LG Display Succeeds in Developing World's First Stretchable Display that Expands by 50 Percent

LG Display, the world's leading innovator of display technologies, announced today its unveiling of the world's first Stretchable display capable of expanding up to 50%, the highest rate of elongation in the industry. At LG Science Park in Seoul on Nov. 8, the company demonstrated the panel at a meeting of more than 100 South Korean industry, academia, and research stakeholders involved in a Stretchable display national project.

Stretchable displays are seen as the ultimate free-form screen technology because they can be freely transformed into any shape, including by stretching, folding, and twisting.

LG Display Starts Mass Production of Industry's First Tandem OLED for Laptops

LG Display, the world's leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it has started mass production of the industry's first 13-inch Tandem OLED panel for laptops. The company is targeting the OLED market with the higher performance and lower power consumption of Tandem OLED technology. First commercialized by LG Display in 2019, Tandem OLED's advantages are achieved by combining two stacks of red, green, and blue (RGB) organic light emitting layers. Working together in tandem, these layers offer superior durability and performance compared to single-layer OLED panels, including a longer life span and higher brightness.

Tandem OLEDs were first applied to automotive OLEDs, which have particularly high quality standards, to disperse energy and allow them to operate more reliably for longer periods of time. They are also considered optimal for IT products that require a relatively high amount of screen time, such as laptops, monitors, and tablets. Now applied to laptops for the first time, LG Display's new Tandem OLED panel has been tailored for laptop use. It can deliver double the lifespan and triple the brightness of a conventional single-layer OLED display, while reducing power consumption by up to 40%, making it ideal for high-performance IT devices like AI laptops as well as regular laptops.

LG Display Showing New 4K OLEDoS Display for VR at SID Display Week

LG Display, the world's leading innovator of display technologies, announced today the unveiling of a large number of its next-generation OLED and cutting-edge display technologies at SID Display Week 2024 in San Jose, California from May 14-16. Insiders Predict Slimmer Profiles on 2024 iPad Pro OLED Models

Mid-January reportage indicated that LG and Samsung plants in South Korea had commenced construction of next-gen Apple iPad OLED parts—while expert analysis has predicted a second quarter launch of 11 and 13-inch "Pro" tablet models. Omdia—an independent analyst and consultancy firm—has compiled its Apple field research into a forecasted roadmap of various portable products. Company analysts believe that: "LG Display (LGD) and Samsung Display (SDC) are preparing to mass-produce RGB tandem stack and Hybrid OLEDs from their half-Gen 6 fabs. Apple also plans to launch the MacBook Pro with OLED displays in 2026. BOE, LGD, and SDC are preparing their fab investments to produce RGB tandem stack and hybrid OLEDs at half-Gen 8.7 fabs."

9to5Mac's insider network detected whispers of possible Apple tablet physical profile adjustments—suggesting that a larger next-gen iPad Air is in the pipeline, alongside a thinner iPad Pro design update: "(we) first reported last year that Apple has been working on two new versions of the iPad Air, codenamed J507 and J537. While one of these models will look pretty much like the current iPad Air, the other will have a larger display. If true, this will be the first time Apple will offer the iPad Air in two different sizes. And according to our sources, this larger iPad Air will have essentially the same dimensions as the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, suggesting that the screen size will also be almost identical. The smaller iPad Air is unlikely to have any significant design changes."

The LG UltraGear 27GS95QE OLED Gaming Monitor Now Available for C$1200

Announced just before the Christmas holiday, LG's UltraGear 27GS95QE is now starting to become available for purchase. The differences between it and its predecessor, the 27GR95QE are very minor and the only obvious specification change is a bump in SDR brightness from 200 nits to 275 nits typical brightness. That said, the older 27GR95QE didn't quite manage to meet the 200 nits figure in reviews. Likewise the claimed 1000 nits HDR brightness wasn't achieved by the older model either and although LG is sticking to the same peak HDR brightness, it's possible that this has been improved as well, as the older model didn't go much beyond 600 nits in reviews.

The UltraGear 27GS95QE retains the matte AG coating, so those hoping for a glossy display are out of luck as well. TFT Central believes that the 27GS95QE is using a new WOLED panel from LG Display that is technically capable of reaching 1300 nits, but this is currently just speculation. Converting C$1200 to US$, suggests that the MSRP is likely to be US$899 plus taxes, which means the new models will be around U$100 cheaper than the old model in terms of MSRP. For anyone that isn't overly concerned about the brightness, the older 27GR95QE has been discounted by LG in the US and is now going for US$750, which is a US$250 discount on the US$999 MSRP. The lower MSRP of the new models appears to suggest that OLED pricing are slowly coming down in price, but it appears we're going to have to wait another couple of years before they reach more mainstream pricing.

Apple iPad Pro OLED Parts Reportedly Set for Production at LG & Samsung

Insider information emerging from an LG Display manufacturing plant points to OLED screen production ramping up in the coming months for fitting on next generation Apple iPad Pro models. According to Korea's The Elec, LG as well as rival Samsung's Display division are about to begin production on thin film transistor (TFT) layering for prosumer iOS-driven tablets. LG is allegedly contracted to manufacture upcoming 13-inch iPad Pro display tech, while Samsung is tasked with producing an 11-inch parts. The Korean report proposes that Apple is hoping to get its 13-inch and 11-inch OLED iPad Pro models into a mass production phase by March. Industry insiders think that M3 (ARM-based) chipsets are a natural choice to power these devices.

An Apple analyst—Ming-Chi Kuo—reckons that OLED-equipped iPad Pro models are scheduled for a second quarter 2024 launch, which lands anywhere between April to June. The multinational technology company had a sluggish 2023, in terms of hardware sales, and is likely keen to generate interest with its next-gen iPad Pro range—the addition of OLED technology (a first for Apple tablets) seems to be a key strategy. Mac Rumors believes that: "Apple's OLED iPad Pro shipments forecast for the year have reportedly decreased to 8 million units, down from the 10 million units that were projected for 2024 last year. The reduction is said to be a reflection of broadly sluggish performance across Apple's product lineup. Apple did not release any new iPad models last year, so it will be interesting to see if pent-up demand can offset poor sales."

Such dynamics are predicted to catapult OLED monitor shipments past the coveted one million unit threshold.

In terms of market share, Samsung is on track for a spirited push in OLED monitor shipments in 2H23, potentially capturing a market share of 27%—echoing LGE's performance. Not to be left behind, Dell is ardently pushing its 34-inch offering, hoping to clinch a market presence above 20%. Veeo Joins LG Display in Partnership to Create the First Behind-Display Camera for Next Generation Video Conferencing

OLED TV Prices Predicted to Fall in 2023 and 2024

According to a newly published study, by market analysts at Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), TV OLED panel production costs are set to fall consistently over the next two years. Thanks to increased efficiency and improved yields at key manufacturing facilities, premium TV models could drop in price within a few months (maybe in time for Christmas) - according to FlatPanelsHD. The DSCC report indicates that production costs per 55-inch OLED panel are predicted to decrease by roughly 20% (when compared to data from 2022), with the same percentage reduction lined up for 2024. LG Display's "white OLED" panel is the given example here - it is featured on many 2023 TV ranges including LG's own C3 and G3 models, as well as units from competing brands: Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Hisense, etc.

Samsung's proprietary QD-OLED TV technology is also forecasted to become cheaper to produce - by 30% - according to the market analysts at DSCC. The Display division's South Korean factory lines are capable of pumping out 65-inch QD-OLED panels at greater efficiency this year - with a reported higher overall yield when compared to 2022's results (from 68% to 84%). Samsung's quantum dot panels are usually reserved for flagship level TV models, but lower production costs could lead to more mid-range televisions adopting the high-end display technology.

The UltraSharp's competitive pricing undercuts the nearest competition by $1000 - Apple's Pro Display XDR is marginally better in terms of specifications, but potential buyers will get landed with a $5000 bill for the privilege of owning it. Dell is hoping that a bunch of handy features on its offering - including an in-built KVM, 4K HDR webcam, plenty of type USB-C & A ports, a Thunderbolt 4 port and dual 14 W speakers - will be enough to steal some professional clients from Team Cupertino.

LG Stumps Up $2.5 Billion For Greater OLED Production Output

LG is reported to be making substantial investments into improving and upgrading its OLED manufacturing facilities in South Korea - last month we found out about a similar effort underway at Samsung (courtesy of Reuters). Nikkei Asia has today published an article that explores this situation plus a wider context - their findings reaffirm existing claims that Samsung Display has spent $3+ billion on the sprucing up of its Tangjeong factory. LG's modernization bill is smaller at a mere $2.5 billion - this will be spent on creating additional production lines at the company's mainline Paju plant. LG is aiming to increase factory output of medium-sized OLED panels using sixth generation technology.

According to last month's report, industry insiders have suggested that Samsung was ramping up its high end OLED production lines in order to secure substantial component orders from a key client, Apple, with premium display panels destined for fitting on next generation iPad and MacBook products. Reuters posited that LG was not able to fulfil any new requests from Apple at the time - due to its display factories being fully booked and operating at maximum capacity. It seems that LG is now addressing this problem by making necessary and essential upgrades at its Paju P10 OLED facility. A domestic rivalry is only part of the problem, both giant South Korean electronics firms are also keeping a collective eye on other rival manufacturers (operating out of nearby nations).

LG's Gram Style Notebooks to Feature Samsung OLED Display

At CES, LG announced its new Gram Style notebooks with OLED displays and news out of Korea now suggests that the 14 and 16-inch notebooks will sport OLED displays from LG's main competitor, Samsung. This might not be entirely surprising, as there's a limited number of laptop sized OLED panel manufacturers and it seems like LG would rather go with a local, Korean option, rather than using a Japanese or Chinese panel in its upcoming notebooks.

The report by the Elec suggests that the LG Gram Style notebooks will use Samsung's rigid OLED panels based on a standard glass substrate. This is also the type of panel that most other notebook manufacturers are using today, as it's the most cost effective type of OLED panels, regardless of manufacturer. LG Display doesn't currently manufacture this type of OLED panels, even though it apparently could do so, using its flexible OLED production lines, albeit at a higher cost. The irony in the situation is still hard to miss though, as the two companies are fierce competitors in many of their core businesses.
