Mushkin Launches Carbon KB-001 Mechanical Keyboard

Looking to extend its reach from its other product lines, Mushkin has now extended its product tendrils towards the mechanical keyboard spectrum, with the launch of the Carbon KB-001. Mushkin is apparently positioning the Carbon KB-001 as a high-end offering, boasting the usage of CNC'd and aircraft-grade anodized brushed aluminum, with the PCB being touted as a double fiberglass design. The aircraft-grade components are otherwise reflected on the coloring and overall accents of the keyboard, with the lateral red exhaust grills being (we suspect) reminiscent of those found in fighter jets.

The Carbon KB-001 offers RGB lighting and standard Kailh Brown switches, with other switch options' availability remaining unclear. Mushkin also mentioned a full-size 104-key keyboard with n-key rollover, a Windows key lock, anti-ghosting technologies, and a braided fiber cable, with pricing being reported at around the $70 mark.

Corsair Reveals K95 RGB Platinum Keyboard

Even though Corsair has already launched a K95 RGB Keyboard, the company apparently wasn't convinced that that was the best of what they could achieve; as such, Corsair has announced what they deem to be "the true successor to the K70: the K95 RGB Platinum.

This version features 8 MB of on-board memory to let owners save up to three profiles for lighting and macros, so that they are carried with your keyboard and you don't have to fiddle with the settings yet again if you change computers. There are now only 6 macro keys located on the left side of the keyboard, a step-down from the 18 offered in the previous K95 - but evey main key is now re-assignable, which means that you can do the same amount of work, without having those extra 12 keys taking up space and increasing the keyboard length . In terms of the ever-present lighting features, the K95 RGB Platinum features a lighting zone called LightEdge, which is located along the top edge of the keyboard. It's essentially a long strip of light created by 16 RGB LEDs, and you can program its lighting patterns and colors separately from the rest of the keyboard.

New Cherry MX Black Silent Switches Announced; No Longer Exclusive to Corsair

Cherry GmbH, the German-American computer peripheral-device maker best known for its mechanical keyboard switches, has announced a new addition to their Silent line of switches. The new Silent Black switches join the company's Silent line-up of Silent Red, Silent RGB Red, and Silent RGB Black. Cherry MX Silent switches are not particularly new, but until now, they were limited to linear Red switches, and were used exclusively on Corsair products (such as the STRAFE RGB Keyboard). Now, though, Corsair's exclusivity has come to an end, leaving other companies free to implement the Silent switches onto their own keyboards.

The "silent" operation is achieved via a rubber pad which dampens the sound of both the switch bottoming out and the rebound noise. Otherwise, the switches' specifications are identical to those of their non-silent counterparts. It's also worth noting that both Red and Black switches are linear, meaning there's no extra click within the key travel. The Silent Black switches are specified for 60 cN +/- 20 cN actuation force (against the 40 cN of their Silent Red counterparts), 2mm +/-0.6 pretravel, 4mm /-0.4 actuator travel, <5 ms bounce time, and are rated at 50 million key presses.
