EVGA Caught Sending Golden Samples of the SuperNova B3 to JonnyGuru

An Overclock.net member, "shilka", posted late last month over the failure of power protection in EVGA's SuperNova B3 power supplies, specifically the 450 and 850 W models. This adds to the concerns first raised by Tom's Hardware, one of whose review units created fireworks. Normally, for a product that has been on the market for some time, as the B3 series has, one could chalk up such incidents to a faulty batch. But it appears that might not be the case, considering JonnyGuru also reviewed EVGA's B3 and did not encounter any fire hazards.

It has subsequently emerged that the sample provided by EVGA to JonnyGuru was manufactured by Super Flower, whose Leadex platform is well known for its performance and high quality. Aris of Tom's Hardware (and TechPowerUp), however, bought their review sample from a retail outlet. The manufacturing of the latter had been outsourced to RSY, with (in this case) a resulting decline in build quality. It remains unclear whether Super Flower outsourced its production, or if EVGA is using multiple suppliers or switched manufacturers all together. Regardless, lesser quality PSUs would appear to be in stores in comparison to what was reviewed at JonnyGuru, arguably the most influential review site for PSUs.

PowerColor Teases RX 500 Series Red Devil's Upgraded VRM Circuitry

Marketing rebranded cards is a much greater effort than selling the achievements and improvements of a fully new product launch. And word on the street is AIB partners that have to deal with rebrands don't really enjoy doing so. Having to sell the old as new is a tough sell, especially so when virtually no extra features seem to have been implemented. AMD itself is marketing their new RX 500 series as worthy improvements to its R9 390 graphics cards, for what it's worth. And as such, AIB's have to come up with original, out-of-the-box ways of peddling what is pretty much their old stuff as if it was new.

Recently, we've seen MSI showcasing a "3rd Gen FinFet 14" production process for its RX 570 Gaming X; now, PowerColor is looking to increase the attractiveness factor on its RX 580 Red Devil and Red Devil Golden Sample graphics cards (of which we've seen a teaser here and there) by showcasing an improved, reinforced VRM design for its upcoming graphics cards, with a "Platinum Power Kit", which includes Dr.Mos and a top-of-the-line Digital Power delivery system. Its VRM, however, keeps the 6-phase design that was already present on the RX 480. Here's hoping that the additions to PwerColor's card, alongside the Red Devil's purported 8+6-pin power delivery, will allow for higher overclocks, perhaps making this card a prime candidate for more efficient, exotic cooling solutions.

Remember that PowerColor Red Devil teaser from a few days back? While the source link is no longer available, it would seem that someone has gotten their hands on a (golden) sample, one of the two different SKUs that PowerColor is expected to launch around the RX 580. This Golden Sample edition sports a beefier, higher-performing 2.5-slot cooling solution, compared to the expected RX 580 Red Devil's 2.0-slot one. This sample, however, sports something unusual for a card with the power envelope expected from the RX 580: two auxiliary power cables, one 6-pin, as is par of the course with previous-generation RX 480 cards of which the RX 580 is a rebrand; and another, 8-pin one.

Gainward Announces its GeForce GTX 750 Series

Gainward Announces its GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 650 Product Lines

Gainward kicked off its GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 650 lineups with pairs of GTX 660 and GTX 650 graphics cards. The GTX 660 lineup includes a base model, which sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of 980/1033/6008 MHz, while the factory-overclocked Golden Sample variant is clocked at 1006/1072/6108 MHz. The base model is priced at US $229, while the Golden Sample variant charges a $30 premium. The GTX 650 lineup, on the other hand, includes a base model clocked at 1058/5000 MHz (core/memory), and a Golden Sample variant clocked at 1071/5200 MHz.

Gainward Designs Overclocked GTX 460 Graphics Card with Double Memory

Gainward is working on an upper-mid range graphics card based on the newly released NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 graphics processor, with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface, and some factory-overclocked speeds. It is branded under Gainward's GOOD Golden Sample marker. That card uses Gainward's own design PCB and cooling solution. The red PCB is of the same length as the reference PCB, but holds four display connectors (any two can be used simultaneously), that include two DVI, one D-Sub, and HDMI. Based on the 40 nm GF104 GPU, Gainward's card has clock speeds of 700 MHz core (vs. 675 MHz reference), 1400 MHz CUDA core, and 900 MHz (3600 MHz effective) memory. It is likely to cost over 210 EUR.

Gainward Intros GeForce GTX 470 Golden Sample

Gainward released a new custom-design GeForce GTX 470 graphics card, which is based on the Gainward GTX 470 GOOD Edition that was launched a month ago, replicated as Palit GTX 470 Dual-Fan. The factory-overclocked model is designated with the Golden Sample (GS) identifier. It packs clock speeds of 650/1301/850(3400) MHz (core/shader/memory), against reference speeds of 607/1215/837(3348) MHz.

As with the GOOD Edition design, it features a slightly longer PCB at 10.5 inches, custom dual-fan GPU cooler, and display outputs which include two DVI-D, and one each of HDMI and DisplayPort (though only two displays can be connected at a time). The DirectX 11 compliant GeForce GTX 470 packs 448 CUDA cores, and 1280 MB of GDDR5 memory across a 320-bit wide memory interface. It is expected to be priced at a slight premium of the GOOD Edition.

Gainward Readies Radeon HD 4850 GS GLH Card with 512 MB of GDDR5 Memory

NVIDIA partner Gainward is preparing to launch a custom Radeon HD 4850 that, instead of the usual GDDR3 memory, utilizes GDDR5 memory. Gainward calls the card Radeon HD 4850 Golden Sample Goes Like Hell, pretty long name for a card, but you can always use the Radeon HD 4850 GS GLH abbreviature. The card's specifications include 512 MB of GDDR5 memory with 256-bit memory interface, a dual-slot cooler, and D-Sub, DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI connectors. Clock speeds for this particular model are 700 MHz for the GPU and 3600 MHz for the memory. Gainward's HD 4850 512MB GS GLH is expected to hit the stores in a few weeks time.

Gainward Out with Radeon HD 4870 X2 Golden Sample

Gainward, a subsidiary of Palit, has announced the Radeon HD 4870 X2 Golden Sample. The graphics card is identical to the Revolution R700 Deluxe by the parent company Palit, while going with Gainward branding to cater to the company's target markets. Gainward focuses on the Asian markets, where it has most of its influence on. The other subsidiary of Palit, XpertVision, is reportedly being dissolved into the parent brand, as brand Palit has started to have market presence in XpertVision's target market.

The card spans across three expansion slots for its massive cooler. It features two RV770 graphics processors by ATI aided with 2 GB of total memory based on the GDDR5 memory standard. It features a dual-link DVI, a D-SUB, a DisplayPort and a HDMI port. The availability and pricing of this card, is intended to be synchronized with those of the Palit card, they might reach markets at the same time, just that they release in different parts of the world.
