisplayPort 1.2a, casting a suspicion on NVIDIA's choice of connectors. Interestingly, the GTX 980 and GTX 970 feature HDMI 2.0, so it's not like NVIDIA is slow at catching up with new standards. Did NVIDIA leave out DisplayPort 1.2a in a deliberate attempt to check Adaptive Sync?
