GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop-Powered Morefine G1 eGPU Unveiled With Compact Chassis

Morefine is a relatively reputed brand of mini PCs that we have covered in the past. The company has now introduced a powerful new eGPU dubbed the G1, which can also function as a dock, courtesy of its healthy selection of ports. The eGPU can be equipped with the RTX 4060 Laptop, RTX 4080 Laptop, or even the RTX 4090 Laptop GPUs. The product is already available for purchase, with prices starting from $659 for the RTX 4060 L variant, $1,099 for the RTX 4080 L variant, and the highest-end RTX 4090 Laptop variant is unfortunately out of stock as of this writing, which otherwise carries a price tag of $1,699.

For those who need a refresher, the RTX 4060 Laptop packs 3,072 CUDA cores paired with 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, allowing for performance that is roughly in the same league as the Radeon RX 7600M GPU found in many other eGPUs. The RTX 4080 Laptop and RTX 4090 Laptop GPUs pack 7,424 and 9,728 CUDA cores coupled with 12 and 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM respectively. Morefine has revealed the 3D Mark scores for each of the systems, which is certainly a good thing for prospective buyers. The 14 x 10 x 5.4 cm chassis is impressively compact, and as mentioned previously, the ports on offer are equally impressive. An OCuLink port is provided, along with Thunderbolt 3 (85W PD), which can swapped with a dual USB-C module for folks with systems that cannot take advantage of OCuLink. Other ports include triple USB-A 3.2, dual HDMI 2.1, and DisplayPort 1.4 ports.

Human Error Reportedly Caused Latest 12VHPWR Cable Melting Incident

Late last month, NVIDIA claimed that 16-pin power connector issues were a thing of the past. The controversial 12VHPWR connection standard has fueled many online debates—prompting investigations from several prominent press outlets. Following NVIDIA's latest "safety" declaration—likely by coincidence—PCM Hong Kong reported another melting incident, affecting two cables and a power supply unit. The publication's hardware reviewer was recently engaged in the "full-load" testing of GeForce RTX 5090D and RTX 5080 graphics cards. Last week's evaluation session was interrupted by notable test system instabilities—upon downing tools, the PCM staffer discovered that their 1200 W PSU had given up the ghost. Additionally, two 16-pin cables had melted at both ends—initial detective work pointed to a GeForce RTX 4090 sample card being the main culprit.

VideoCardz and UNIKO's Hardware kept close tabs on PCM's next steps—online interactions, over the past weekend, spurred a re-evaluation of circumstances. According to PCM's latest update, they noticed burn marks on the GeForce RTX 4090 test unit—the two GeForce RTX-50-series cards did not exhibit any physical damage. Post-analysis, the reviewer now suspects that an SSD failure could be the root cause. They were happy to report that all involved RTX cards have survived, and that their test platform has been re-equipped with 12V-2x6 cables. An amended VideoCardz article proposes that everything came down to a simple human error.

AMD Details DeepSeek R1 Performance on Radeon RX 7900 XTX, Confirms Ryzen AI Max Memory Sizes

AMD today put out detailed guides on how to get DeepSeek R1 distilled reasoning models to run on Radeon RX graphics cards and Ryzen AI processors. The guide confirms that the new Ryzen AI Max "Strix Halo" processors come in hardwired to LPCAMM2 memory configurations of 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB, and there won't be a 16 GB memory option for notebook manufacturers to cheap out with. The guide goes on to explain that "Strix Halo" will be able to locally accelerate DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama with 70 billion parameters on the 64 GB and 128 GB memory configurations of "Strix Halo" powered notebooks, while the 32 GB model should be able to run DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B. Ryzen AI "Strix Point" mobile processors should be capable of running DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-14B and DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-14B on their RDNA 3.5 iGPUs and NPUs. Meanwhile, older generation processors based on "Phoenix Point" and "Hawk Point" chips should be capable of DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-14B. The company recommends running all of the above distills in Q4 K M quantization.

Switching gears to the discrete graphics cards, and AMD is only recommending its Radeon RX 7000 series for now, since the RDNA 3 graphics architecture introduces AI accelerators. The flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX is recommended for DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B distill, while all SKUs with 12 GB to 20 GB of memory—that's RX 7600 XT, RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 GRE, and RX 7900 XT, are recommended till DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-14B. The mainstream RX 7600 with its 8 GB memory is only recommended till DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-8B. You will need LM Studio 0.3.8 or later and Radeon Software Adrenalin 25.1.1 beta or later drivers. AMD put out first party LMStudio 0.3.8 tokens/second performance numbers for the RX 7900 XTX, comparing it with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER and the RTX 4090.

This contract company reportedly displayed various NVIDIA-related component parts in Las Vegas last week. RTX 40-era Founders Edition font was evident on the TITAN's frame—a VideoCardz news piece highlights the component's silver/magnesium color scheme. This presents further proof of inclusion within that Founders Edition generation.

The recovered prototype shares core specifications with the retail RTX 4090 Founders Edition, featuring identical PG147 SKU 330 board architecture and power specifications of 450 W typical draw with a 600 W peak capacity. However, technicalities reveal some differences, particularly in its BIOS version (95.02.01.22.01) and operating frequencies, with a 2115 MHz base clock and 2355 MHz boost clock running approximately 5% lower than the regular Founders Editions model.

Most intriguingly, the prototype implements an interesting triple-fan cooling solution, distinguished by a concealed middle fan integrated within the heatsink structure. This design element aligns with previous industry speculation about NVIDIA's development of an 900 W-capable Founders Edition card. However, the discovered unit maintains standard RTX 4090 branding without any "Ti" or "TITAN" designations, which we previously associated the massive heatsink with. Further analysis suggests the prototype's distinctive three-section PCB layout was likely developed to accommodate additional processing cores and memory components, pointing to NVIDIA's exploration of more powerful variants that ultimately never reached production.

MSI Integrates AIO Liquid Cooler on Its New SUPRIM FUZION and EXPERT FUZION Graphics Cards at Computex 2024

MSI unveiled some rather interesting new graphics card series at the Computex 2024 show, and while hybrid liquid and air cooled graphics cards are not really new, we rarely see the whole AIO liquid cooler integrated on the graphics card itself, which is what MSI is doing now with the SUPRIM FUZION and EXPERT FUZION graphics cards. While MSI was quite keen to announce these as "the world's first graphics card with an all-in-one cooler design", ASUS did the same thing before with its ROG MATRIX RTX 2080 TI back in 2019, and now MSI is pushing a similar design with GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 SUPER graphics cards.

Nevertheless, the new MSI SUPRIM FUZION RTX 4090, which already won the Computex 2024 Best Choice award and was already leaked a few days ago, is based on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and comes with "patented liquid system enclosed within the graphics card". The MSI SUPRIM FUZION RTX 4090 will feature a triple-slot design with two fans, most likely one to cool down the AIO radiator, and the other to keep other components well cooled.

Earlier this week, MSI inadvertently unveiled its upcoming GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM FUZION graphics card as part of a Computex Best Choice Award winner announcement. Allround-PC, a publication with early access to the card went hands-on with it. It turns out, that the card derives its name FUZION from its fully-integrated AIO liquid cooling solution. This is vastly different from the RTX 4090 SUPRIM Liquid X (which we reviewed). The SUPRIM Liquid X uses a 2-slot design for the card, and a factory-fitted AIO that lugs a 240 mm x 120 mm radiator. The SUPRIM FUZION, on the other hand, has a fully integrated liquid cooling solution, with no coolant tubes sticking out!

What this means, is that the AIO pump+block and radiator with its active ventilation are fully contained under the cooler shroud, with internal coolant tubing. There's no external radiator, and no tubes to wrestle with during installation. It's just that the card is very thick, with the source reporting a 4.5-slot thickness. This kind of thickness isn't new, as the ASUS Noctua Edition cards tend to be as many as 5 slots thick. The pictures also seem to show a set of copper heatsinks for the memory chips. We'll be sure to go hands on with this card ourselves at Computex, and hopefully even review it for you in the near future!

China Circumvents US Restrictions, Still Acquiring NVIDIA GPUs

A recent Reuters investigation has uncovered evidence suggesting Chinese universities and research institutes may have circumvented US sanctions on high-performance NVIDIA GPUs by purchasing servers containing the restricted chips. The sanctions tightened on November 17, 2023, prohibit the export of advanced NVIDIA GPUs like the consumer GeForce RTX 4090 to China. Despite these restrictions, Reuters found that at least ten China-based organizations acquired servers equipped with the sanctioned NVIDIA GPUs between November 20, 2023, and February 28, 2024. These servers were purchased from major vendors such as Dell, Gigabyte, and Supermicro, raising concerns about potential sanctions evasion. When contacted by Reuters, the companies provided varying responses.

Dell stated that it had not observed any instances of servers with restricted chips being shipped to China and expressed willingness to terminate relationships with resellers found to be violating export control regulations. Gigabyte, on the other hand, stated that it adheres to Taiwanese laws and international regulations. Notably, the sale and purchase of the sanctioned GPUs are not illegal in China. This raises the possibility that the restricted NVIDIA chips may have already been present in the country before the sanctions took effect on November 17, 2023. The findings highlight the challenges in enforcing export controls on advanced technologies, particularly in the realm of high-performance computing hardware. As tensions between the US and China continue to rise, the potential for further tightening of export restrictions on cutting-edge technologies remains a possibility.

Outpost: Infinity Siege developers recommend underclocking Intel's current and previous flagship desktop processors, the Core i9-14900K and i9-13900K, to prevent the game from crashing. This recommendation goes out to those with a GeForce RTX 4090 paired with either a Core i9-13900K or i9-14900K, we're fairly sure that the recommendation even extends to those with i9-14900KS and i9-13900KS. Team Ranger, the developers of the game, just released their second patch in just a week following the game's launch. In the patch notes, they ask users to use Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU), to lower the P-core clock speeds down to at least 5.00 GHz (maximum boost). This development closely follows a February 2024 report which says that game stability issues of high-end "Raptor Lake" processors are linked to power limit unlocks.

XMG Announces the Fusion 15 and Core 15 Gaming Laptops

With the XMG FUSION 15 and CORE 15, XMG unveils its first 15.3-inch laptops in 16:10 format. The two compact devices, which are very similar except for a few details, differ primarily regarding their CPUs: the FUSION 15 is powered by Intel's Core i9-14900HX or i7-14650HX and either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 or 4070, while the CORE 15 combines an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS with an RTX 4060.
